How a Canadian company sells to buyers in other countries, and what each extra market costs to be named in

The four things that genuinely duplicate per market, the two Canadian advantages worth using, and the arithmetic that sizes the bill before a plan name does.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026

A Canadian company expanding outward faces a specific and underestimated cost: each new market is a second evidence base, not a translation job. The market has to be named inside the question when you measure, and the sources an engine cites differ by country in a way that is measurable rather than theoretical. We ran the same 198 question bank for Canada and for the United States on the same day, 22 October 2026, and the two citation lists shared almost nothing at the top. Canada's leaned on federal government properties and Canadian city domains. The American one leaned on Google documentation, trade press, two agency directories and the regulator. Same bank, same engines, same day, two different source worlds.

The last two rows are the ones that matter to an expanding Canadian company. Canada named six local agencies 21 times and the United States named none, and the engine that named more rivals flipped between the two markets. A single blended international visibility score would have erased both findings.

What duplicates per market, and what does not

ItemDuplicates?Why
The question setYesThe market is named inside the question text, so each market is its own set
The source target listYesThe cited hosts differ by country, measurably
Price and currency statementsYesA page quoting the wrong market's price quotes a figure its reader cannot get
Claim and consent languageYesThe rules governing a testimonial or an unsubscribe differ by country
The underlying product explanationNoWhat the thing does is the same everywhere
Technical health of the siteNoOne site, one set of fixes
Your measurement methodNoSame method per market, which is what makes readings comparable

The two Canadian advantages worth using

  • Bilingual capability is a genuine export asset. A Canadian company that already writes French for a Quebec reader has a capability most competitors in other markets lack, and it travels to French speaking markets more credibly than a translation vendor does.
  • Canadian compliance habits are stricter than many markets require. A company that already runs CASL consent records, a Competition Act claim review and a provincial privacy posture arrives in most markets over prepared rather than under. That is a selling point in procurement, not just a cost.

The arithmetic that sizes the bill

Do it before you look at a plan, because vendors meter differently and two honest quotes for identical work can differ by an order of magnitude. Tracked buyer questions, times engines read, times refresh frequency, times markets, times language sets. Forty questions on five engines read weekly in one market is 800 recorded answers a month. The same forty across Canada, the United States and one European market, with French counted separately, is far more. Take your own number into the pricing conversation, ask which unit the price is per, a tracked question, an engine, a recorded answer or a domain, then recompute. Ask about the third market rather than the first.

Why the market lock has to live in the question

Data providers in this category accept gl, hl and location parameters on the request and then ignore all of them, so a run configured to look American or British through parameters returns answers that are not reliably from that market. The only lock that holds is naming the country, and often the city, inside the text of the question. Every figure above was taken that way, and a supplier claiming country specific readings without saying how the market was fixed is reporting something weaker than it appears. Ask to see one question as sent.

The order to add markets in

  • Establish Canada properly first, with a baseline you can re-read. A thin presence in four markets is worth less than a solid one at home.
  • Add the market where you already hold two referenceable customers, because the evidence base is partly built.
  • Do the multiplication before each addition and take the number into the pricing conversation.
  • Build the new market's source list from its own reading, never from the Canadian list.
  • Quote the right market's price on the right market's page, and never put two markets' prices in one sentence.

If the first export market is the United States, the trust checks an American buyer runs on a foreign supplier are set out in the four things a US buyer checks first. For the per market cost arithmetic in full, including the meter question, see why the unit count multiplies before the dollar figure does.

Questions Canadian exporters ask about being named abroad

Can one page serve Canada and another market?

A page explaining what something does can. A page quoting a price, a rule or a local source should not, because each is market specific and the wrong market's reader gets a figure they cannot act on.

Does translation handle a new market?

Translation handles language and not evidence. Our Canadian and American source lists shared almost nothing at the top, so a translated page can be correct and still cite the wrong country's sources.

How many markets can one Canadian team run?

As many as it can hold the question sets and source lists for. The practical limit is the source work rather than the reading.

Which market is cheapest to add?

The one where you already have references and where your existing published evidence is relevant. That is a question about your assets rather than the market's size.

How do I keep readings comparable across markets?

Same method, same question count, same engines, same frequency, per market, with the country named inside each question and separate denominators.

Reading several markets without averaging them

The failure mode in multi market work is one blended score, which on our own evidence would have hidden both that Canada named six local firms and the United States named none, and that the more rival naming engine flipped between the two. AI Knows Us reads ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews per market and per engine with the market named inside the question, states each denominator, and keeps the raw answer text. Outside the United States and the United Kingdom the Growth plan is 199 dollars a month with 100 buyer questions watched; in the United States and the United Kingdom it is 299 dollars. Both read on aiknowsus.com/pricing and aiknowsus.com/llms.txt on 22 October 2026, and the question count is the line to size against your market count.
