How a veterinary clinic gets named by AI assistants, and what the recommended stack really costs

Two engines, two shopping lists, and every price checked against the vendor page on 22 October 2026.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026

Asked how a veterinary clinic gets named by AI assistants, the two engines answered with two different shopping lists. ChatGPT put the free work first, Google Business Profile, species and condition pages, structured data, Bing Places and reviews, and named exactly one paid product in the whole answer. Gemini set out four paid steps naming eight products with prices against them, starting at 69 dollars a year for a schema plugin and ending at a 1,000 to 2,500 dollar monthly retainer. We then opened every vendor page. The cheapest published, verifiable monthly price for a vet specific stack in either answer is 99 dollars a month, and it belongs to a vendor one engine cited as a source and then did not recommend.

What was asked, and on what date

"How does a veterinary clinic get named by AI assistants", put to the ChatGPT and Gemini product surfaces through a data provider on 21 October 2026 at 22:23 and 22:39 UTC. Both ran a live search. ChatGPT returned 60 source citations, led by BrightLocal's help centre with seven and brightlocal.com with three, plus OpenAI's own help pages, developers.google.com, schema.org and visiblevet.com. Gemini returned four citations, all of them veterinary marketing suppliers: growdvm.com, arcanemarketing.com, propetmarketing.com and puppilot.co.

ProPet MarketingCited by Gemini as a source, named in neither recommendationNot recommended, so no figurepropetmarketing.com publishes the clearest rate card in either answer: plans from 99 dollars a month, Growth and Local SEO at 249, Local Authority at 499, with websites at 400, 975 and 1,250 dollars one time and ads management from 650 a month. Every plan is stated to include hosting, security, the Google Business Profile and a monthly report.

The cheapest published path, in order

Put only verified figures in sequence and a practice owner has a budget rather than a shopping list.

  • Free. Complete the Google Business Profile with the right primary category, services, hours, appointment link and photos. Claim Bing Places. Write the species and condition pages, the urgent care page, the after hours arrangement and a clear statement of whether you are accepting new patients. Add VeterinaryCare or LocalBusiness structured data. Ask every bonded client for a review and reply to all of them.
  • 41 dollars a month, or 369 a year. Local tracking with an AI visibility tracker included, published by BrightLocal for a single location on the pricing page we read. For one clinic watching one town, this is the cheapest published way to see whether any of the free work moved.
  • 99 to 499 dollars a month. A vet specific supplier doing the listing and local SEO work for you, published by ProPet Marketing at three tiers, with one time website builds separate.
  • 650 dollars a month and up. Paid ads management on top, published by the same supplier, which is the first point at which media spend enters the arithmetic.
  • 1,000 to 2,500 dollars a month. The full service vet GEO retainer, as estimated by one engine. No vendor in the set published that figure on its own site on 22 October 2026, so treat it as the market's shape and ask for a written quote.

The free tier is where the species pages live, and they are the thing an assistant can actually quote: the exotics list, the large animal visit, the senior cat protocol, the practice that does same day dentals. Our longer piece on the species page nobody else writes, and the corporate group and online pharmacy that compete for the same search is the companion to this one, and marketing for veterinary practices covers the emergency call and the bonded client in full.

Two things in the citation set a clinic should know

First, one of the sources ChatGPT used twice for this answer, visiblevet.com, no longer serves a veterinary visibility site. On 22 October 2026 it redirects to lesli.com, titled "Lesli Rose, Get Recommended by Google and AI". The advice may be fine and the brand behind it has changed, which is worth knowing if you are about to buy from a name you found inside an AI answer.

Second, one of the four suppliers Gemini cited, arcanemarketing.com, returned HTTP 403 to our request for its veterinary page that day. A 403 records what the server did on that date.

The wider pattern in the citations is the useful part. The most cited domain in ChatGPT's answer was a measurement tool's help centre, not a veterinary site, and the second group was the engine makers' own documentation. The pages that decide what an assistant says about local businesses are documentation and directories, so a clinic competing for that answer is competing on structured, consistent facts rather than on prose.

What one engine said about buying this, in its own words

ChatGPT closed its answer with a sentence worth printing out: AI visibility is an outcome to measure, not a product you can buy outright. It also set the order plainly, implement the free changes, then consider a specialist, and ask that specialist for a measured baseline, a defined scope and results across several assistants.

That is the right standard and it is the one we hold ourselves to. AI Knows Us sells the measurement, not the local marketing: we ask the pet owner questions a client would ask, with your practice name absent from the question, on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, and report which clinics get named and which sources produced the answer. We write no reviews, run no ad accounts and manage nobody's Google profile.

Our rates, from aiknowsus.com/llms.txt read 22 October 2026: SEO Start 149 dollars a month in the US watches 0 buyer questions on 0 engines, Growth 299 watches 100 questions on all five engines weekly, Scale 599 watches 300. Growth is the cheapest plan that reads all five surfaces. Where a rival is stronger, by name and with the figure: BrightLocal publishes its entry tier at 41 dollars a month for one location, 369 dollars billed annually, with a Local AI Visibility Tracker included, which is a fraction of our cheapest plan that watches engines, and for a single location clinic watching local searches that is the right place to start. Profound publishes SSO and SAML with SOC 2 compliance and up to nine answer engines on its enterprise tier at tryprofound.com/pricing, read the same day, where our own pricing page, 119,203 bytes, renders no SSO, no SAML, no SOC 2, no ISO and no data processing agreement. A corporate group buying for several hospitals should also know that our pricing page contradicts itself on multi business coverage, showing "businesses covered 1 1 1 1 1 1 10 1" while the row beneath reads "more than one business, no" in every column. Both render.

What this reading establishes. One question per engine on one night, which fixes what each engine said then. Every price above is attached to the URL it was read on, on 22 October 2026, and the one to act on is the one in a written quote.

What vets ask about getting named in AI answers

Do I need an agency to be named by ChatGPT or Gemini

No, and one of the two engines said so first. The free work, a complete Google Business Profile, species and condition pages, structured data, Bing Places and genuine reviews, is the whole of the first step. Buy a supplier when you have run out of time, not when you have run out of ideas.

What is the cheapest way to see whether it is working

Two ways, and they answer different questions. BrightLocal publishes local tracking with an AI visibility tracker from 41 dollars a month for one location, or 369 a year, read 22 October 2026. Asking the questions yourself costs nothing: run the same location prompts on each assistant monthly, such as the best vet for a senior cat in your town, and record which clinics appear and which URLs are cited.

What does veterinary marketing cost a month

From pages we verified on 22 October 2026: 99 dollars a month for a basic web presence plan, 249 for growth and local SEO, 499 for local authority, 650 and up for ads management, with websites at 400 to 1,250 dollars one time. Full service vet GEO retainers were estimated by one engine at 1,000 to 2,500 a month and no vendor published that figure.

Does structured data really change what an assistant says

Both engines named it independently, and both named the same types, VeterinaryCare and LocalBusiness. It is the machine readable version of your hours, services, emergency arrangements and locations, which is exactly what an assistant has to assemble to answer a pet owner. Write it once and keep it current.

How often should a practice check its AI answers

Monthly is enough for a single location, which is the cadence one engine recommended too. Keep the same prompt wording each time so the comparison means something, and record the cited sources as well as the clinic names, because the sources are the pages you can go and fix.
