Digital marketing in Brisbane: Google Ads, social, content and branding, and the local rules that shape each
How to split a Brisbane marketing budget across paid search, social and content, what the council, the 2032 Games and Australian law change, and how to choose an agency in South East Queensland.

A Brisbane business buying digital marketing should decide the split before choosing the agency. Paid search on Google Ads catches people already looking, so it comes first for trades, clinics and services. Social advertising on Facebook and Instagram creates demand, so it suits consumer products, venues and events. Content and SEO build the pages both of those land on, and branding is the work that makes every channel cheaper. Then buy from a firm that will show you the ad accounts in your name, name the person running them, and report cost per enquiry rather than clicks.
Brisbane is a large market spread along a long corridor, and a few local rules change what a campaign can say and show. This guide covers both, plus how to compare agencies here.
The market you are buying for
The 2021 Census QuickStats for Greater Brisbane counts 2,526,238 people. That is one statistical area, but most businesses do not sell to all of it. A plumber in Wynnum, a cafe in West End and an accountant in Chermside are each in a smaller race, and many Brisbane firms also sell to the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Ipswich, Logan and Toowoomba.
So the first line of any brief is the service map: the suburbs and towns you will actually serve, and the jobs worth having in each. Every channel below is then targeted to that map rather than to "Brisbane". Google's help page on location targeting explains the location options in Google Ads, including radius targeting around a point, and lets you exclude places you do not serve.
Google Ads and AdWords management in Brisbane
Most of the "AdWords management" or PPC agency work sold here is Google Ads search campaigns, sometimes with Performance Max and Microsoft Ads alongside. What decides whether it pays is not the agency's size but four settings you can check yourself:
- Locations. Set to the service map, with the suburbs you do not serve excluded. Google's page describes a "Presence" setting and a broader "Presence or Interest" setting; a business that only serves locals should know which one its campaigns use.
- Search terms. The search terms report read every week and negative keywords added, so budget does not go on jobs you do not do.
- Conversions. Calls, forms and bookings tracked as conversions, so bidding learns from enquiries rather than clicks.
- Ownership. The ad account in your business's name, with the agency given access. If the account belongs to the agency, the history leaves with it.
Ask for the fee model in writing: a flat monthly fee, a percentage of ad spend, or a fee per campaign. A percentage of spend gives the agency a reason to raise your budget, which is worth knowing even when the agency is honest.
Social media marketing in Brisbane
Social advertising suits Brisbane businesses that sell something people did not know they wanted yet: venues, events, fitness, food, fashion and home improvement. A social media marketing company should be able to say which of three jobs it is doing for you, because they are priced and judged differently: paid ads run from Meta Ads Manager or TikTok Ads Manager, organic posting and community replies, or creator and influencer campaigns.
Two Australian rules shape social work. Since 10 December 2025, the eSafety Commissioner's social media minimum age FAQ says Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube and several other platforms must take reasonable steps to stop Australians under 16 from having accounts. A campaign aimed at teenagers needs a different plan. And the AANA Code of Ethics, effective from 1 February 2021, says in section 2.7 that advertising shall be clearly distinguishable as such, which covers paid creator posts as much as banner ads.
Content marketing and SEO copywriting
Content is what your ads and posts point at, and what search engines read. For a Brisbane business the useful content is rarely a weekly blog. It is a strong page for each service, a page for each area you serve that says something true about working there, answers to the questions customers ask on the phone, and proof: projects, photographs and named reviews.
If you buy content, buy it by the page with a brief for each, not by the word count. Ask who writes it, whether they have spoken to anyone in your business, and who checks claims before they go live. The SEO side of the same work, including how to plan suburb pages in waves, is covered in our guide to SEO in Brisbane.
Branding, signs and the 2032 Games
A branding agency in Brisbane is usually selling one of three things: a name and visual identity, a positioning and message, or a full rebrand across signs, vehicles and the website. Agree which before you compare quotes, and confirm in writing that you own the files and the rights to the logo when the work is paid for.
Physical branding meets council rules. Brisbane City Council's page on advertising device approval says self-assessable devices can be displayed without applying for approval if they comply with the Permitted Advertising Devices Designation, and that illuminated or electronic devices must also meet the Advertising Devices Technical Standards. Check before a new sign or a digital screen goes up.
The Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games will tempt many local campaigns. The federal Olympic Insignia Protection Act 1987 has a chapter on protected olympic expressions, which regulates their use for commercial purposes and gives the Australian Olympic Committee the power to license them. Do not put Olympic words or symbols in an ad, a product name or a hashtag campaign without legal advice.
The rules every Brisbane campaign shares
These are national, and an agency should raise them without being asked.
- Prices. The ACCC's guidance on price displays says businesses must display a total price that includes taxes, duties and all unavoidable or pre-selected extra fees, as a single figure. An ad with a "from" price that leaves out a mandatory fee is a risk.
- Reviews. The ACCC's online reviews page says it is against the law for a business to create fake or misleading reviews or to arrange for others to do so.
- Email and SMS. The ACMA's guide to avoiding spam says you need consent from each person, must identify your business, and must honour an unsubscribe within 5 working days, even when an agency sends the messages for you.
Choosing a digital marketing company in Brisbane
| Supplier | Fits when | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Google Ads specialist | Calls and enquiries from search are the main goal | The account is in your name, and conversions are tracked |
| Social media agency | You sell to consumers and need demand created | Which of the three social jobs they are doing |
| Content and SEO firm | Your pages are thin or your search traffic has stalled | Who writes, and how claims are checked |
| Branding studio | The business has outgrown its name or look | That you own the files and the rights |
| Full service agency | You want one contract and one report | That your main channel is not the smallest line |
Send the same one page brief to three firms of different sizes and compare what each will deliver in the first ninety days against the price. Verify each company on ABN Lookup, ask who personally runs your account, and read the notice period before the monthly fee.
Questions about digital marketing in Brisbane
Should a Brisbane trade business start with Google Ads or social?
Usually Google Ads, because people searching for a plumber or an electrician already need one. Social works better once you have proof to show: finished jobs, before and after photographs and reviews.
Does the agency need to be in Brisbane?
Not for ad management or content, which are done well remotely. Local presence helps for photography, video, events and signage. Knowing the suburbs you serve matters more than the agency's postcode.
Should one campaign cover the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast too?
Only if you serve them. If you do, give each its own campaign or ad group and its own landing page, so you can see what each area costs and earns.
Can we run Facebook ads aimed at teenagers?
Australians under 16 should not have accounts on the age-restricted platforms since 10 December 2025, so a campaign that depends on reaching them there needs a rethink. Speak to parents, schools or clubs instead, and check each platform's own advertising rules for young audiences.
When can we judge whether the marketing is working?
Agree the numbers before launch: cost per enquiry in the Google Ads account, cost per result in Ads Manager, enquiries by source in your own records, and Search Console clicks to your service pages. Read them monthly against your starting point. The outcome depends on competition, your offer and your budget.
When a Brisbane customer asks a chatbot instead of searching
Some of the people you pay to reach on Google now ask ChatGPT or Gemini first: who is a good electrician in Carindale, which agency in Fortitude Valley does restaurant marketing. The reply names two or three businesses and leans on reviews, directories, local press and the businesses' own pages. None of your ad spend appears in that reply. AI Knows Us works in that newer category: it puts those questions to the main assistants on a schedule and reports which Brisbane names come back and which sources the answers used.
