Full service or specialist agency, and the published comparison that got one firm named inside the answer

Two assistants gave the same breadth against depth answer and two different price pairs. Only one agency was named by either of them, and the reason given was that it had published a comparison of the two models.

Asked to explain the difference between a full service marketing agency and a specialist one, ChatGPT and Gemini gave the same answer, breadth against depth, in near identical tables, and both sent the reader to the same directory first. Their price pairs differ in a way that decides the choice: full service at 5,000 to 50,000 dollars a month against specialists at 2,000 to 20,000 in one answer, and 5,000 to 25,000 against 2,500 to 10,000 per service in the other. That last qualifier is the whole decision, because three specialists at 2,500 to 10,000 each is 7,500 to 30,000, which is more than the full service range it was supposed to undercut. And exactly one agency was named by either engine. The reason the engine gave for shortlisting it was that the firm discusses both agency models, so the asset that earned the recommendation was a published comparison of its own category.

What was asked, and what came back

One question, put to the ChatGPT and Gemini product surfaces through a data provider on 21 October 2026, at 22:19 and 22:37 UTC. Both ran a live web search.

  • ChatGPT returned 50 citations, led by eight from one agency directory, five from an agency's own site, eight across two others, and two from a discussion forum. It produced a five row comparison table, three price benchmarks attributed to the directory, and a four step approach.
  • Gemini returned two citations and produced a four row table with a retainer figure for each model, then a four platform vetting sequence.
  • Both engines cited the same third party guide, published by a brief marketplace, which is the one source common to both answers.

The difference, as both engines framed it

FactorFull serviceSpecialist
ScopeSearch, paid media, content, social, creative and sometimes development under one contractOne discipline, channel or industry
StrategyCan coordinate channels under a single planDepth in the chosen area
Management load on youOne main relationshipYou coordinate several vendors
AccountabilityJoined up reporting, if it is contracted forClearer responsibility for one channel
The main riskSome services weaker than others, or subcontractedStrong channel results that do not add up to business growth

Both answers reached this independently and neither declared a winner, which is right. The useful work is in the money and in the coordination cost, and that is where the two answers quietly disagree.

The price pairs, and the arithmetic that resolves them

  • ChatGPT, attributed to a directory's 2026 pricing guide: digital marketing agencies at roughly 5,000 to 50,000 dollars a month, SEO specialists at roughly 2,000 to 20,000 a month, and advertising services commonly at 100 to 149 dollars an hour. It added that these are market benchmarks rather than quotes and that the two ranges are not directly comparable, which is the correct caveat.
  • Gemini: full service at 5,000 to 25,000 and upwards a month, specialist at 2,500 to 10,000 a month per service.

Put the per service qualifier to work, because it is the only figure in either answer that changes a decision. One specialist costs 2,500 to 10,000 a month. Two cost 5,000 to 20,000, which already overlaps the full service range. Three cost 7,500 to 30,000, which is above the midpoint of every full service range given by either engine, and you are also carrying the coordination yourself.

So the honest rule is not that specialists are cheaper. It is that a specialist is cheaper for one problem, roughly equal for two, and more expensive for three, before counting the management time. If you need three channels run and you have nobody internally to coordinate them, the full service quote is the cheaper purchase even when its headline number looks larger.

The one named agency, and why it was named

Across both answers only one agency was named, by ChatGPT, in third place in its recommended approach. The stated reason for shortlisting it was that the firm discusses both agency models, with a link to its own article, and the engine told the reader to verify the firm's current capabilities and proposal separately.

We read that article on 22 October 2026. It is a blog post on the agency's own site, dated 20 May 2026, titled as a comparison of the two models. It explains both, compares them on strategy, execution and cost, covers using both together, discusses how AI search changes the choice, and recommends neither model: it concludes that the answer depends on fit, suggesting a specialist for a narrow problem where internal leadership can hold the strategy, and a full service firm where channels are disconnected or the business is repositioning. It contains no dollar figures at all. Its only numbers are two percentages attributed to an analyst firm, and it positions the publisher as an outsourced marketing leadership model.

Three things follow, and they are the reason this page exists.

  • The asset that earned the recommendation was a neutral comparison of the category, not a sales page and not a case study. The agency wrote the explainer the buyer was asking for, and the engine handed the buyer to the author.
  • It did not need to be self serving to work. The article names no winner and prices nothing, and the engine's own pricing figures came from a directory instead.
  • Publishing the comparison is a channel in itself. Of 50 citations behind that answer, the ones that produced a named supplier were on a supplier's own site.

How to decide, in order

  1. Count the problems, not the channels. One clear problem and an internal owner points to a specialist. Several disconnected channels and nobody coordinating them points to full service.
  2. Price three specialists against one full service quote on the same scope and the same reporting, then add your own management hours to the specialist side.
  3. Use the directories for evidence, not for ranking. Both engines sent the reader to the same one first. Read the reviews and the minimum project sizes, and treat placement as paid.
  4. Ask the same four questions of every candidate: who does the work, what is inside the fee, how success is measured, and whether you keep ownership of the advertising accounts and the data. Both answers converged on exactly these.
  5. Consider the hybrid both engines described. One lead partner or internal marketing lead holding strategy, with specialists bought underneath, which is also what the named agency's own article recommends for most brands.

If you are leaning full service, the test is what the phrase has to include before it means anything, which our note on what full service has to cover sets out as a checklist.

The measurement neither answer included

Both answers were about scope and price. Neither reported which agencies get named when a buyer asks this question, which is the thing that decided which single firm appeared in front of this reader. In our own measurement that is not an incidental detail: across 635 readings of US buying questions on 22 October 2026, agency and vendor names were produced 1,053 times from a roster of 24, and the mechanism was visible every time in the citation list.

AI Knows Us measures exactly that, and sells nothing else. We put the buying questions to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, record every business named and every source cited, and report them with the date. We are not an agency of either kind, full service or specialist, so nothing here is a bid for the work.

Our own rates, verified on 22 October 2026, because this page is about comparing published prices. In the US and the UK the ladder runs SEO Start at 149 dollars a month, Growth 299, Scale 599, SEO Scale 699, Inbound 1,099, Outbound 1,299, Agency 1,299 and Everything 1,799. Outside the US and the UK the first two tiers are 99 and 199, so the floor is a US and UK floor rather than a global one. SEO Start reads 0 questions on 0 engines, so Growth at 299 is the cheapest plan that reads all five surfaces, and a Claude reading costs 3 credits where the others cost 1.

Where a rival is stronger, by name, and read by us the same day. tryprofound.com publishes single sign on, SAML and SOC 2 with up to nine answer engines on its enterprise tier, and peec.ai/pricing lists role based permissions and single sign on among its plan features. Our own pricing document, 119,203 bytes read on 22 October 2026, renders no single sign on, no SAML, no SOC 2, no ISO certification, no data processing agreement and no white label, and we read five surfaces rather than nine. It also contradicts itself for anyone buying on behalf of several brands, listing businesses covered as 1 1 1 1 1 1 10 1 across the plans while the row beneath reads more than one business, no, in every column.

The limits of this reading, stated plainly. It is one question per engine on one night, and one agency article fetched the next morning. The price benchmarks above are the engines' own attributions to third party directories, not figures we verified with those directories, and the arithmetic in this page is calculated from the ranges as quoted.

Questions US buyers ask when choosing between agency models

Is a specialist agency cheaper than a full service one

For one problem, yes. The figures in these answers put a specialist at 2,500 to 10,000 dollars a month per service against full service at 5,000 to 25,000 or 50,000. Buy three specialists and the specialist route costs 7,500 to 30,000 plus your own coordination time, which is no longer the cheaper option.

What does a full service marketing agency cost a month in the US

The two answers gave 5,000 to 50,000 and 5,000 to 25,000 and upwards, both attributed to third party benchmarks rather than to any agency's published rate card. Ask for the scope and the deliverable count behind any quote, because the same monthly figure can cover one channel properly or five thinly.

Should I hire one agency or several

Decide who holds the strategy. If that is you or an internal marketing lead, several specialists work and the depth is real. If nobody internal can coordinate channels, the single relationship is worth paying for, and both engines and the one named agency's own article agree on that split.

Why did the assistant name only one agency

Because only one of the sources behind the answer was an agency that had published a comparison of the question being asked. The rest of the evidence was directories and third party guides, which produce benchmarks rather than names.

How do I get my own agency named in these answers

Publish the comparison your buyers are actually searching for, with the trade offs stated honestly and no winner declared, on your own domain. That is what happened here, and it is checkable: ask the question yourself on each assistant, with no brand name in it, and see which sites the answer is built from. Run it again a week later, because the sources move.
