Do AI assistants answer a Singapore buying question differently in English, Mandarin, Malay or Tamil, and what to publish because of it
The language decision for a Singapore business, what our 64 reading audit can and cannot tell you about it, and the test to run yourself in an hour.
Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026
Publish in English first, then add a second language only where your category has real demand in it, and test the question in that language before you commit a content budget to it. That is the decision, and the reason it is a decision rather than an obvious yes is that a second language page costs the same to maintain as an English one and earns nothing where the buyer searches in English anyway.
This page gives the test, states plainly what our own Singapore audit covers and what it does not, and sets out which categories here genuinely need more than English.
What our audit covers, stated before anybody over-reads it
On 22 October 2026 we put 33 batches of buying questions to ChatGPT and Gemini with Singapore written into the text of each one. The snapshot taken that evening holds 64 blind readings, 32 on each engine. Every question was asked in English. So this dataset is evidence about English language Singapore answers and it carries no Mandarin, Malay or Tamil reading at all. Anybody quoting a language split from it would be quoting something that is not in it.
What the English readings do show is worth having before you spend on translation. The engines returned 757 distinct hosts, 161 of them on Singapore domains, and named four agencies repeatedly: First Page in 17 readings, MediaOne in 12, Impossible Marketing in 11, OOm in 10. In 26 of the 64 readings they named nobody at all. The open ground in this market is currently in English.
The one hour test, which gives you a real answer for your own category
- Take five of your actual buying questions. The words a buyer would use, not keywords.
- Ask each one in English with Singapore in the text, three times, on each engine you care about. Record who gets named and which sources appear.
- Ask the same five in the second language, same method. A native speaker should write the questions rather than a translation tool, because a translated question is a question nobody asks.
- Compare three things. Whether a business was named at all, whether the names differ, and whether the sources are local or international.
- Date the file and keep it. One run is a snapshot. The second run a month later is the measurement.
If the second language returns the same names and the same sources, you have learned that English is carrying your category and you have saved a content budget. If it returns different names, or nobody, you have found a gap with evidence behind it.
Which Singapore categories genuinely need more than English
| Category | The language position |
|---|---|
| Business and professional services | English almost entirely. A second language page here is usually a cost with no demand behind it |
| Healthcare, eldercare and clinics | Mandarin matters for an older catchment, and so does the review language |
| Food, retail and consumer services | Mixed, and it varies by catchment rather than by category |
| Religious, community and family services | Often the strongest case for Malay or Tamil content |
| Government adjacent and compliance work | English, because the published guidance is in English |
Note what that table does not do. It does not give a volume per language, because we have not measured one for this market and a number invented for it would be worse than no number. It is a starting hypothesis for your own test.
The trap in the tooling, and it is measurable
Do not trust a location or language setting to produce a market reading. The search interface we use accepts a country parameter, a language parameter and a location parameter, returns HTTP 200 for every one of them, and ignores all three. That is why our Singapore readings put Singapore into the question text rather than into a field. The same caution applies to any tool you buy that claims to report by country or by language: ask how the market is fixed, and if the answer is a dropdown, ask what happens when the dropdown is wrong.
What a second language page costs to keep
Count the maintenance before the build. Every page in a second language has to be updated whenever the English one changes, which means a price change, a service change or a new regulation becomes two edits rather than one. Over a year that is the real cost, and it is the reason most Singapore business service sites that launched a Mandarin section ended up with a Mandarin section eighteen months out of date. An out of date second language page is worse than no second language page, because it tells a reader something that is no longer true about your prices or your services. Commit to the maintenance or do not build it.
What to do with reviews, which is where language pays fastest
Reply in the language the customer used. A review thread that moves between languages naturally is read by both human buyers and by machines as evidence of who your customers actually are, and it costs nothing beyond attention. For a clinic or a local service business this is a better first investment than a translated website, because it produces language signal attached to real transactions.
Questions about language and AI answers in Singapore
Do I need Chinese, Malay and Tamil pages for Singapore
Only where your category has demand in them. Our guide to running one programme across several markets from Singapore covers the language tier decision alongside the market list, and the answer for most business services is that English carries it.
Will an assistant translate my English page for a Mandarin question
These systems do work across languages, and what you cannot assume is which page it will reach for. The test above answers that for your own category in an hour, which is faster than reasoning about it.
Is machine translation good enough
For a utility page it often is. For anything carrying a claim, a price or a regulated statement it is not, because a translated claim is a new claim and you are answerable for it in the language you published.
Does a second language help being named rather than just being read
Being named and being cited are two different outcomes and they fail for different reasons. A page in a second language can be read and still not produce a naming, which is why the test records both separately rather than merging them.
What is the cheapest first step
Review replies in the customer's language, and one check of your top five questions in the second language. Together those cost an afternoon and they usually settle the budget question.
What the English readings already tell you to do
Before any translation decision, there is a larger one sitting in the English data. In 26 of 64 Singapore readings on 22 October 2026 the engines handed a buyer no supplier at all, and our own business was named zero times and cited zero times in all 64. The open ground in this market is in the language you already publish in. AI Knows Us runs a fixed question list across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews and reports what was named and what was cited as two separate figures, which is the only way to tell a translation problem from a visibility problem.
