Best website SEO software compared, split by whether it changes your site or only reports on it
Two completely different products are sold as website SEO software. One writes to your pages. The other reads them and hands you a list. Here is the line between them, and the published limit that decides each purchase.
Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026
This page answers the software question. If what you are really choosing is the platform your site is built on, that is a different purchase with a different checklist, and it is answered separately and linked at the end.
The criterion on this page, applied to everybody including us. Does the tool write to your site, or does it only read it? That single line decides who needs access to what, who is accountable when a change breaks something, and which of these products you can run without a developer. Vendors blur it because the word software covers both.
The two products hiding behind one phrase
| Writes to your site | Reads your site | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A plugin or an app inside your CMS. It edits titles, meta descriptions, canonicals, redirects and markup, and the change is live when you save it. | A crawler or a platform. It fetches your pages the way a search engine would and reports what it found. Nothing changes until a person changes it. |
| Who needs it | Anybody running a site on WordPress, Shopify, Wix or Squarespace who needs per-page control the platform does not give in its own editor. | Anybody with more pages than they can open by hand, which in practice is anybody past a few hundred URLs. |
| Who it is dangerous for | A site where nobody owns the staging process. A bad bulk edit is live immediately. | Nobody. It is read only. The risk is a long report that nobody acts on. |
| What to check before buying | Whether it can bulk edit, and whether it can roll back. | The published ceiling on how many URLs it will read. |
The reading half, ranked on the ceiling each vendor publishes
This is the half where the criterion is checkable, so this is where a ranking means something. A crawl ceiling is the vendor's own number and it does not move with the country you read it from.
| Tool | What its own page publishes, read 21 October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Screaming Frog SEO Spider | screamingfrog.co.uk/seo-spider says "The free version is restricted to crawling up to 500 URLs in a single crawl", with downloads for Windows, macOS on both Apple Silicon and Intel, and Linux. It also says the maximum you can crawl "is dependent on allocated memory and storage", which is an honest way of saying the ceiling is your own machine. |
| Sitebulb | sitebulb.com/pricing publishes "10,000 URLs per audit" on Lite and "500,000 URLs per audit" on Pro, and its FAQ says Pro can be raised to 2 million depending on the user's machine. JavaScript crawling is listed under "All plans get". Its Cloud tier publishes no URL number at all, only that it suits sites with "hundreds of thousands of URLs or more". |
| Lumar | lumar.io/platform calls itself "The Ultimate Website Optimization Platform" and describes crawling "built for enterprise-scale websites". It publishes no ceiling, no limit and no price. On the stated criterion it cannot be placed. |
| Oncrawl | oncrawl.com publishes "+300M URLs crawled (JS)" and "+500M log lines processed daily" as platform scale rather than as your allowance, and no price. Its log analyzer is the real differentiator: "Analyze real log data to understand how Googlebot, Bingbot, and AI bots interact with your site". |
| seoClarity | seoclarity.net/platform publishes "unlimited crawls" and "no limits on the number of crawled pages or crawl projects", plus "450X more Search Console data" and "100+ health audit checks". No price. |
So the ranking, on the stated criterion. Screaming Frog and Sitebulb rank first and second, not because they are better platforms but because they publish a number you can check against your own URL count before you pay. Lumar, Oncrawl and seoClarity are placed below them on this criterion and only on this criterion: all three are built for sites larger than the two desktop tools comfortably handle, and if your site is that size the demo call is the route whether you like it or not.
One thing every tool on this page reads for free, and most buyers pay for twice
Google Search Console reports what Google itself did with your pages, for any property you can verify, at no cost. Every crawler above is guessing at what Search Console tells you directly. Buy a crawler for what Search Console cannot do, which is read pages Google never reached, compare templates at scale and validate markup before it ships. Do not buy one to find out whether you are indexed.
The writing half, and the one question worth asking
Ask whether it can undo. A plugin that bulk-edits three hundred title tags is doing in one click what a developer would do in a ticket, and the difference between the two is a rollback. Yoast, Rank Math and the platform-native SEO panels all do the same core job competently; the decision is usually made by which CMS you already run, which makes it a less interesting purchase than the vendor marketing suggests.
The one thing no website SEO software on this page measures at all
Everything above is about your website. It is a property you own, a crawler can fetch it, and a tool can report on it. The other place your buyer now asks a question is not your website and cannot be crawled. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews compose a fresh answer for each person who asks, naming some businesses and not others, and there is no index anywhere that records whose name came up. A website crawler cannot see it, because it is not a property of your site.
AI Knows Us sells that one measurement and nothing else, and we are deliberately not in the ranking above, because a buyer who came here for a crawler should buy Screaming Frog or Sitebulb. We are not website SEO software. What we do is put your buyer's question to all five apps on a schedule and record which businesses were named. From the rendered text of our pricing page, read 21 October 2026: "One credit is one buyer question, asked on one AI app, once", "Most checks use one credit" and "A Claude check uses 3, because Claude costs us more to run". The ladder on our llms.txt the same day puts SEO Start at $149 a month with 0 buyer questions, 0 credits and 0 engines, which makes it a demand-harvest tier rather than an engine watch, so the first plan that reads all five surfaces is Growth at $299 with 100 buyer questions and 1,200 scheduled answers a month. A managed option is published in rupees only, Rs 88,499 to Rs 2,35,999 a month at a three month minimum, and we are not going to convert that for you.
Where the vendors on this page beat us, plainly. Ahrefs Brand Radar, read 21 October 2026, tracks prompts across ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude. AI Mode and Copilot are two surfaces we do not read at all. Its page also publishes the unit economics, "1 check per platform, location and update", "$0.020/check" and "Claude consumes 8 checks per update", which is a level of disclosure worth holding every vendor to including this one. Semrush, whose pricing page we read the same day, sells AI visibility inside a suite you may already be paying for, with "50 prompts to track daily" on Starter rising to "Unlimited prompts to track daily" on Advanced. If you already pay either of them, their module is the cheaper route and you should take it.
Two cautions about reading any vendor page, including these
First, a page can contradict itself. The Screaming Frog page we read on 21 October 2026 says in prose that "the crawl configuration, saving of crawls, and advanced features such as JavaScript rendering" are restricted in the free version, while its own feature table lists JavaScript rendering, crawl configuration, saved crawls, scheduling and structured data validation on the free side, with the crawl limit as the only stated difference. We are reporting both readings rather than picking the one that suits an argument. Check it against the current page before you plan around it.
Second, a 403 and a 404 are not evidence of absence. On 21 October 2026 moz.com would not serve this machine at all, so no Moz figure appears above, and seranking.com answered 404 on one pricing path and 200 on another within the same minute.
If the real question is which platform to build the site on rather than which software to add to it, the controls each builder hands you are the whole decision, and that is answered here: website and SEO services compared, and when one supplier should both build the site and rank it. On 21 October 2026 we read every link we could see on this site, 2,411 page bodies in all, against 2,325 live pages, and 971 of them, 41.8 percent, carried no inbound link from any of those bodies. That is an upper bound rather than a count, because a page whose body we cannot read may well carry a link. We measured the target above specifically: no other page on this site links to that one.
Questions about website SEO software
Is website SEO software the same thing as an SEO platform?
No, and the words are used loosely enough that you have to ask. A platform is the reading half sold as a subscription with dashboards on top. Website SEO software, as most people searching the phrase mean it, is the writing half that sits inside your CMS.
Do I need both?
Most sites need the writing half from day one and can delay the reading half until the site is too big to open by hand. Search Console covers the gap in between and costs nothing.
Can one tool do both?
Some claim to. Ask for the rollback story and ask who holds the credentials. A tool with write access to your site is a tool with write access to your site, whatever the feature grid calls it.
Does any of this software help with AI answers?
Only indirectly, and no crawler can measure the result. Several vendors now publish an AI module, which the section above names with its published allowance; the measurement of whether an assistant names your business is a separate job from reading your website, because the answer is not on your website.
