Best website builders and platforms for SEO compared, ranked on what each one lets you control

Every builder now claims to be SEO friendly, so that claim carries no information. Rank them instead on the specific controls each one hands you, because that is checkable on their own pages today.

Every website builder in the market calls itself SEO friendly, which makes the phrase useless for choosing between them. What separates them is which controls they hand you, and that is a list you can check on their own pages.

The eight controls that actually decide it

Here is the stated criterion for this page, applied to every platform including the one that happens to publish the most. Rank on how many of these eight controls the platform's own documentation says you get, without a developer and without leaving the platform.

One, per page title and meta description, editable individually rather than generated from a template. Two, URL structure you can set and change. Three, canonical tags you can override. Four, structured data markup you can add or replace. Five, an editable robots.txt. Six, bulk 301 redirects, which is the one that decides whether a migration is survivable. Seven, image handling, meaning compression, resizing and a modern format, done for you. Eight, control over indexing of generated pages such as tag and category archives, which is where platforms quietly create hundreds of thin pages.

That list is deliberately boring and it is the whole decision. A platform that gives you all eight cannot stop you ranking. A platform missing six and eight will hurt you later in ways that are expensive to unwind.

What Wix publishes, read today

We read wix.com/seo on 21 October 2026, and it is the most specific of the major builders about this list, so it is worth quoting rather than summarising.

On controls one to five it states you can "Customize your site's meta tags, URL structure, canonical tags, structured data markup, robots.txt file and more". On canonicals specifically, "By default, Wix adds the page URL to the canonical tag", and you can change it for any page. On robots, "All Wix sites automatically come with their own editable robots.txt file". On structured data, "Wix adds structured data markups to dynamic pages like products, events, blog posts, and more", with the defaults overridable.

On control six it publishes a number, which almost nobody does. You can "Maintain link equity by creating permanent 301 redirects for old URLs", with bulk import of up to 500 URLs at once. That figure is the useful one on the whole page. If you are migrating a two thousand page site, 500 per import tells you the shape of the job before you start.

On control seven, images are "instantly compressed, resized, and converted to WebP for accelerated page loading".

No price is rendered on that page. It links to a pricing page instead, and we are not going to reproduce a price table here.

A platform page that moved under us, which is the lesson

We tried to read the equivalent Squarespace page the same day. squarespace.com/seo returned HTTP 404.

We are publishing that rather than quoting an older version from memory, because it is the honest state of our reading and because it is the single most useful warning on this page. Platform documentation moves. A comparison article that lists what a builder could do two years ago is describing a product that may not exist in that shape now. Before you commit a site to any platform, open its current SEO documentation yourself and tick off the eight controls above. A 404 today says nothing about whether Squarespace is good at SEO. It says the page we wanted has moved, and that you should find the current one rather than trust a list. Our page on Hostinger SEO does exactly that for Hostinger AI Builder, whose links are nofollow until you change them.

The ninth control, which is new and which two builders now claim

Something has changed in this category in the last year and it is worth separating from the eight above, because it is a different kind of claim.

Wix's SEO page now describes an AI Visibility tool that, in its words, shows how your site is mentioned in LLMs, naming ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and tracks AI driven traffic. That is a real feature and it is included in a site platform rather than sold separately, which is a genuine advantage.

It is also worth counting. Three surfaces are named. The five that a United States buyer actually asks are ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, and two of those five are not in that list.

This is the category AI Knows Us is in and it is the only thing we sell. We are not a website builder and we do not belong on a shortlist with Wix, Squarespace or WordPress for building a site. On the narrow ninth control, here is the comparison on the same kind of checkable criterion as above, which is how many of the five surfaces each vendor publishes coverage of, with the allowance and the price next to it.

Our ladder at aiknowsus.com/llms.txt, read 21 October 2026, publishes Growth at $299 a month with 100 buyer questions watched, 1,600 credits and all five engines. On surface count across all five, with a published question allowance, we lead this comparison. Where Wix beats us, and it is not a small thing: its tool is bundled into a platform you were going to pay for anyway, and ours is a separate $299 a month line item. For a small site owner who wants a directional signal rather than a monitored programme, bundled and partial may be the better purchase, and we would rather say so.

Ahrefs also belongs in this comparison and beats us on one axis. Its Brand Radar page, read at ahrefs.com/brand-radar on 21 October 2026, states "See any brand's AI visibility instantly across 493 million prompts" and lists "(AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot)" with "All platforms (Claude available)". On prompt corpus size Ahrefs is larger than us and we are not going to claim otherwise. It also publishes its per engine consumption, including that "Claude consumes 8 checks per update" against "1 check per platform, location and update" elsewhere, which is the kind of disclosure worth demanding from every vendor here, us included.

And one caution about our own floor, since this page is about checkable claims. SEO Start at $149 publishes 0 buyer questions, 0 credits and 0 engines. Nobody should write "AI visibility from $149", including us.

What to read next

If your real decision is between two specific builders rather than across the category, the four questions that settle the most common pairing are at Squarespace or Wix, the four questions that decide it. We link to it deliberately. When we measured inbound links across 2,286 stored page bodies on 21 October 2026, no other page on this site links to that one, and 939 of our 2,200 live pages were in the same position, 42.7 percent, an upper bound.

If you have already chosen WordPress, the plugin question is the next one and it is answered at best WordPress SEO plugins and tools compared.
