Google position checker: how to check your ranking position and get a number you can trust

The free and paid ways to check where you rank in Google, why two checks disagree, and the settings that make a position check repeatable.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 12 October 2026

The most reliable position checker for your own site is Google Search Console, because it reports the average position Google actually served, by query, country and device, for free. For checking a position right now, or for checking a competitor, use a rank tracker such as Semrush Position Tracking, Ahrefs Rank Tracker, AccuRanker, Wincher or SERPWatcher, with the location and device pinned. Searching for yourself in a browser gives a different answer, because Google personalises results by location, history and device.

Two people checking the same keyword on the same day will often read two different positions, and both are correct for the search they ran. Once you know what changes the number, you can set up a check that gives the same answer every time, which is the only kind of position number worth putting in a report.

Why your position changes between checks

  • Location. The biggest single factor. Google uses the location of the search, down to the city and often tighter, for anything with local intent. The same query in two suburbs returns different orders.
  • Device. Mobile and desktop are separate result sets with different layouts and different numbers of results above the first blue link.
  • Search history and signed in state. Pages you have visited move up for you. This is why checking your own site while logged in flatters you.
  • Result features. An AI Overview, a map pack, a featured snippet, shopping units, People Also Ask and video carousels all sit between the top of the page and position one. Being at position three can mean being far down the screen.
  • Time. Google reorders results through the day, and more so for news and anything seasonal.
  • Personal versus a clean check. Incognito removes your history but not your location, so an incognito check is cleaner, not clean.

The free method, in order

  1. Open Search Console and go to the Performance report. Verify the domain first if you have not.
  2. Turn on the Average position metric alongside clicks and impressions. It is off by default.
  3. Filter to a query, then switch to the Pages tab to see which of your pages Google chose for it. That second step matters: a page you did not intend is a common cause of a position that will not move.
  4. Add a country and a device filter. An unfiltered average across every country and both devices is a number with no meaning.
  5. Compare the last 28 days against the previous 28. Position moves slowly, and a weekly comparison is mostly noise.

Two things to know about the Search Console number. It is the average position of your best ranking page for that query across every impression, so it is a real measurement rather than a single snapshot. And an impression counts wherever your result appeared on the page, so a position of eleven can mean the top of page two.

Google documents the metrics in its own note on what impressions, position and clicks mean, which is worth reading once so that you know exactly what you are averaging.

What a rank tracker adds

Search Console tells you where you ranked, after the fact, for your own site. A rank tracker tells you where you rank today, for any site, including your competitors. Most teams need both.

Choose on four things: whether it checks by city rather than country, whether it separates mobile from desktop, whether it records which result features were present, and how often it refreshes.

Setting up a check that repeats

Pin every variable and write it in the report header, so that next month's number is comparable:

  • One named location per tracked market, at city level for local businesses.
  • Device stated, and mobile as the default for consumer queries.
  • Language and country set deliberately rather than left at the tool default.
  • The same day of the week and the same time of day each run.
  • Result features recorded, so a drop caused by a new AI Overview reads differently from a drop caused by a competitor.
  • The tracked keyword list frozen for the quarter, with additions in a separate list, so the average is not moved by what you added.

Note also that scraping a hundred results in one request is no longer how tracking works, since Google stopped serving that many results per page in 2025. Tools now assemble deep positions from several requests, which is why some of them report beyond the first few pages less often. Track the keywords where you are between position four and twenty, because that is the range where work changes the outcome.

This page covers checking a position. For turning positions into a report somebody will read, see what a position really measures and how to build a ranking report, and for moving one, see how to diagnose a position and then move it.

Questions buyers ask about google position checker

What is the most accurate free Google position checker?

Search Console, because the number comes from Google's own logs rather than from a simulated search. It covers your own verified sites and reports by query, country, device and date. Pair it with one free tracker for a daily snapshot and for competitors.

Why does the tool say position four when I see myself at nine?

Almost always location, device or search history. Your browser knows where you are and what you have clicked; the tool is checking a named location on a specified device with no history. Set the tool to your own city and device and the two numbers converge.

Is average position in Search Console the same as a rank?

It is an average of the positions Google served, weighted by impressions, which makes it a more honest summary than a single check. A rank tracker gives you one position at one moment. Use the average for trend reporting and the tracker for today.

How often should I check positions?

Weekly is enough for most sites and monthly is enough for small ones. Daily checking produces movement that mostly reverses. Check immediately after a release, a migration or a confirmed Google update, because those are the moments when a change is real.

Does position one still get most of the clicks?

The top position still takes by far the largest share of clicks on queries where a blue link is the first thing on the screen. Where an AI Overview, a map pack or a shopping unit sits above the results, the clicks available to every position shrink, which is why recording the features present matters as much as recording the number.

One position no checker reports

Your checker says you are in position four. For the same query typed into an assistant, there is no position four, only whether the paragraph names you.

Run both readings side by side for your ten main queries. Some will show you ranking well and absent from the answer, which is a useful mismatch: the page may rank on authority but not answer the question plainly enough to be used. Take each assistant reading more than once, as the replies change. The repeat sampling across assistants is something AI Knows Us does for you.
