ChatGPT for SEO: the Google SEO jobs it does well, the one job it must never do, and what happened to SEO GPTs

How to use ChatGPT and OpenAI's tools for keyword grouping, briefs, articles, metadata and strategy, read against Google's own AI content guidance and OpenAI's help pages on 22 October 2026.

ChatGPT is useful for SEO when it shapes your work and harmful when it supplies your facts. Use it to group keywords by intent, turn a search into a brief, draft sections from notes you give it, write title and meta description options, sketch structured data and read a Search Console export. Never let it invent a figure, a price or a claim about your business. Google's guidance, updated on 1 October 2026, says generative AI "can be particularly useful when researching a topic, and to add structure to original content", and that every AI draft needs a manual fact check before it goes live. Everything below was read on Google Search Central and OpenAI's help centre on 22 October 2026.

Two different things people mean by ChatGPT SEO

Searches like "seo gpt", "openai for seo" and "chat gpt google seo" usually mean the first of two jobs: using ChatGPT as a tool to do SEO work for Google. That is what this page covers.

The second job is getting your business named when somebody asks ChatGPT a question. That depends on OpenAI's crawlers being allowed into your site and on your pages giving it something exact to quote. It is a separate piece of work, covered in how ChatGPT picks sources and the work that gets you named. On OpenAI's bots page, OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search, GPTBot crawls for model training, and each setting is independent.

What Google says about content written with ChatGPT

Google does not ask how a page was produced. It asks whether the page helps the reader. Three published statements settle it.

  • The 2023 Search Central post on AI content: "Appropriate use of AI or automation is not against our guidelines."
  • The spam policies, updated 28 August 2026: scaled content abuse includes "Using generative AI tools or other similar tools to generate many pages without adding value for users".
  • The generative AI guidance, updated 1 October 2026: "generative models don't retrieve facts, but predict a likely sequence of words based on their training data", so it is "critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness before publishing." That review covers title elements, meta descriptions, structured data and image alt text too.

One useful page drafted with ChatGPT and checked by a person is fine. A hundred pages with a place name swapped is the pattern Google names as spam. Our longer reading of this guidance is in Google's published position on AI content.

The SEO jobs ChatGPT does well

Each job below works because you hand ChatGPT real material and you can check what comes back.

JobWhat you give itWhat you check
Keyword groupingAn export from Keyword Planner or your SEO toolA sample from each group, and whether two groups really need two pages
Search intent labelsThe keyword list plus what you see on the results pageThat "buy" and "learn" searches are not mixed in one group
Content briefsThe target search, the questions people ask, your own notesThat every heading answers something a searcher wants
Drafting sectionsYour facts, figures and examples, in fullEvery sentence that states a fact
Titles and meta descriptionsThe finished pageLength, accuracy, and that the title matches the page
Structured dataThe page and the schema type you wantThe markup in Google's Rich Results Test before it ships
Search Console analysisA Performance report exportThat the pattern it reports is really in the numbers

Keyword grouping is the job where it saves the most time. Check the close calls against the results page, because two searches with one meaning can still get different results. The three methods are compared in keyword grouping software and a free way to do it by hand.

The one job it must never do

ChatGPT must never be the source of a fact on your page. Ask it to write about your company and it will fill the gaps with confident numbers: years in business, client counts, coverage, prices, a competitor's plan. Google's own guidance explains why. A model predicts likely words, so a likely number and a true number look the same in its output.

The fix is a habit, not a tool. Give ChatGPT every fact it is allowed to use, tell it to use nothing else, and tell it to write [CHECK] wherever it wants a fact you did not give it. Then read every number on the page against its source before you publish.

Writing an SEO article with ChatGPT, step by step

  1. Pick one search and read its results page. Note what the top pages answer and what they leave out.
  2. Write your notes first. Your own experience, figures, examples and opinions. This is the original part that gives the page its value, and it is the part ChatGPT cannot supply.
  3. Ask for a brief, then fix it. Headings in the order a reader needs them, with the direct answer at the top.
  4. Draft one section at a time. Short requests stay closer to your notes.
  5. Edit for one claim per sentence. Cut every line that would be true of any company.
  6. Fact check, then write the metadata. Title and meta description come last, from the finished page.

A prompt that keeps the draft tied to your facts looks like this:

You are editing an article for the search "[target search]".
Use ONLY the facts in the notes below. Do not add numbers,
names, prices or dates that are not in the notes.
If a sentence needs a fact I have not given you, write [CHECK].
Write the section "[heading]" in plain English, short sentences,
with the direct answer in the first two sentences. NOTES:

Building an SEO strategy with ChatGPT

A ChatGPT SEO strategy is only as good as the data you put in. Give it your Search Console export, your keyword list with volumes from Keyword Planner or your SEO tool, and the list of pages you already have, then ask it to find gaps, pages that compete with each other and pages that get impressions but few clicks.

Two OpenAI features help with research.

  • Search. OpenAI's help page says ChatGPT search "typically rewrites your query into one or more targeted queries" that it sends to search partners. That is useful for reading the web on a topic. It is not a copy of Google's results page, so read the real results page yourself before you plan a page around a search.
  • Deep research. It builds a research plan you can edit, works through the sources, and returns a report with citations or source links. You can restrict it to sites you name, which suits competitor research. OpenAI's help page says usage varies by plan.

Neither feature reports search volume. Take volumes from a keyword tool and quote one country's figure at a time.

What happened to SEO GPTs

Many people searching "seo gpt" are looking for a custom GPT built for SEO. OpenAI's help page on creating GPTs, read on 22 October 2026, changes that picture:

  • OpenAI says it is "planning to retire custom GPTs" and recommends moving workflows to Plugins.
  • New GPT creation and publishing are not available on personal accounts, including Free, Go, Plus and Pro. Existing GPTs can still be used.
  • For affected Enterprise workspaces, retirement is planned for 11 December 2026, and OpenAI says other plans are expected to follow the same timeline.

If your team relies on a custom SEO GPT, save its instructions and reference files now. The instructions were always the useful part, and they move to whatever replaces it.

The search your buyers now run inside ChatGPT

There is a second reason SEO teams open ChatGPT. Buyers ask it the same questions they used to type into Google, and the answer names a few businesses rather than listing ten links. Checking that takes a different method: ask the buyer's question without naming your company, in a temporary chat, several times, and save the sources it cites. AI Knows Us does exactly this across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, records who gets named, and then does the page and listing work that changes the answer.

Questions about using ChatGPT for SEO

Does Google penalise content written with ChatGPT?

No. Google's position is that appropriate use of AI is not against its guidelines. What it treats as spam is using AI to generate many pages that add no value for readers. A checked, useful page is judged like any other page.

Should I say a page was written with ChatGPT?

Google's guidance suggests giving readers context on how automatically generated content was made, where that makes sense for your audience. For shopping data the rule is firmer: Merchant Center requires AI-generated product titles and descriptions to be labelled, and AI images to carry IPTC metadata.

Can ChatGPT do keyword research?

It can group, label and expand a keyword list you give it. It does not report search volume, so take volumes from Keyword Planner or an SEO tool and let ChatGPT do the sorting.

Can I still make a custom SEO GPT?

Not on a personal plan. OpenAI's help page says new GPT creation is unavailable on Free, Go, Plus and Pro, and that custom GPTs are being retired in favour of Plugins. Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces can still create them for now, if their settings allow it.
