How a regional Australian business competes for visibility outside the capital cities, and the layer the plans skip

Four decisions for a business outside the capitals, with the state government sources the engines actually reached and what they imply.

A regional Australian business has one real advantage and one real disadvantage, and most marketing plans for them get both the wrong way round. The advantage is that the competitive set in your actual service area is small and the search volumes are cheap. The disadvantage is that the published material about your region is thin, so a machine assembling an answer about it has very little to work with. The first means you can win locally for less. The second means you have to supply the material yourself.

Four decisions follow from that, and one of them involves a layer of Australian sources almost nobody uses.

The four decisions

  1. Draw the service map before anything else. Which towns, which travel radius, which jobs you will not take because of distance. Write it down and publish it. A machine cannot infer a service area you have not stated, and an answer naming you for a town you do not serve costs somebody a wasted call.
  2. Decide whether you are regional or national. A business selling a service that travels and a business selling one that does not are two completely different programmes with different costs. Our page on buying national or local search work in a country this size works through which one you are actually purchasing.
  3. Publish the material about your region that nobody else has. Local conditions, local pricing realities, what makes a job here different from the same job in a capital. This is the thing your capital city competitors cannot write.
  4. Use the state layer. Which is the part most regional plans skip entirely, and it is below.

The state layer, measured

On 22 October 2026 we put 33 batches of buying questions to ChatGPT and Gemini with Australia written into the text of each one, because the search interface we use accepts a country parameter, a language parameter and a location parameter, returns HTTP 200 for each, and ignores all three. The snapshot taken that evening holds 64 blind readings, 32 per engine, returning 1,010 distinct hosts of which 435 carry an Australian domain.

Sixty six distinct Australian government hosts appeared 139 times across 25 of the 64 readings, and the state and territory layer inside that is the part worth a regional business's attention. business.qld.gov.au appeared in 5 readings, nsw.gov.au in 4, buy.nsw.gov.au in 4, service.nsw.gov.au in 3, business.vic.gov.au in 2, and single appearances came from Western Australian, South Australian, Tasmanian and Australian Capital Territory portals and from two local councils.

Alongside those, national hosts aimed at small business appeared heavily: business.gov.au in 15 readings, accc.gov.au in 13, acma.gov.au in 8, ato.gov.au in 3, and state and federal procurement material in several more.

What that means for a regional business specifically

Three things, and each is actionable this week.

Grants, programmes and registrations are part of being found. When the engines answer an Australian business question they reach for state business portals, which means the material a buyer sees around your category is often government material about support and obligations. A regional business that is visibly registered, visibly in the relevant state programmes and visibly compliant is a more coherent answer for a machine to assemble.

Procurement at the state level is a real channel. buy.nsw.gov.au appeared in 4 readings and the federal and Victorian equivalents appeared too. For a regional supplier, state government buying is often the largest local customer and it is a document job rather than a marketing job.

Your state is a publishable subject and your town may not be. There is enough demand and enough published context at state level to compete. At town level there is often neither, which is why a page per town usually produces near duplicates nobody searches for while a strong state and region page earns its keep.

What our data cannot tell you about your region

There is no regional Australian figure in this dataset and there is no city figure either. Our separate city scan of 15 and 16 October 2026 measured ten named cities directly, 6 buyer questions each, both engines, 120 readings, and no Australian city was among the ten. So for a regional Australian area, carry the country figure and say that is what it is. Extrapolating a place we did not measure is an error this programme has made once and corrected.

What does transfer from the city scan is a mechanism rather than a number. In all ten cities measured, the sources winning city questions were small, city specific domains rather than large companies. That predicts the same thing for a regional Australian town and tells you nothing about who holds it today, which is a question only a reading of your own area can answer.

The free check worth running either direction

A regional business often buys from fewer, less visible suppliers, so verification matters more. ASIC's Banned and Disqualified search is free and, read on asic.gov.au on 22 October 2026, ASIC states that it keeps registers of people and organisations disqualified or banned from roles in corporations, financial services or the credit industry, that you can search 6 ASIC registers at once, and that it is a good idea to check people and organisations before you deal with them. It also keeps a separate court enforceable undertakings register and states that people who give one will not always appear on the banned and disqualified registers.

Questions about marketing a regional Australian business

Is it worth targeting the whole country from a regional base

Only if the service genuinely travels. Otherwise you are buying clicks from people you cannot serve, which is the most common waste in regional Australian paid search.

Should I publish a page for every town I serve

Only where the page can say something true of that town and nothing else. Otherwise publish one strong service area page that names every town and the travel radius.

Do the engines know regional Australian towns

They answered at state level repeatedly in our reading and we have no town level measurement, so the honest answer is that it is testable and untested. Six questions naming your town, asked three times on each engine, gives you the answer in an afternoon.

Is a capital city agency worth hiring from a regional base

For execution often yes, for local judgement about your region no. Our page on buying search work where the volumes are small and the supplier is two hours away works through exactly that trade.

What is the cheapest first move

The service map, published. It costs an afternoon, it prevents wasted enquiries, and it gives every machine a statement of where you actually work.

Seven jurisdictions in the answer, and what that opens

The state layer is the regional opportunity and almost nobody publishes into it. Across 64 blind Australian readings on 22 October 2026, state and territory portals from Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory all appeared, along with two local councils, inside a total of 66 distinct government hosts appearing 139 times across 25 of the 64. business.qld.gov.au alone appeared in 5 readings and buy.nsw.gov.au in 4. So the material a buyer sees around a regional business question is frequently state material about support, obligations and procurement, and a regional supplier that is visibly inside those systems is a more coherent answer than a capital city firm with no state specificity. That is a filings and publishing job rather than a budget. What it does not tell you is how your own towns read, because there is no regional figure in this dataset and no Australian city in our separate ten city scan. AI Knows Us runs a fixed question list at whatever level you write the questions, across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, so a regional operator measures its own area rather than inheriting a national average.
