Best way to hire an SEO agency compared, and the free checks two rivals publish that we do not
Five phrasings ask one question. The strongest move before you hire anybody is to run a measurement yourself, and on that criterion two competitors beat us because they publish a free one and we publish none.

The honest first answer to whether you should hire an SEO agency is that you should run two measurements yourself first, and the cheaper of the two is free. Buyers who skip this step hire on a pitch rather than on a diagnosis, and a pitch is written before anybody has looked at your site.
The three situations where hiring an agency is the wrong move
Your site has six pages and no content plan. There is nothing to optimise yet. The money belongs in pages that answer real questions, which is a writing problem before it is a search problem.
Nobody internally can approve anything in under two weeks. SEO is a sequence of small changes to a live website. An agency blocked on approvals bills for waiting, and the relationship sours over something that was never about search.
You need results this quarter. The work accumulates. If the business needs revenue in eight weeks, paid acquisition is the honest answer and a good agency will tell you so, which is itself a useful test of the agency.
If none of those three applies, hiring is reasonable, and the next question is what you are hiring for.
What to hire, in increasing order of commitment
A diagnosis. One audit, delivered once, with a prioritised list. The cheapest possible entry into this market and the right first purchase for almost everybody who has never bought SEO. It also tests the supplier on real work rather than on a deck.
A project. Technical remediation with a scope and a finish line. Suits a company with an internal content capability and a broken site.
A retainer. Ongoing content, technical and authority work. The default offer in this market, and the one worth resisting until the first two have been done, because a retainer absorbs an audit and then never finishes it.
A consultant on a day rate. Senior diagnosis and oversight without execution. Pairs well with an internal team and badly with no team at all.
Shortlist across tiers rather than within one: a boutique, a mid market independent and a consultant will give you three genuinely different reads on the same problem, and the disagreement is the information.
For the internal half of the same decision, including which roles to hire in what order, this site carries SEO team, the roles and the order to hire them. Measured on 21 October 2026, no other page on this site links to that one, out of 2,405 live pages of which 982 have no inbound internal link by the same measure, 40.8 percent and an upper bound because a link can only be counted inside a body we hold.
The two measurements to run before you brief anybody
The first is your own Search Console. Free, already yours, and it answers the question an agency will charge to answer: which queries already bring you impressions, at what average position, and which pages get them. If the answer is that you have impressions at position fourteen for queries that matter, you have an improvement problem. If the answer is almost no impressions at all, you have a coverage problem, and those two briefs produce different shortlists.
The second is whether assistants name you when a buyer asks who to use. This is newer, no agency reports on it by default, and it is now part of the same purchase because a buyer asking ChatGPT for a recommendation never reaches a results page at all. Three vendors publish a way to check it without paying.
| Vendor | What it publishes for free, in its own words, 21 October 2026 |
|---|---|
| SE Ranking | "5 free checks per day", plus a 14 day trial with "No credit card required" and "Add up to five competitors". Tracks "Google AIOs, AI Mode, ChatGPT, and Gemini"; Claude appears only in its FAQ as an assistant people favour, not a tracked engine. |
| BrightLocal | A free one-off report. "Pick from Google AI Mode, or ChatGPT", "Check up to 5 prompts", one location per check, delivered as a PDF to an email address with no card. |
| Profound | A free Trial of "50 unique prompts", "Daily for 7 days", across 3 answer engines, seats "Unlimited", SSO "No". Its Enterprise tier is priced "Custom". |
| AI Knows Us | Nothing. We publish no free check and no trial at any tier. The published floor is SEO Start at $149, which watches 0 buyer questions on 0 engines. |
SE Ranking and BrightLocal both beat us on this page's own criterion, by name
The criterion on a page about hiring is what you can find out before you spend anything. On that criterion SE Ranking is first and BrightLocal second, and AI Knows Us does not place, because we publish no free check at all. If what you want today is one reading to decide whether this surface is worth attention, use theirs. We would rather send a buyer to a competitor's free tool than imply that our paywall is a feature.
Where AI Knows Us becomes the right purchase is after that free reading has told you something uncomfortable, because the free versions are snapshots and the problem is a trend. Read at aiknowsus.com/pricing on 23 October 2026, Growth is $299 a month for 100 buyer questions, 1,200 scheduled answers and all five apps, including Claude at 3 credits a check "because Claude costs us more to run" while most checks use one. BrightLocal's free report covers one platform per check and one location; SE Ranking's five a day covers four engines and not Claude. The thing we sell that neither publishes is the same five surfaces read repeatedly, with your name kept out of the question so the answer is not primed.
We are not an SEO agency and we are not an alternative to one. We sell no audits, no content and no links, so nothing on this page's shortlist is us.
Questions buyers ask before hiring an SEO agency
How long before an agency should show something? A diagnosis in two to three weeks and a measurable technical improvement inside the first quarter. Content and authority effects take longer and nobody can tell you how long, including us.
Should I believe a directory rating? Open the profile rather than trusting the badge, and know that all four major review platforms refused a browser request on 21 October 2026, so the corpus behind the badge cannot be audited at scale.
Is a specialist always better than a generalist? For a single discipline with a specific problem, usually yes and visibly so. For a broad brief, a specialist bills for coordination it is not built to do.
What single question separates good proposals from bad ones? Ask what each firm would do in the first thirty days and why, before it has your budget. The firm that names something true about your own site is reading rather than pitching.
