Do you still need Google top ten results to reach AI Overviews in Canada, and what the readings show
Why ranking remains the entry ticket for one surface and not for the others, the Canadian hosts that actually got cited, and where to spend if you rank nowhere yet.
Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026
For Google's AI Overviews, ranking still matters a great deal, because that surface draws on Google's own index and a page that ranks nowhere is rarely available to be summarised. For the standalone assistants it matters much less, because they compose answers from a wider and stranger set of sources, including government data properties and niche city publishers that would never hold a top ten position for a commercial query. So the Canadian answer is that you are looking at two different jobs. Ranking buys you AI Overviews. Being citable buys you the assistants, and the second is reachable without the first, which is where a Canadian company with no rankings should start.
The two jobs, side by side
| Google AI Overviews | Standalone assistants | |
|---|---|---|
| Source pool | Google's own index, so position matters | A live fetch plus training, so position matters less |
| Entry condition | Being indexed and competitive for the query | Being specific, dated and quotable on a host the engine reads |
| Fastest lever | Technical health and the familiar ranking work | Publishing a checkable answer, plus getting cited on third party hosts |
| Who can win from zero | Hard, because you compete with incumbents | Easier, because many answers currently name nobody |
What the Canadian readings show about source pools
On 22 October 2026 we put a 198 question Canadian buyer bank in 33 batches to the ChatGPT and Gemini product surfaces through a data provider, with Canada named inside the text of each question, because the provider accepts gl, hl and location parameters and ignores all three. Batch 33 names us in the question and measures a ceiling, so it is excluded from every figure. That leaves 64 blind Canadian readings, 32 per engine, with 2,992 citation URLs across 974 distinct hosts.
The hosts tell the story. Google's own documentation properties led, developers.google.com in 17 readings and support.google.com in 14, with blog.google in 8. Then came Canadian city agency domains and Canadian federal properties: torontoseo.com in 13 readings, clutch.co in 12, canadacreate.com in 11, canada.ca in 10, wisemedia.io in 9, competition-bureau.canada.ca in 9, ised-isde.canada.ca in 9, www150.statcan.gc.ca in 8 and ottawaseo.com in 7. One entry, ccn.web.tr, is the data provider's own fetch infrastructure rather than a publisher and is excluded from every source analysis.
Several of those Canadian hosts are small. A city specific agency domain cited in 13 of 64 readings is not winning a competitive top ten for a national commercial query, and it was quoted anyway. That is the practical demonstration that the assistants' source pool is not the search results page, and it is the reason a Canadian company with no rankings has a route in.
The engine split, and why it matters to this question
ChatGPT ran a live web search on all 32 of its Canadian readings. Gemini ran one on 20 of its 32. Gemini named a rival in 18 of its 32 readings against ChatGPT's 13, while ChatGPT named nobody at all in 19 against Gemini's 14. So the surfaces differ both in how often they look at the live web and in how willing they are to commit to a name, and a single blended visibility score would hide both. Report them separately.
Where to spend if you rank nowhere in Canada yet
- Technical health first, because it serves both jobs. Crawlable, indexable, fast, with correct language and region declarations. In Canada that means hreflang pairs with en-CA and fr-CA used consistently, which is also the commonest fault in Canadian programmes.
- Then the citable asset, because it is the faster win. One counted figure about your own market, with its denominator, method and date. Statistics Canada data is heavily cited by the engines and is free to build on.
- Then the Canadian third party hosts. Your own reading will name them. In ours they included a national directory, several city specific domains and four federal properties.
- Then the ranking work, for AI Overviews. It is slower and more expensive, and it is the only route to that one surface.
The Canadian accuracy point that applies to both jobs
Three of the most cited Canadian hosts in our reading were regulators or statistical agencies, with competition-bureau.canada.ca in 9 readings, ised-isde.canada.ca in 9 and www150.statcan.gc.ca in 8. A page that states the Competition Act position accurately, including the misleading representations provisions and the 2024 amendments, and that cites Statistics Canada properly with a date, agrees with sources the engines already trust. Agreement with a trusted source is a practical route to being quoted, and it has the side benefit of being the safer page to publish.
What to do in the next sixty days
- Fix language and region declarations, and verify that every French page is linked and annotated rather than merely existing.
- Take a baseline reading. Twelve buying questions with Canada named in the text, both engines, answers and sources saved and dated.
- Publish one counted figure about your own Canadian market, with denominator, method and date.
- Count the hosts in your own readings and pick the three most reachable.
- Re-read at sixty days, reporting the engines separately, and expect them to reflect the change at different speeds.
If the Canadian language architecture is undecided, that is the decision that sets the scope and the price and it is worked through in three decisions that set the scope and the price. If you want the comparison of what each queue is better at before allocating, it is in what each is better at and what the data shows.
Questions Canadian companies ask about AI Overviews and rankings
If I rank first, am I in AI Overviews?
Ranking is the entry condition rather than the guarantee, because the surface selects what to summarise. Treat a top ten position as the ticket and the content as what decides.
Can I appear in ChatGPT without ranking?
On our Canadian reading the engines cited small city specific domains and federal data properties repeatedly, so yes, and that is the route for a company with no rankings yet.
Which should a Canadian company do first?
Technical health, because it serves both. Then the citable asset, because it is faster than ranking. Then ranking, which is slower and buys the one surface the others do not.
Does French content reach these surfaces separately?
Treat it as a separate question set and a separate reading. A French question about a Quebec buyer returns different sources, and measuring it through an English question set measures the wrong thing.
How fast does a new page reach each surface?
At different speeds. On our reading one engine searched the live web on every Canadian question and the other on 20 of 32, which is why the re-read date differs by engine.
Measuring both surfaces rather than inferring one from the other
The mistake this page argues against is treating a ranking report as a proxy for assistant visibility, and our own Canadian reading shows why: the engines quoted hosts that hold no competitive ranking at all. AI Knows Us reads ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, reports each engine separately with its denominator, and keeps the raw answer text and the cited hosts so the two jobs can be managed as two jobs. Outside the United States and the United Kingdom the cheapest plan that reads all five engines is Growth at 199 dollars a month with 100 buyer questions watched, read on aiknowsus.com/pricing and aiknowsus.com/llms.txt on 22 October 2026.
