How much a new Singapore company should put behind marketing in year one, and the order to spend it in
A spending order rather than a budget figure, with the one published Singapore cost to allow for and what 64 blind readings say about the cheapest win available here.

The honest answer to a year one budget question is that the order you spend in decides the outcome far more than the total does. A new Singapore company can waste S$120,000 in twelve months and can also build a working pipeline for a fraction of that, and the difference is almost never the size of the number. It is whether the money went to the things that compound before the things that stop the moment you stop paying.
So this page sets out a spending order for a company's first twelve months in Singapore, with the one published Singapore cost worth allowing for, and the evidence for which item at the top of that order is currently cheapest to win.
The order, and why it is this order
- The thing you sell, written down so somebody else can quote it. One page per service, with the price position, the geography served and the buyer it is for. This costs writing time and nothing else, and every later pound of spend is wasted without it.
- The Business Profile and the proof around it. Address, category, hours, phone, and reviews that name the service rather than the company. In a city this dense a buyer's nearest alternative is a few streets away, so the profile is the shelf.
- A dated reading of what assistants and search engines currently say about your category. This is the cheapest item on the list and the only one that tells you whether the next three are necessary.
- Search demand you can actually convert. Paid search first, because it returns an answer inside a fortnight and tells you which terms are worth the organic work.
- Content against the questions buyers asked in step four. Not a content calendar. The specific questions that produced enquiries.
- Everything else. Social, display, events, sponsorship. These are reach purchases and they belong after you know what converts.
The published Singapore cost most first year budgets forget
If anything you sell involves a claim, a comparison or a promotion, allow for pre clearance on the risky piece. The Advertising Standards Authority of Singapore publishes its advertising advice fees, read on asas.org.sg on 22 October 2026: a normal service inside 20 working days at S$600 for a member of AAMS, AMOS or DMAS and S$1,200 for a non member, and an express service inside 10 working days at S$700 and S$1,400 respectively. With GST those are S$654, S$1,308, S$763 and S$1,526. Review starts when payment is received, and the clock runs from the day of payment rather than the day of submission.
One S$1,526 express review in a year one budget is cheap insurance on a launch campaign, and ASAS says itself that it is not intended to be a clearing house for all advertising, so this is a line for the one piece that could cost you, not a standing monthly cost.
The cheapest win on that list, measured
On 22 October 2026 we ran a blind audit for Singapore on ChatGPT and Gemini. 64 usable blind readings, 32 on ChatGPT and 32 on Gemini, with Singapore written into every question because the search API we use accepts country, language and location parameters and ignores all three.
In 26 of those 64 readings the engines named no business at all. They answered in generalities. In another 38 they named somebody, and the names repeated. First Page in 17 readings, MediaOne in 12, Impossible Marketing in 11, OOm in 10, Clickr in 2.
For a company in its first year that 26 is the most useful figure on this page. Two in five times a Singapore buyer asks a direct supplier question, the answer contains no supplier, and in the other three the answer usually names a local agency. There is no incumbent to displace in those answers, only an empty space that the first concrete, checkable page on the subject can fill. That is a cheaper fight than the paid auction and a much cheaper fight than trying to displace a firm that has been named in 17 readings out of 64.
What a year one budget should not contain
- A twelve month retainer signed in month one. Buy a fixed scope audit, read it, then decide. Our page on what a retainer should contain as deliverables and hours is a useful checklist to hold a first proposal against.
- A rebrand. Before there is demand, a brand refresh is a cost with no measurable return and it delays everything behind it.
- Tooling you have no data for. A S$500 a month analytics stack on 40 sessions a week is a subscription, not an investment.
- Directory listings bought as a visibility strategy. Across 597 readings in our earlier three market audit, review directories accounted for 0.8 per cent of all citations. They are a presence item, not a channel.
Questions a new Singapore company asks about its first year of marketing
Should the first hire be in house or an agency
A single in house person who owns the brief and buys execution usually beats either extreme. A founder with no marketing owner buys the wrong things from good agencies.
How long before any of this shows
Paid search answers inside two weeks. Local search and reviews move in weeks. Content and the way assistants describe you move over months, and the thing to hold them to is impressions and position in Search Console rather than revenue in month two.
Is Singapore demand big enough to build on
Domestic volumes are small and expensive, which is why many Singapore companies build their search programme across several South East Asian markets at once. Our guide to running one programme across several markets from Singapore covers the market list decision that has to come first.
What should be in month one specifically
Service pages, the Business Profile, analytics and Search Console properly installed and verified, and one dated baseline reading of what search and assistants currently say. Everything else can start in month two with better information.
How much of the budget should be flexible
Keep a quarter of it unallocated. The first three months will surface one channel that works better than you expected, and a fully committed budget cannot follow it.
The baseline that makes the rest of the year readable
A first year marketing budget is mostly a series of bets, and the only thing that turns a bet into a decision is a reading taken before the money went out. For search that is Search Console. For paid it is cost per enquiry. For the answers assistants give about your category it is a fixed list of your buyers' questions, asked on a schedule and recorded with dates. AI Knows Us does that last one across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, and its free scan needs no account, so a Singapore company in month one can have the baseline before it has a budget. The 26 unanswered readings above are the reason it is worth having early rather than late.
