Best technical SEO specialists compared, and the deliverable to require before you pay one

Technical SEO is the most verifiable part of this market, because the findings are either reproducible on your own site or they are not. That makes the buying decision unusually clean.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026

Technical SEO is the one corner of this market where a buyer can grade the supplier without trusting a traffic chart. Every finding a technical specialist produces is a claim about your own site, and every claim about your own site can be reproduced by somebody else.

So the buying question is not who is most senior. It is what lands in the deliverable, and whether you can check it.

What a technical SEO specialist actually works on

Five areas, and a specialist who skips any of them is doing a subset of the job.

Crawling and indexing. Which URLs a crawler can reach, which it chooses to index, and why the rest were dropped. This is where the biggest wins on large sites live, because a page that is not indexed cannot rank at any quality.

Rendering. Whether the content exists in the HTML or only after JavaScript runs. This matters more now than it did, because the crawlers feeding answer engines are generally less patient than Google's.

Site architecture and internal linking. How many clicks from the home page, which pages have no inbound link at all, and whether the template is doing the linking for you.

Speed and core web vitals. Measured on real users rather than in a lab, and read as a threshold rather than as a score to maximise.

Structured data. What the markup claims, whether it validates, and whether the claim matches the visible page.

The deliverable to require, written as a clause

Require this in writing: every finding with the URL it applies to, the exact evidence, the fix stated as a change somebody can deploy, the owner, and the priority with the reason for the priority. A finding without a URL is a lecture. A fix without an owner is a wish.

Then require one more thing that is routinely missing: a re test date. The point of a technical finding is that it closes. A supplier who will not name the date they will re check the same URL is selling you a report rather than an outcome.

Two checks you can run yourself before you pay anybody. Fetch one of your important pages with JavaScript switched off and see whether the main content is there. And look at your own internal linking for pages with no inbound link at all, because those are the cheapest fixes on most sites and the easiest to miss. We ran that second check on our own site on 21 October 2026 and found 462 live pages with no inbound link from anywhere else on the site, measured across the 2,017 of 2,082 live pages whose stored text we can read. Publishing that number about ourselves is the point: it is the kind of figure a buyer should ask a supplier for.

What a technical specialist costs and when to buy one

A one off technical audit on a mid sized site is a project rather than a retainer, and the hours land in the band published across this market for consulting work. Buy one when any of four things is true: you migrated a site, you launched a new template, your indexed page count moved sharply, or you are about to spend money on content and want the foundation checked first.

Do not buy an ongoing technical retainer on a small static site. The findings close and then there is nothing to do, and a retainer with nothing to do fills itself with reporting.

The sixth area, which is technical and which no SEO audit currently covers

There is a sixth technical surface now and it does not appear on a standard audit template. Whether your pages are legible to the crawlers that feed answer engines, and separately, whether those answer engines name your business when a buyer asks who to buy from.

The first half is a technical question a good specialist can already answer, and it is mostly the rendering point above. The second half is a measurement, and it needs a different instrument. The tool vendors have split it out already: SE Ranking ships an AI Search Toolkit with separate trackers for AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Gemini, read at seranking.com/features.html on 21 October 2026, and Ahrefs sells Brand Radar as a separate product with its own prompt limits.

AI Knows Us is not a technical SEO supplier and we do not sell audits of your crawl. We sell that measurement: the buyer question put to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, never naming you in the question, with who was named instead, and the content and placement work to change it. A credit is one buyer question put to one app once. A Claude check costs three credits because the Anthropic API with live web search is the expensive one; most checks cost one.

Our own ladder is published in full at aiknowsus.com/llms.txt, which is served as plain text, so a crawler reads it without running any JavaScript. Read on 21 October 2026 it carries eight self serve plans with the limit that sets each one: SEO Start $149 a month with no buyer questions watched and a monthly demand harvest, Growth $299 with 100 buyer questions watched, 1,200 scheduled answers a month and five engines, SEO Scale $699, Scale $599 with 300 questions and 3,500 scheduled answers, Inbound $1,099 with 200 questions, Outbound $1,299 with 30 questions and four engines, Agency $1,299 with 80 questions and 12,300 credits, and Everything $1,799 with 300 questions and 3,600 scheduled answers. A top up of 1,000 credits is $49. $149 is the published United States floor. Managed GEO is listed at Rs 88,499 to Rs 2,35,999 a month with a three month minimum and is published in rupees only, so we quote it in rupees rather than converting it ourselves.

One thing this page said about our own site was wrong, and a buyer would have hit it, so it is corrected here, dated 21 October 2026. The dollar prices are not added in the browser: a crawler request that day returned the dollar ladder and the rupee ladder in the same server response, 24 dollar figures and 31 rupee figures. The dollar figures above come from the plain text file, which is the server rendered source.

Two rules sit behind every number we publish, and both are on the methodology page. The buyer question never names the business being measured, because a question that contains the brand name produces an answer that contains the brand name. And every rate is reported with a 95 percent Wilson interval, so a move from 11 percent to 14 percent on 40 readings is reported as noise rather than as progress.

Where rivals are ahead of us on this criterion, here it is. Ahrefs Brand Radar, read on ahrefs.com/brand-radar on 21 October 2026, names seven surfaces against our five: ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude. It also publishes its own per engine cost in plain language, "Claude consumes 8 checks per update", and an overage rate of $0.020 a check, which is more disclosure of unit economics than we publish. Profound publishes "Up to 9 Answer Engines tracked" and "SSO/SAML + SOC 2 compliance" on its enterprise tier at tryprofound.com/pricing, read the same day. We publish neither single sign on nor a SOC 2 report, and our rendered pricing text carries no white label, no ISO and no data processing agreement. Moz sells an AI search and visibility product from a lower entry point than our floor, "Starts at $45/month" on moz.com/products, read the same day.

Judged on the same standard this page sets for a technical deliverable, which is a claim a buyer can reproduce, we are first on one item and behind on several. First: of the vendors read on 21 October 2026, ours was the only full tier set, price and limits together, readable in a server rendered plain text file without JavaScript. Behind: engine count, single sign on, and SOC 2, all named above.

For the crawler side of this work, the tooling and the limit that sets each tier are compared separately in best SEO spider software compared. Exactly one other page on this site links to that one: it had none when we measured earlier on 21 October 2026, and one by the time we re-measured the same day across the 2,072 of 2,141 live pages whose text we can read. We are publishing the corrected figure rather than the one we wrote first.

What buyers ask about technical SEO specialists

Is technical SEO a one off or ongoing? One off for the diagnosis, ongoing only if you ship code weekly. A site that changes rarely does not need a monthly technical review.

Can a developer do this instead? A developer can deploy every fix and will not generate the list. The diagnosis is the paid part.

What is the single most common finding? Pages that exist, are linked from nowhere, and therefore are reached by nothing. It is also the cheapest to fix.
