How much an Australian business should put behind marketing in year one, and the free search that goes before the first invoice

A spending order rather than a budget figure, the free supplier check to run first, and the measured reason one item belongs ahead of the media money.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026

The order you spend in decides the outcome far more than the total does. An Australian business can waste $120,000 in twelve months and can also build a working pipeline for a fraction of it, and the difference is rarely the size of the number. It is whether the money went to the things that compound before the things that stop the moment you stop paying.

So this page sets out a spending order for a first twelve months in Australia, the free verification step to run before any supplier gets paid, and the evidence for which item at the top of that order is currently cheapest to win.

The order, and why it is this order

  1. What you sell, written so somebody else could quote it. One page per service, with the price position, the geography served and the buyer it is for. This costs writing time and every later dollar is wasted without it.
  2. The Business Profile and the proof around it. Address, category, hours, phone, and reviews that name the service rather than the company.
  3. A dated reading of what search and AI assistants currently say about your category. The cheapest item on the list and the only one that tells you whether the next three are necessary.
  4. Search demand you can convert. Paid search first, because it answers inside a fortnight and tells you which terms are worth the organic work.
  5. Content against the questions that produced enquiries in step four. Not a calendar. The specific questions real buyers asked.
  6. Everything else. Social, display, sponsorship, events. Reach purchases, and they belong after you know what converts.

The free check that belongs before any payment

Before you pay an agency, a contractor or a consultant, check the people. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission runs a free search for this and says why in its own words, read on asic.gov.au on 22 October 2026: it keeps registers of people and organisations that are disqualified or banned from roles in corporations, financial services or the credit industry, and it advises that it is a good idea to check people and organisations before you deal with them.

In ASIC's description you can search 6 ASIC registers at once using its Banned and Disqualified search, covering people and organisations not allowed to be a company director, audit self managed superannuation funds, or work in the Australian financial services or credit industry. ASIC also keeps a separate court enforceable undertakings register, and states that people who give one will not always appear on the banned and disqualified registers, so a thorough check is both searches. It costs nothing and takes ten minutes, which makes it the best value line in any first year plan.

The cheapest win on the spending list, measured

On 22 October 2026 we put 33 batches of buying questions to ChatGPT and Gemini with Australia written into the text of each one, because the search interface we use accepts country, language and location parameters and ignores all three. The snapshot taken that evening holds 64 blind readings, 32 per engine.

In 28 of those 64 readings the engines named no business at all. They answered in generalities. In the other 36 they named somebody, and the names repeated: Online Marketing Gurus in 12 readings, Rocket Agency in 8, StudioHawk in 8, Prosperity Media in 8, Sparro in 3, King Kong in 3.

For a business in its first year that 28 is the most useful figure here. More than two in five times an Australian buyer asks a direct supplier question, the answer contains no supplier, and in the rest the answer usually names a local agency. There is no incumbent to displace in those answers, only an empty space the first concrete, checkable page on the subject can fill. That is a cheaper fight than the paid auction and much cheaper than displacing a firm named in 12 of 64 readings.

What a first year Australian budget should not contain

  • A twelve month retainer signed in month one. Buy a fixed scope audit, read it, then decide. Our page on what is inside Australian packages and how to compare two quotes is the checklist to hold a first proposal against.
  • A rebrand. Before there is demand, a brand refresh is a cost with no measurable return that delays everything behind it.
  • Tooling with no data in it. A $500 a month analytics stack on 40 sessions a week is a subscription, not an investment.
  • Directory listings bought as a visibility strategy. Across 597 readings in our earlier three market audit, review directories were 0.8 per cent of all citations recorded. Take the free tier, skip the upgrade.

The Australian specifics to allow for

Two. GST on every quoted figure, stated both ways, because a budget approved exclusive and invoiced inclusive produces a monthly argument. And geography, because Australia is large enough that a national programme and a city programme are genuinely different purchases with different costs. Our page on buying national or local search work in a country this size works through which of the two you are actually buying.

Questions a new Australian business asks about year one marketing

Should the first hire be in house or an agency

One in house person who owns the brief and buys execution usually beats either extreme. A founder with no marketing owner buys the wrong things from good agencies.

How long before any of this shows

Paid search answers in a fortnight. Local search and reviews move in weeks. Content and the way assistants describe you move over months, and the early measure is impressions and position in Search Console rather than revenue.

What should month one contain specifically

Service pages, the Business Profile, analytics and Search Console installed and verified, the ASIC check on any supplier, and one dated baseline reading. Everything else starts in month two with better information.

How much of the budget should stay unallocated

About a quarter. The first three months will surface one channel that works better than expected, and a fully committed budget cannot follow it.

Is a national campaign viable in year one

Rarely. Pick the state or the city where you can service demand, win it, and expand from a position that already converts.

The three free searches that belong in month one

Before any supplier is paid, run the checks that cost nothing and that only exist in this country. ASIC's Banned and Disqualified search covers six registers at once. Its separate court enforceable undertakings register catches people who, in ASIC's own words, will not always appear on the banned and disqualified registers. And the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations keeps a list whose people, again in ASIC's words, will not appear when you use its search. All three were read on asic.gov.au on 22 October 2026 and all three are free, which makes them the highest return activity in a first year plan because the downside they protect against is the entire budget. Then take the reading that no register holds. In 28 of 64 blind Australian readings taken the same day, two assistants named no business at all when a buyer asked who to hire, and in the other 36 they named six firms. For a company in year one the empty 28 are the cheap ground. AI Knows Us tells you which of your own questions sit there, across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, and the first reading asks for no account.
