Google Ads for painters: split interior, exterior and cabinet work, run Local Services Ads beside search, and count the won estimate
How a painting company should set up Google Ads and Local Services Ads, the season and the service area, the lead-safe rule that covers ads, and what to measure.

Google Ads for painters works when the account is split by the kind of job, kept inside the area your crews really drive to, and judged on estimates that turned into booked jobs. Run separate campaigns for interior, exterior and specialist work such as cabinet painting, send each one to a page about that job, and add Google's Local Services Ads, which lists "Painter" as a US category and charges per lead. If you work on homes built before 1978, the EPA's lead-safe certification rule covers offering the work, which includes your ads.
Why painting PPC needs its own setup
A painting company sells several different jobs under one trade name, and each one is searched differently.
- Exterior work is seasonal. In most climates it books in late winter and spring for the dry months. Searches and your capacity both move with the weather.
- Interior work runs all year, and peaks around moves, sales of homes and the holidays.
- Cabinet painting, deck staining and commercial repaints are smaller searches with higher job values and different buyers.
- Many searchers are do-it-yourselfers. "How to paint a ceiling" and "best exterior paint" are not people looking for a contractor, and they will spend your budget if you let them.
The campaigns worth running
| Campaign | Example searches | Where the click lands |
|---|---|---|
| Your company name | company name, name plus reviews | Home page with a quote button |
| Exterior painting | exterior house painters [town], house painting quote | Exterior page with finished homes from your area |
| Interior painting | interior painters near me, painting contractor [town] | Interior page with rooms you have done |
| Cabinets and specialist | kitchen cabinet painting, deck staining | One page per service |
| Commercial | commercial painting contractor, office repaint | Commercial page with past projects and insurance details |
Give exterior its own budget so you can raise it before the season and cut it when the schedule is full. A campaign that mixes exterior and interior makes that impossible.
Negative keywords for painters
Add these before you spend a dollar: "jobs", "hiring", "salary", "apprentice", "how to", "DIY", "tutorial", "art", "canvas", "portrait", "car", "auto", "spray gun", and paint brand names unless you also sell paint. Then read the search terms report weekly for the first month and keep adding.
Keep the ads inside your service area
Draw the target around where crews will actually go, by town or by radius. Google's location targeting help page (read 21 October 2026) notes it does not allow radius targeting under 1 km, which will not matter for a painter, and suggests "Presence" when you only want people who are in your area rather than people elsewhere who show interest in it. For a local trade, "Presence" stops clicks from people researching a town they do not live in. If you set up ad schedules so ads run only when someone can answer the phone, Google's ad schedule page says the campaign then paces toward a monthly spend of 30.4 times your average daily budget.
Local Services Ads beside search
Google's Local Services Ads getting started page for the United States (answer 6224841, read 21 October 2026) lists "Painter" as an eligible category. These ads appear at the top of results, the business is screened by Google, and the page says you "pay only for leads related to your business and the services you offer".
The two formats do different jobs:
- Local Services Ads catch the homeowner who wants to call a vetted painter today. They work best for a company that answers fast.
- Search campaigns let you choose the message, send the click to a specific job page, and push the work you want, such as cabinets in the slow months.
Most painting companies with spare capacity run both. Our page on PPC for contractors covers the same split for general contractors and remodelers who sell bigger projects.
The lead-safe rule reaches your ads
Under the EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule, 40 CFR 745.81(a)(2)(ii) (read on eCFR, 21 October 2026), "no firm may perform, offer, or claim to perform renovations without certification from EPA" in target housing or child-occupied facilities, unless an exception applies. Target housing means housing built before 1978, with a few exceptions. The rule's definition of renovation includes surface preparation such as sanding and scraping, which is most exterior repainting, and an ad offering the work is an offer. So if you bid on searches for older homes, or just serve a town full of them, get the firm certified first, and say so on your pages. It is also a reason for homeowners to pick you.
The landing page decides the cost per estimate
A homeowner comparing painters wants to see three things quickly: that you do their kind of job, that your finished work looks good, and that they can get a quote without a fuss. Each job page should carry:
- Photos of finished jobs from your own crews, ideally in nearby towns.
- What the job includes: prep, repairs, primer, number of coats, clean-up.
- Your licence number where your state requires one in ads, and your insurance.
- Lead-safe certification if you work on older homes.
- A short quote form and a phone number at the top.
Google also lets you add a lead form asset to the ad itself. Its help page says leads are stored for 60 days and the CSV download covers only the last 30, so connect the form to your CRM or download often.
Count the won estimate, not the form
A form fill is not a job. Track calls and forms as early steps, then mark which estimates were booked and send that back to Google Ads with offline conversion import, which matches each click's ID (the GCLID) to the result, or with enhanced conversions for leads. The account then learns which searches bring jobs. Google's conversion window can run from 1 to 90 days, with 30 as the default for Search. Exterior estimates given in March and booked in May need a window longer than the default.

Questions about Google Ads for painters
Are Google Ads worth it for a painting company?
Usually yes in the weeks before your busy season and whenever the schedule has gaps, as long as you track which clicks became booked jobs. When the calendar is full, cut the budget rather than collecting leads you cannot serve.
Can painters use Google Local Services Ads?
Yes, in the United States. "Painter" is on Google's list of eligible Local Services Ads categories, and you pay per lead after passing Google's screening.
Should a painter bid on paint brand names?
Only if you sell or specialise in that brand. Otherwise those searches come mostly from do-it-yourselfers comparing paint. Google does not restrict trademarks used as keywords, but a brand owner can complain about its name in your ad text.
Do painting ads need lead-safe certification?
If you offer work that disturbs paint in homes built before 1978, the EPA rule says a firm may not offer it without certification, and an ad is an offer.
When should a painter start exterior ads?
A few weeks before homeowners start booking for the dry season in your area, so the estimates land before the schedule fills. Watch last year's enquiry dates and start just ahead of them.
When the homeowner asks an assistant instead
Some homeowners now skip the search page and ask ChatGPT or Gemini "who are good house painters near me who do older homes". The reply names a few companies and gives reasons taken from reviews, licence records and job pages. No bid places a painter on that list, so it is worth knowing whether your company is on it and what the answer says about you. Tracking those answers is what AI Knows Us does, as part of a new category that reports whether assistants name a business.
