Google Ads for auto repair shops: bid on the job, use car makes the way Google allows, and count bays filled, not clicks

How an independent repair shop should split Local Services Ads from search campaigns, build ad groups by job and by make, write a warranty message that is true, and judge an agency on booked repair orders.

Google Ads for an auto repair shop work best as two products run side by side. Local Services Ads, where Google lists Auto Repair Shop, Brake Shop, Oil Change Service, Tire Shop and Transmission Shop as categories and you pay per lead, catch the driver who wants a nearby shop now. Search campaigns, built by job (brakes, check engine light, timing belt, inspection) and by car make, catch the driver who knows what is wrong and wants a shop that does it. Send each click to a page about that job, answer the phone live, and judge every campaign by booked repair orders, not by clicks or calls.

Two Google products, two different buyers

Google's Local Services Ads help page, read on 21 October 2026, lists these automotive categories: Auto Repair Shop, Auto Body Shop, Auto Glass Repair Service, Auto air conditioning Service, Brake Shop, Car Inspection Service, Oil Change Service, Tire Shop, Transmission Shop and Towing, among others. Leads arrive as calls, messages or bookings, and you pay for leads rather than clicks. The same page says the Google Verified badge is currently unavailable for verticals in the auto category, so an auto shop's listing will not carry that badge today. It also warns that a shop which regularly fails to answer calls or messages may see its ad ranking suffer.

Most independent shops start with Local Services Ads plus one tightly built search campaign, then add more only when the first two are measured. Our overview of local search advertising compares how each local ad format charges.

Build search campaigns by job, not by the word "mechanic"

"Mechanic near me" is expensive and vague. The person who types "grinding noise when braking" or "AC blowing warm air car" has told you the job, the urgency and the page they want to land on. Group your keywords that way.

Brakesbrake repair [town], squeaky brakes fix, brake pads replacement costBrake page with what an inspection covers and how quotes work

Make specialistBMW repair [town], Subaru head gasket, Toyota hybrid serviceA page for that make with the jobs you do on it
Inspection and seasonalstate inspection [town], winter tires installedInspection or tire page with hours and wait time

Add negative keywords early: "how to", "DIY", "parts", "manual", "salary", "jobs", "school" and "free". Repair shops often see a large share of clicks from people fixing the car themselves or looking for work. Read the search terms report every week for the first two months and keep adding to the list.

Location and schedule

Google's location targeting help page says radius targeting needs at least 1 km around a location, and that a very small radius may show ads only now and then. Draw the area around where your customers actually drive from, which for most shops is a few towns, not the whole metro. Run search ads when someone can answer the phone or the online booking can take the job.

Car make names: what Google allows

Independent shops often ask whether they can bid on "Honda repair" or write "BMW specialist" in an ad. Google's Trademarks policy, read on 21 October 2026, says Google will not restrict trademarks used as keywords. When a trademark owner complains, Google will also not restrict ads whose landing page is mainly about selling or clearly providing the services, replacement parts or compatible services for that trademark, as long as the page shows a way to buy and commercial details such as rates or prices. It will restrict trademark use in a way that is confusing, deceptive or misleading.

So "Independent Honda service in Dayton, factory-schedule maintenance" with a landing page that lists your Honda jobs and prices is on solid ground. "Official Honda Service Center" when you are not a dealer is not. Say "independent" in the ad and on the page.

The warranty message, written so it stays true

Many drivers think they must go back to the dealer to keep their new car warranty. The FTC rule at 16 CFR 700.10(c), read on the eCFR on 21 October 2026, says no warrantor may make the continued validity of a warranty depend on using only authorized repair service or authorized parts for non-warranty service and maintenance, unless the item is provided free or the FTC has granted a waiver. The same section lets a warrantor refuse to pay for damage it can show was caused by unauthorized parts or service.

That supports an honest ad line such as "Routine maintenance here does not void your factory warranty. We follow the maker's schedule and keep the records." It does not support "dealers are lying to you" or a claim that any repair you do is covered. Keep your service records tidy so a customer can show them if a warranty claim is ever questioned.

Prices, payments and offers in the ad

  • Fixed price jobs. An oil change, a brake inspection or a state inspection with a stated price gives the searcher a reason to choose you over the ad above. Use price assets or say it in the headline, and keep it current.
  • Financing. If an ad states a monthly payment, the number of payments or a down payment, Regulation Z at 12 CFR 1026.24(d) says the ad must also give the down payment, the repayment terms and the annual percentage rate. "Pay over time, ask us how" avoids triggering it; "$99 a month for your transmission" triggers it.

Measure booked repair orders

A call is not a customer. Track calls from ads with a forwarding number, mark which ones booked a job, and record the repair order value. Then work out cost per booked job and the average repair order for each campaign. A brake campaign that brings fewer calls but larger tickets may beat an oil change campaign that brings many small ones.

Reviews matter for Local Services Ads ranking and for the click on a search ad. The FTC's consumer review rule, 16 CFR 465.4, bars giving anything in exchange for a review that expresses a particular sentiment. Ask every customer the same way, and reply to the bad ones calmly. Our guide to marketing for car repair covers reminders, declined work follow up and the rest of the system that paid ads sit inside.

Hiring an auto repair PPC company

A specialist can save hours each week. Before you sign, check five things:

  • The Google Ads account is created in your name and you keep admin access if you leave.
  • They show the search terms report, not only a dashboard of clicks.
  • They report cost per booked job using your shop management records, not cost per lead.
  • They manage Local Services Ads lead disputes and replies, or say clearly that you do.
  • The fee is a flat management fee or a stated percentage of spend, with no long lock-in.

Questions about Google Ads for auto repair shops

Are Local Services Ads available for auto repair?

Yes. Google's help page, read on 21 October 2026, lists Auto Repair Shop, Brake Shop, Oil Change Service, Tire Shop, Transmission Shop and other automotive categories. It says the Google Verified badge is currently unavailable for auto verticals.

Can I bid on car brand names like Toyota or Ford?

Yes as keywords. In ad text, describe yourself honestly as an independent shop, and send the click to a page that offers your services and prices for that make. Never imply you are an authorized dealer.

Can my ad say servicing with us keeps the warranty valid?

For routine, non-warranty maintenance, the FTC rule at 16 CFR 700.10(c) bars a warrantor from voiding the warranty because you used an independent shop. Keep records, and do not claim that every repair is covered.

How should I judge whether Google Ads are working?

By cost per booked repair order and the value of those orders, campaign by campaign, measured over at least two months.

When the driver asks an assistant instead of Google

A driver with a warning light may now ask ChatGPT or Gemini which independent shop near them is good with Subarus, or whether a quoted brake price sounds fair. The assistant names a few shops and gives reasons, drawn from reviews, listings and the pages it can read. That answer sits outside your ad account and costs nothing per click, and few shops have ever looked at it. AI Knows Us belongs to the new category built to show whether the assistants name your shop for the jobs you want, and what they base it on.
