Has AI search changed how Australia buys, and the state layer that now frames the answer

No published Australian demand figure exists, so here is the supply side reading with its engine split, and the method that gives you your own number.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026

The supply side has changed and we can prove it. The demand side has no Australian figure, and anybody quoting one is quoting an estimate built from a global survey. So the useful answer comes in two halves: what is measurable about what the engines now say to an Australian buyer, and how to get your own figure for whether your own buyers use them.

Start with the figure to stop looking for. There is no published, reproducible statistic for the share of Australian buyers who consult an AI assistant before contacting a supplier. We have not run that study, and we have found none for this market that names its sample, its method and its date. A page printing a percentage for it is printing a guess with a decimal point.

The supply side, measured on 22 October 2026

We put 33 batches of real buying questions to ChatGPT and Gemini with Australia written into the text of each one. The market has to go in the prompt because the search interface we use accepts country, language and location parameters, answers HTTP 200 to all of them, and ignores every one. The snapshot taken that evening holds 64 blind readings, 32 on each engine, with the brand batch excluded.

So the answer an Australian buyer gets today contains real suppliers 36 times in 64 and nobody 28 times in 64. Keep the engine split separate and never average it. Gemini named a business in 20 of its 32 readings against ChatGPT's 16 of 32, so the two engines genuinely disagree in this market.

What the engines named when they named anybody

Six Australian agencies carried almost all of it. Online Marketing Gurus in 12 of the 64 readings, Rocket Agency in 8, StudioHawk in 8, Prosperity Media in 8, Sparro in 3 and King Kong in 3. On the tool side, Semrush in 14, Ahrefs in 12, HubSpot in 11, Otterly in 7, Peec in 4 and BrightLocal in 3.

That concentration is the evidence that behaviour has changed on the supply side. An Australian buyer asking for a shortlist is handed roughly four to six firms, which is narrower than the first page of a search result and far narrower than a directory. Being inside or outside that set is now a commercial fact about an Australian agency, and none of those firms bought their way in.

What changed in the sources, which is the bigger shift

Three things differ from a search result and each changes a decision.

  • The state is in the answer. 66 distinct Australian government hosts appeared 139 times across 25 of the 64 readings. A buyer researching a supplier is being handed a regulator's page alongside the names, which frames the purchase in compliance terms before anybody has pitched.
  • The shortlist is shorter. Ten organic results and several ads become four to six names.
  • An answer can contain nobody. A search result always lists somebody. An assistant can decline, and in this market it declined 39 times in 64. That failure mode does not exist in search and it is the one worth watching.

What an Australian business should say to a board about this

Three sentences and no more. First, that there is no reliable national figure for how many Australian buyers consult an assistant, and anybody offering one should be asked for its sample. Second, that what the assistants answer is measurable and has been measured, with the denominator, the engine split and the date attached. Third, that the business own exposure is knowable from its own enquiry form within a quarter. A board paper built on those three is defensible. One built on a borrowed adoption percentage gets dismantled by the first person who asks where the number came from, and they will be right to ask.

The method that gives you your own demand number

You do not need a market study. You need two questions on your own enquiry form and one quarter of patience.

  1. Ask every enquirer where they first heard about you. Free text, not a dropdown, because a dropdown returns the options you thought of.
  2. Ask whether they checked anything before contacting you, and what. This is the question that surfaces an assistant, because an assistant visit leaves no referrer and your analytics cannot see it.

Then watch one derived signal. Branded search rising while non branded stays flat is the signature of somebody being told your name elsewhere and then looking you up. It is visible in Search Console for free and it is the closest thing to an attribution trail this channel leaves. Our guide to what a good mention rate is, without inventing an industry benchmark covers reading the supply side half, and the same question measured for India shows what the answer looks like where the readings came out differently.

Questions about AI search and Australian buying behaviour

Is there a reliable figure for how many Australian buyers use ChatGPT before buying

Not one we can check, and that is the honest state of it. The measurable half is what the engines say when asked, and that half is on this page with its date and its denominator.

Does this cover Google AI Overviews

No. This run is ChatGPT and Gemini. Perplexity, Claude and AI Overviews were not in it. Our product watches five surfaces, this dataset covers two, and the two never get merged into one sentence.

Why is the Gemini result different from the ChatGPT one

They are different retrieval systems and they behave differently, which is why we report them separately. Gemini named a business in 20 of its 32 Australian readings and ChatGPT in 16 of its 32, and averaging those would describe a market that does not exist.

How often should an Australian business retake this reading

Monthly is enough to see movement and cheap enough to sustain. The scorecard behind this page was still being written on the evening of 22 October 2026, which illustrates how quickly a number in this category stops being current.

Does this apply to a purely local Australian business

It applies differently rather than less. In a country this size the engines answered city level questions with varying precision, and our page on buying national or local search work in a country this size covers which of the two you are actually purchasing.

The institution now standing beside your pitch

The change an Australian seller can act on is not a usage statistic. It is that 66 distinct Australian government hosts appeared 139 times across 25 of our 64 blind readings on 22 October 2026, with business.gov.au in 15, the consumer regulator in 13, the communications authority in 8, the privacy regulator in 6 and the statute register in 5, plus state portals from Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and four other jurisdictions. No search result does that. It means an Australian buyer researching your category is being handed the state's framing of it alongside whichever supplier names appear, and a supplier who cannot speak to that framing is being compared against a government page it never mentions. That is a publishing instruction rather than a worry: state the rule, name where it came from, say what you do about it. AI Knows Us reads a fixed question list across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews and shows every source behind every answer, which is the only way to see which institution is standing next to you. In our own case nothing was standing next to us at all, because our name appeared in zero of the 64.
