Free social bookmarking sites for SEO: what still works and what to skip

Bookmarking sites were a link tactic first and a discovery tool second, and the second job is the only one still worth your time.

Social bookmarking sites let people save, tag and share links to pages they like. For SEO, the honest summary is this: submitting your pages to long lists of bookmarking sites no longer helps rankings, and Google's own spam policies name "low quality directory or bookmark site links" as an example of link spam. A small number of bookmarking and curation platforms are still worth using, because real people find content there. Use those for what they are good at, which is getting a page seen by readers, and ignore any list that promises a link from a hundred sites.

This page explains how the tactic arose, why it stopped working, which kinds of platform are still useful, and a simple process for sharing a page without creating a footprint that looks like manipulation.

Where the tactic came from

In the late 2000s, services such as Delicious and Digg let anyone save a link and tag it. Those links were public, they were on well known domains, and search engines crawled them. SEOs noticed that a new page saved on many such sites got discovered quickly, and sold the practice as "bookmark submission". The tactic grew into bulk services that pushed one URL to hundreds of sites in minutes.

The sites were not built for that, and most of them faded. StumbleUpon, once one of the biggest, shut down in 2018. Others lost their audience or filled up with spam. When a platform's content is mostly submitted by marketers, nobody reads it, and a link nobody reads carries nothing for a human or a search engine.

What Google says

The spam policies in Google Search Central define link spam as creating links to or from a site primarily to manipulate rankings. Among the examples it lists is "low quality directory or bookmark site links". The page was last updated on 28 August 2026 at the time of writing. The sentence settles the question for bulk submission. A link you placed yourself, on a site made for placing links, is the kind of link the policy describes.

The policy does not say that sharing your page on a platform people use is a problem. The distinction is purpose. Posting a useful page where readers will find it is publishing. Posting it on a hundred sites that nobody visits, to make a number rise in a backlink tool, is manipulation.

A sixty second test for any bookmarking site

  1. Search for it by name. If the only results are other lists of bookmarking sites, walk away.
  2. Look at what is on the front page. Real discussion, with comments from different people, is a good sign. A page of identical posts about loans, casinos and pills is not.
  3. Check who posts. Are there ordinary users, or only marketers?
  4. Look for a way to get a human reader. If you cannot imagine a reader clicking your link there, you are building a footprint and nothing more.
  5. Read the rules. Many platforms limit self promotion. Follow them, or the post will be removed and your account flagged.

How to share a page the right way

Treat sharing as the last step of publishing, never as a step of link building.

  • Share a page worth saving. A guide, a calculator, a checklist, a dataset. A sales page gets no saves.
  • Write your own description. Say in a sentence what the reader will get. Copying the title and the meta description onto ten sites makes duplicate text.
  • Choose tags by the reader's wording, not by the keyword you want to rank for.
  • Share on one or two platforms where your audience reads. Depth beats breadth.
  • Join in. Answer replies and save other people's pages too. An account that only posts its own links looks like what it is.
  • If you want a broader view of listings that are worth the effort, our page on backlink submission sites lists the ones that are worth doing, with the same kind of test. For a plain explanation of why links matter in the first place, read what a backlink is.

What to do instead of submitting to a list

The hours you would spend filling in forms are better spent on two things. First, make a page that other sites want to cite: original data, a clear explanation, a free tool. A link that arrives because a writer found your page useful is the link that ranks and the one that survives updates. Second, make sure your business is described correctly in the places buyers already read: your Google Business Profile, your LinkedIn page, and the review sites for your field. Those pages are also the sources an assistant reads when it is asked to recommend someone.

Questions about social bookmarking for SEO

Do social bookmarking sites still help SEO?

Bulk bookmarking does not. Google lists low quality bookmark site links as link spam. Sharing a good page on a platform people really use can bring readers, and readers are what lead to genuine links later.

Are social bookmarking links dofollow or nofollow?

It varies by site, and many platforms use nofollow or similar attributes on user submitted links. The attribute matters less than the audience. A nofollow link on a busy page that sends readers is worth more than a followed link on a page nobody opens.

Is it safe to submit my site to bookmarking sites?

Submitting once to a platform where your readers are is safe. Pushing one URL to dozens of unknown sites is the pattern to avoid.

How many bookmarking sites should I use?

One or two. Choose the platforms your customers use for research and keep them up to date.

Is there a paid service worth buying for bookmarking?

No. A provider selling bulk bookmark submissions is selling the tactic Google's policy describes, so keep your money.

    Bookmarks and the assistants

The places where people save and discuss pages are also places where AI assistants pick up opinions. When a buyer asks ChatGPT or Perplexity which provider to trust, the answer often leans on discussion threads and review pages, because those hold plain human comparisons. A page that was shared honestly and discussed in a community can end up as a source in that answer, while a page pushed through a submission list leaves nothing for an assistant to read. AI Knows Us records which sources the assistants cite when they answer questions in your category, so you can see whether a community thread or a review page is the one doing the work.
