Choosing between a design studio, a small agency and a solo consultant near you in Singapore, and what each one cannot cover

The supplier size decision, what the Singapore search data says about the brand and consultant market, and the one question that separates the three.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 27 October 2026

The choice between a design studio, a small agency and a one person consultant in Singapore is not decided by price, because the three overlap heavily in the middle of the market. It is decided by one question: what happens to your work in the week your main contact is unavailable. A studio has a bench. A small agency has two or three people who can cover each other on most things and nobody who can cover everything. A solo consultant has no cover at all and usually the sharpest judgement of the three. Ask each shortlisted supplier to answer that question in writing before you compare fees, and the decision makes itself.

The second thing that decides it is what you are actually buying. A deliverable, such as a logo or a set of templates, suits a studio. A continuing programme across several channels suits an agency. A hard decision you need made once, such as which market to enter or which supplier to fire, suits a consultant. Buying a programme from a solo supplier or a single decision from a full service agency are the two mismatches that produce most of the complaints in this market.

What the Singapore brand and design market looks like in numbers

Pulled from Google's Keyword Planner on 27 October 2026, Singapore geo target, English, with Google's own 0 to 100 advertiser competition index alongside the monthly volume.

What a buyer typesSingapore searches a monthGoogle competition index
logo design firm26059, rated medium
branding agency14030, rated low
creative agency14068, rated high
design agency11051, rated medium
branding consultant4043, rated medium

The bid levels from the same pull add a reading that the volumes do not. One note on the money first: bid figures come back in the billing currency of whichever account asks, and ours bills in rupees, so what follows is a ratio between two Singapore queries read in the same currency on the same day rather than a dollar amount.

The floor of the "branding agency" range came back about 1.7 times the floor of "creative agency", even though Google rates branding lower on competition. And the floor of "branding agency" came back about 6 times the floor of "logo design firm". Those two ratios describe the market precisely. "Logo design firm" is the cheap end of the same category, where suppliers sell a defined deliverable at a defined price. "Branding agency" and "creative agency" are where suppliers sell an engagement, and the people bidding there expect a much larger contract. If you need a mark and a set of files, searching the cheap phrase puts you in front of suppliers who are set up for exactly that job. If you need positioning, naming and a system, the expensive phrase is where those suppliers live.

If naming is part of what you need, the process and the deliverable list are covered in brand naming companies, the process, the name types and how to judge a proposal.

The consultant and small agency searches

What a buyer typesSingapore searches a monthGoogle competition index
digital marketing advertising agency4,40031, rated low
marketing consultant7021, rated low
b2b marketing agency7048, rated medium
digital marketing consultant4065, rated medium

"Digital marketing advertising agency" at 4,400 a month is by far the biggest supplier search in this set and it is a generalist query, which tells you where the volume in this market actually sits: with buyers who have not yet decided what they need. The specialist phrases are tiny by comparison and far more precise. On bid level, in the same currency on the same day, the floor of "b2b marketing agency" came back about three times the floor of "marketing consultant", which is a fair proxy for how much more a B2B agency expects to charge than an individual adviser.

What a solo Singapore supplier looks like on paper

A one person supplier here is often a private limited company rather than a sole proprietor, which means the entity you are contracting with looks identical on a letterhead to a firm of forty. Read on 27 October 2026, subraa.com trades as a Singapore private limited company with a Serangoon address and describes itself as a freelance web designer and developer. It publishes no package price. Its own wording is that website designs "can range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars", and it offers a free domain and free hosting for one year on selected packages.

That is a representative shape and it is not a warning. A registered entity, a real address, one practitioner, no published price list. The things to establish are the ones company registration does not tell you: how many clients they carry at once, what they subcontract and to whom, and what the handover looks like if they stop.

For the equivalent arithmetic on the SEO side, including how a monthly figure converts into hours of a single person's time, see what an SEO consultant or freelancer charges in Singapore.

Reading a Singapore pitch, with one worked example

Many Singapore suppliers in this bracket publish no fee and open with a free session instead. On oom.com.sg, read on 27 October 2026, there is no price list and the enquiry form asks you to choose a monthly marketing budget band starting at $1,500 to $3,000, then $3,001 to $6,000, $6,001 to $10,000, and $10,001 and up. That band list is more informative than a price page. It tells you the smallest engagement the supplier wants, before anybody has spoken.

A second habit worth recognising is a price attached to something free. On firstpagedigital.sg, read on 27 October 2026, a free strategy session is promoted as "Valued at $4200" in the site navigation and as "Value SGD 2,500 For SGD 0" in the hero of the same page. Two figures for one free item, on one page, read on one day. The practical lesson is not about that firm; it is that a value placed on a giveaway is a marketing figure and carries no information about what the work costs. The only number worth putting in a comparison is the one on a quote for named deliverables.

The three things to ask each shape to admit

  • Ask the studio what it will not do. Most design studios do not buy media and do not run measurement. A studio that says it does both at full strength is usually describing a partner.
  • Ask the small agency which channel it is weakest in. Three to ten people cannot be deep in search, paid social, email, content and design at once. The honest answer names one and tells you who they bring in.
  • Ask the consultant who covers absence. The answer may be nobody, and that is acceptable for a defined project with a fixed end. For anything continuing, ask for a named second person and a documented handover.

Questions about choosing a supplier size in Singapore

Is a small Singapore agency cheaper than a large one?

Usually on the fee and not always on the total, because a smaller team subcontracts production and the subcontract arrives as a line on your invoice. Ask for the full month including production and media before comparing.

How do I check a one person supplier is a real business?

Ask for the company name and the Unique Entity Number in writing and look it up yourself. A solo practitioner here is frequently a private limited company, so the entity looks the same as a larger firm on paper, and the questions that matter are workload, subcontracting and handover.

What is a full service agency actually offering?

In Singapore the phrase usually means strategy, creative and media under one contract, with specialist production bought in. The useful follow up is which parts are delivered by their own staff. Ask for the list by name and role.

Do I search for a branding agency or a logo design firm?

They are different ends of one market. Google's Singapore readings on 27 October 2026 put logo design firm at 260 searches a month and branding agency at 140, and the bid floor for branding came back about six times the bid floor for logo design in the same currency on the same day. Search the phrase that matches the size of the job.

When is a consultant the wrong purchase?

When the work is continuous output rather than a decision. Weekly content, campaign management and always on paid media need cover, process and more than one pair of hands, and buying those from one person creates a single point of failure you will meet eventually.

The one real disadvantage of a solo supplier, and it is not capability

A consultant who is excellent and busy has almost no third party footprint. No press coverage, no directory profile with text in it, no case study on somebody else's domain, often not even a reviews page. That costs nothing when clients arrive by referral, and it costs a great deal the moment a Singapore buyer opens the question by asking an assistant which consultant to hire, because those answers are assembled from exactly the written record a referral based practice never builds. The same is true of the small studios that do the best work in this market. AI Knows Us measures whether a named supplier appears in those answers at all and which published sources the answer leaned on, and for a solo practitioner it is the cheapest way to find out that the referral engine has no backup.
