hipages, Seek, Facebook and Google for an Australian business, and the measured absence that decides a listing budget

Which platform suits which sale, and a 64 reading measurement in which hipages appeared in none of 1,010 hosts.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026

The choice is not the platforms against Google. It is whether your sale is a job somebody wants quoted today, a role somebody wants filled, an audience somebody wants reached, or a decision somebody is still working out. hipages suits the first, Seek the second, Facebook the third, and search the fourth. Most Australian businesses need two of the four and buy three.

What this page adds is a measurement that changes how a listing budget should be read, and it concerns absence rather than presence.

Which platform suits which sale

What you are sellingWhere it belongs firstWhy
A trade job with a quotable scopehipages or an equivalent lead platformThe buyer wants three quotes today and the platform already holds that intent
A roleSeekCandidate supply is the product and no other channel replaces it
Reach to a defined audienceFacebook and InstagramTargeted reach at scale, and it builds awareness rather than shortlists
A considered business purchaseSearch, and your own pagesThe buyer is still deciding what they need, and that happens in reading rather than in a feed
A local service with a fixed priceBoth the lead platform and search, and measure which convertsDifferent buyer states, and the cost per enquiry differs more than people expect

The cost structure that decides it more often than the channel

On a lead platform you rent the demand and pay per lead, which means your cost per customer is set by somebody else and can be changed without your agreement. On search you buy the click and own the relationship, so the acquisition cost is yours to improve and the customer is yours to keep. For a business with repeat demand the arithmetic usually favours owning the channel by the third job. For one off low value work it usually does not.

So the real question is a lifetime value question wearing a channel costume. Work out what a customer is worth over a year. If it is more than three times the first job, build the owned channel. If it is roughly the first job, rent the demand and stop agonising.

The measured absence

On 22 October 2026 we put 33 batches of buying questions to ChatGPT and Gemini with Australia written into the text of each one, because the search interface we use accepts country, language and location parameters and ignores every one. The snapshot taken that evening holds 64 blind readings, 32 per engine, returning 1,010 distinct hosts.

hipages appears in none of those 1,010 hosts. Nor do Gumtree, Airtasker, Oneflare, Yellow Pages, True Local or Yelp. Seek does appear, in a handful of readings across au.seek.com, seek.com.au and two of its employer hosts, which fits: Seek was reached on the employment side of the question set rather than the supplier side.

Be precise about what that establishes and what it does not. These were marketing and supplier buying questions, so a consumer asking for three quotes on a bathroom was not among them and a lead platform was not really available to be found. What it does establish is narrower and still useful: when an Australian buyer asks an assistant a commercial question about who to buy from, the assistant does not reach for the lead platforms or the directories. It reached 66 distinct Australian government hosts 139 times across 25 readings, and a long tail of Australian specialist sites, localdigital.com.au in 9 readings, digitalnomadshq.com.au in 8, 3pdigital.com.au in 7.

What that means for a business that lives on a lead platform

If your entire presence is a hipages profile, you are invisible to the fastest growing way a buyer researches a purchase, and you cannot fix it inside the platform because the platform page is not the thing being read. The fix is a page you own that says what you do, who it is for and what it costs, specific enough that a machine can quote a sentence from it. That page is also the asset that survives a change in the platform's lead price.

Our page on what AI assistants actually cite across 597 readings is the wider version of this. Its headline is that 85.6 per cent of all citations recorded went to vendor or agency own sites, which is the strongest available argument for owning a page rather than renting a listing.

The free check a platform does not do for you

A platform badge is not verification. ASIC's Banned and Disqualified search is, and it is free: read on asic.gov.au on 22 October 2026, ASIC states that it keeps registers of people and organisations disqualified or banned from roles in corporations, financial services or the credit industry, that you can search 6 ASIC registers at once, and that it is a good idea to check people and organisations before you deal with them. Worth knowing in both directions, because your buyers can run it on you.

Questions about Australian platforms and search

Should a new trade business start on a lead platform

Usually yes for the first ninety days, because it answers the only question that matters at that stage, which is whether anybody wants the work at your price. Build the owned channel with the revenue it produces.

Does a hipages profile help my own site rank

Treat them as separate systems. The profile earns jobs inside the platform. It does not build the pages, the reviews on your own property or the publishing record that search and assistants read.

Is Facebook still worth it for an Australian business

For reach to a defined audience, yes. For being the name on a shortlist, it was barely present in these readings, so treat reach spending as awareness work and buy the shortlist separately. Our page on the three jobs sold as social media marketing in Australia separates those out with its own sources.

How much of my budget should sit on platform leads

As much as the margin tolerates and no more, because platform spend buys jobs and builds nothing you keep. Cap it and move the surplus into pages you own.

What is the one thing to do if I only sell through platforms today

Publish the pages describing your services on a domain you control, then take a dated reading of what the assistants say when somebody asks for your category in Australia. Our page on how to check repeatably whether a business appears in an AI answer gives a method you can run yourself.

The platform fee you can renegotiate and the one you cannot

A lead platform fee is a commercial term and it moves with volume, which means it can be argued about. The cost of being absent from the machine answer cannot, because there is nobody to argue with. Across 1,010 distinct hosts returned by 64 blind Australian readings on 22 October 2026, not one appearance came from hipages, Gumtree, Airtasker, Oneflare, Yellow Pages or True Local, while 66 distinct Australian government hosts appeared 139 times and the domain registry itself appeared in 4 readings. So a platform dependent Australian business is paying a negotiable fee for the jobs it can see and nothing at all for the channel it cannot. The fix is a page on a domain you control, said plainly enough that a machine can quote a sentence from it, which is also the asset that survives the next change to the platform lead price. AI Knows Us reads a fixed question list across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews and shows the sources behind each answer, so you can see which of your own jobs are being answered without you. Our own domain was not among those 1,010 hosts once.
