How a US moving company gets named by AI assistants, and the published price behind each recommendation

We asked using the British word for movers and ChatGPT answered about Chicago, FMCSA and USDOT numbers anyway. Of the five paid products in the two answers, one publishes a price.

The question we put to both engines on 21 October 2026 used the British word for the trade, removals, and ChatGPT answered about the United States anyway. It opened with the queries "What are the best moving companies in Chicago?" and "Who offers interstate moving from Illinois?", it cited fmcsa.dot.gov eight times, and it told the business to make its FMCSA registration and USDOT number easy to verify. That is worth recording on its own, because it means the engine resolved the market from context rather than from the wording of the question. Of the five paid products the two answers named between them, exactly one publishes a price on the page we read.

The question, the surfaces and the dates

"How does a removals company get named by AI assistants?" went to the ChatGPT product surface at 22:27 UTC and to Gemini at 22:42 UTC on 21 October 2026, through a data provider, with no company named. Both engines ran a live search. ChatGPT returned 72 citations, led by fmcsa.dot.gov with eight plus two more from ai.fmcsa.dot.gov, then help.openai.com with four, bing.com with four, business.google.com with four and developers.google.com with three, with consumer.ftc.gov appearing once. Gemini returned four, blckalpaca.at, boostability.com, lifto.ai and bexlow.com.

The Gemini answer also arrived with a block of product interface markup still in it, an ElicitationsGroup element offering two follow up prompts, which is the kind of artefact worth noting when you are reading a stored answer rather than a screen.

What each engine told a moving company to do

  • ChatGPT put the regulator at the centre, which no other vertical in our set produced. Alongside the usual profile and website work it told the mover to display verifiable pricing information, estimate policies, insurance and credentials, and for interstate moves to make the FMCSA registration and USDOT number easy to verify. It cited the FMCSA ten times across two hostnames to support that.
  • Then the free foundations. Google Business Profile claimed per genuine location with accurate service areas, indexable pages for each city or service area covering local moves, long distance moves, commercial relocations, packing and storage, then Bing Places and Bing Webmaster Tools, then Better Business Bureau, Yelp and moving industry directories, with an explicit instruction to prioritise reputable sources rather than bulk directory submissions.
  • Then measurement, free. Test the same local intent prompts monthly across ChatGPT, Google AI search and Copilot, record mentions, cited URLs, competitors and referral traffic, make sure OAI-SearchBot is allowed, and use Bing's AI Performance report.
  • Its buying advice was blunt. In its own words, do not hire an expensive generative engine optimisation agency first, implement the free basics, then hire a local SEO specialist with demonstrated moving industry results if needed. It also told the reader to measure actual recommendations rather than rely on an agency's proprietary AI visibility score.
  • Gemini ordered five steps and named four paid things. Google Business Profile free, then BrightLocal, then Schema App or the Merkle generator for MovingCompany and LocalBusiness JSON-LD, then Yext or Birdeye for reviews, then moving specific agencies.
  • Both engines independently asked for the same two assets. A complete company profile and structured, machine readable service and coverage data. Neither costs money.

Every price in the two answers, opened on 22 October 2026

  • BrightLocal, which Gemini said starts at 39 dollars a month. brightlocal.com/pricing publishes, for one location, Track at 41 dollars a month billed monthly or 369 billed annually, which the page shows as 31 a month, then Manage at 54 monthly or 485 annually and Grow at 65 monthly or 584 annually. The Track feature list opens with a Local AI Visibility Tracker, flagged new. The plan cards also print "Price on request" beside the published figure, so the page shows a price and a request for one in the same block.
  • Schema App, which Gemini priced at free to 100 dollars a month and up. schemaapp.com/pricing/ returned 200 and renders 2,159 words with no plan price in them. The only dollar figure is an overage line, 100 dollars per 100,000 external chatbot requests beyond an included 100,000 a month. The free half of that range refers to the Merkle generator at technicalseo.com, which is a different product from Schema App and genuinely free.
  • Yext or Birdeye, which Gemini priced together at around 300 to 400 dollars a year. Neither figure is on either page. yext.com/pricing, yext.com/pricing/ and yext.com/platform/pricing all returned HTTP 404 on 22 October 2026. birdeye.com/pricing/ returned 200 and renders 538 words with no dollar figure in them. A 404 and an empty pricing page record what each server did on that date and are not evidence about either vendor's real rate.
  • Mover Search Marketing, one of two moving specific agencies named. moversearchmarketing.com returned 200 and renders 3,044 words. There is no retainer figure in them. The dollar amounts on the page are the revenue bands on its enquiry form, up to 500,000, 500,000 to 1 million, 1 to 3 million and over 3 million, which is how it qualifies a lead rather than how it prices the work.
  • Bexlow, the other. bexlow.com returned 200 and renders 1,847 words with no dollar figure in them.
  • The one published figure for this kind of work came from neither answer's recommendation list. In a neighbouring reading in the same audit, Gemini cited datacram.com for a different trade, and that page, datacram.com/geo-industries/house-cleaning, read on 22 October 2026, states the supplier's own rate in plain words, a defined scope with no long contract from 625 dollars a month, with most local businesses between 625 and 2,250, set after a free audit. The same page links a moving industry article. The moving specific URL we then tried, datacram.com/geo-industries/moving-companies, returned HTTP 404, so the 625 figure belongs to the cleaning page we read it on and not to a moving page. We name it because it is the only monthly figure for AI search work we could verify on any supplier's own page in this neighbourhood.

The cheapest published path for a single city mover

  • Zero, and this is the part the regulator decides. Put the USDOT number and the FMCSA registration where a stranger can read them in text, state the insurance and valuation options, publish the estimate policy and whether it is binding, and separate local from interstate work. ChatGPT cited the FMCSA ten times for this question, which tells you what an answer about licensed movers is assembled from.
  • Zero. Google Business Profile per real location with accurate service areas, Bing Places claimed, Better Business Bureau and Yelp profiles accurate and matching, and indexable pages for local moves, long distance, commercial, packing and storage.
  • Zero. MovingCompany and LocalBusiness JSON-LD from the free Merkle generator at technicalseo.com, which both engines pointed at in one form or another.
  • Zero. Bing Webmaster Tools for the AI Performance report, plus your own monthly prompt test using the exact queries ChatGPT wrote out, best movers in your city, affordable long distance movers and licensed moving companies near me.
  • 31 to 41 dollars a month. BrightLocal Track for one location, 369 billed annually or 41 billed monthly, with the Local AI Visibility Tracker included. The only verified subscription figure in either answer.
  • 625 dollars a month. The cheapest published monthly figure for a supplier doing the AI search work for you that we could verify anywhere in this vertical, with most local businesses stated to sit between 625 and 2,250.
  • Unquoted. Schema App, Yext, Birdeye, Mover Search Marketing and Bexlow. Five of the six paid names in these answers are bought by asking, so a figure for any of them in an AI answer came from somewhere other than the vendor.

Why the regulator matters more than the software here

Movers are one of the few local trades where a federal register exists, is public, and is the thing a nervous customer is actually checking. The engine that read 72 pages spent ten of its citations on the FMCSA and one on the FTC's consumer guidance, and its instruction was to make the registration easy to verify. No tool in either answer does that for you. It is a line of text on your own site, repeated on your profile, matching the register.

That is also the reason this trade has an unusual amount to gain from honest publishing. A page that says plainly how a binding estimate differs from a non binding one, what the valuation options cost, and what happens if the truck is late, is answering the exact fear in the question. An answer about reliable movers is assembled out of whichever pages contain those sentences in text, and most moving company sites put them in a PDF or behind a quote form.

Where AI Knows Us sits, and where a rival is the better buy

We sell AI visibility measurement and not moving company marketing. We do not buy leads, run ad accounts, request reviews or manage profiles, and nothing here is a pitch for any of that. What we do is ask the household's own question, with your company name absent from the question, on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, and report which movers were named and which URLs the answer was built from. Our ladder, read from aiknowsus.com/llms.txt on 22 October 2026, is SEO Start at 149 dollars a month in the US and UK or 99 elsewhere, watching 0 questions on 0 engines, Growth at 299 in the US and UK or 199 elsewhere for 100 questions on all five surfaces weekly, and Scale at 599 and 399 for 300 questions. Growth is the cheapest plan of ours that reads all five surfaces.

Where a rival beats us, named, with the figure and both of its readings. A single city mover should start with BrightLocal rather than with us. Its Track plan covers one location at 41 dollars a month billed monthly or 369 billed annually, which the page shows as 31 a month, and it includes a Local AI Visibility Tracker. Against our Growth at 299 that is roughly a ninth of the cost for a business whose whole market is one metro, and the recommendation to start there is the right one. SE Ranking is better arithmetic one step up, publishing Core at 129 dollars a month billed monthly with 100 prompts tracked daily on seranking.com/subscription.html, read on 22 October 2026, against our 299 for 100 questions watched weekly. We did not verify which engines sit behind its prompt count, so read that line yourself. Profound publishes single sign on, SAML, SOC 2 compliance and up to nine answer engines on its enterprise tier, and a word boundary search of our own pricing page, 119,203 bytes read on 22 October 2026, returns zero hits for sso, saml, soc 2, iso, dpa and white label. Our page also disagrees with itself, rendering "Businesses covered 1 1 1 1 1 1 10 1" above "More than one business No" in all eight columns, which matters to a van line agent running several brands. Both readings render and we publish both.

What this page establishes. One question per engine on one night, one fetch per vendor URL on 22 October 2026, every figure attached to the page it was read on, and the only price that binds anybody is the one in a written quote.

What moving company owners ask about AI answers

Does the USDOT number really belong on the website

The engine that read 72 pages said so explicitly and cited the FMCSA ten times to support it. Put it in text, make it match the register, and repeat it on the profile. It is the cheapest credibility signal in this trade and the one a worried customer is checking.

Do I need software to be named

No, and the searching engine said in its own words not to hire a generative engine optimisation agency first. Profile, city and service pages, the regulator detail, the BBB and Yelp accuracy, then a monthly manual prompt test. Buy a tool when you want the test run for you.

Why did an answer give prices I cannot find

Because the figures did not come from the vendors. Of the six paid names across both answers, five publish no price on the pages we read, including both moving specific agencies. Open the page before you budget and note the date you read it.

Should I separate local and long distance pages

Yes, and both engines implied it. They are different regulatory regimes, different price structures and different customer fears, and an answer about interstate moving from your state can only be built from a page that says interstate and names the state.

What is the cheapest way to see whether this is working

Running the three prompts ChatGPT wrote out, monthly, with identical wording, recording which movers get named and which URLs get cited. That costs nothing. If you want it automated for one location, BrightLocal Track publishes 41 dollars a month billed monthly or 369 billed annually with an AI visibility tracker included, read on its pricing page on 22 October 2026.
