How Perplexity decides what it names, and the access it asks for in writing

When a Singapore buyer asked two assistants how to get recommended by Perplexity, zero of the twenty hosts behind the answer carried a Singapore domain, which tells you where the work is and is not local.

Getting named by Perplexity starts with two permissions and one published fact about each of them. Perplexity's own crawler documentation, read on docs.perplexity.ai on 27 October 2026, names two agents. PerplexityBot surfaces and links websites in Perplexity's search results, and the page states it is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models. Perplexity-User handles user initiated actions, visiting a page because somebody asked a question and linking to that page in the response, and the page states it is not used for general web crawling or for collecting training data. The documentation recommends allowing PerplexityBot in robots.txt and permitting requests from its published IP ranges, notes that each setting works independently, and says changes can take up to 24 hours to take effect. Everything else about appearing in a Perplexity answer sits on top of those permissions.

The Singapore finding, which is an absence

On 26 October 2026 we ran 64 blind pipelines across 32 batches on ChatGPT and Gemini with Singapore locked. One batch asked how to get recommended by Perplexity and the surrounding surfaces. The answer drew on 20 hosts and not one of them carried a Singapore domain. For comparison, the batch about Singapore procurement drew on 20 hosts of which 14 were Singapore domains, and the batch about the Singapore agency landscape drew 12 of 20.

That contrast is the most useful thing on this page. A question about a global product is answered from global sources. A question about buying in Singapore is answered from Singapore sources. So the Perplexity side of this work is not a local discipline, and a supplier charging a Singapore premium for the mechanics of it is charging for something with no local content. What is local is the material the engine finds when it looks for a supplier in your category here, and that is a separate job.

Where Perplexity differs from ChatGPT in a way that changes the work

Both vendors publish their agents, and the division of labour is not identical. The table below is taken from each vendor's own documentation, read on 27 October 2026.

Two consequences for a Singapore site. First, if your website sits behind a bot management or content delivery product, the decision that matters may be made at the edge rather than in your robots file, and both vendors point at IP ranges for exactly that reason. Check the edge. Second, a live user initiated fetch can reach a page that a crawler was never allowed to index, which means a buyer asking about you in real time may get a different answer from the one a monitoring tool reports. Hold both readings rather than choosing one.

What actually gets a Singapore company named, once access is settled

Perplexity answers with sources attached, so the question becomes which sources carry your category. In our audit, across the 26 batches that produced buyer questions, the engines cited 508 host entries resolving to 321 distinct hosts, and 94 of those hosts carried a Singapore domain. The practical programme follows from that list rather than from a blog schedule.

  1. Publish the facts that an answer needs to name you. Legal entity name, UEN, address, phone, hours, service area, the services you sell and a price or a price basis. Identical wherever they appear. An engine that cannot reconcile two versions of your address tends to name neither.
  2. Get onto the hosts your own reading shows. Ask the buying question, write down the hosts behind the answer, and work that list. In Singapore it is usually a short set of third party lists and sector sites, and several of them publish their own terms for inclusion.
  3. Make one page per buying question. A page that answers the exact question in its first paragraph is the kind of page an answer engine quotes, because it can lift a sentence that already stands alone.
  4. Re read monthly and compare source lists. The host set moves before the naming does, so the host set is the early indicator worth watching.

How big is this surface in Singapore, honestly

Worth sizing before you fund it. StatCounter's Singapore search engine figures for September 2026, read on 27 October 2026, list Google at 92.16 per cent, Bing at 4.53 per cent, DuckDuckGo at 1.08 per cent, Yahoo at 0.97 per cent, Yandex at 0.77 per cent and Baidu at 0.19 per cent. Perplexity does not appear in that list at all, because it is measured as an assistant rather than as a search engine in that dataset. So the honest position for a Singapore business is that Perplexity is a high intent, low volume surface today, and the work that earns a Perplexity citation is largely the same work that earns a citation elsewhere. Fund it as one programme with several readings, and judge Perplexity on the quality of the enquiries it sends rather than on their number.

If you want a Perplexity specific reading rather than a blended one, our comparison of tools that track Perplexity mentions sets out what each vendor can actually see on that surface, including which ones sell it as an add on rather than including it. AI Knows Us reads Perplexity alongside ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews and shows the sources behind each answer, and aiknowsus.com will take that reading without a sign up step, which is the part you can check in a minute. Where a specialist beats us is depth on a single surface, so if Perplexity is the only engine you care about, buy the one that instruments it most closely rather than the one that covers the most ground.

The three mistakes we see on Singapore sites

  • Blocking everything to protect content. A blanket disallow on all AI agents removes the search surface along with the training surface. The two vendors document them separately for a reason, so decide separately.
  • Fixing robots and ignoring the edge. A bot protection rule added during a security review will quietly undo the robots change, and nothing in the robots file will tell you.
  • Buying content before a baseline. Without a recorded reading, there is nothing to compare the second reading to, and the first thing a supplier will show you in month three is a reading with no before.

Questions Singapore businesses ask about being named by Perplexity

Do I need to do anything different for Singapore

Not for the access work, which is identical everywhere. The local part is the material the engine finds about suppliers in your category here, which is why zero of the twenty hosts in the Perplexity batch were Singapore domains while fourteen of twenty were in the Singapore procurement batch.

Can I pay Perplexity to be recommended

Treat any offer of that kind with suspicion and ask for the published programme behind it. The work that reliably changes an answer is publication and access, and those are things you can verify yourself.

Will allowing the crawler slow my site down

Permitting a documented agent with published IP ranges is a normal crawl load. If a crawler is causing a problem, the answer is rate limiting at the edge rather than a blanket block, so you keep the search surface.

How do I know whether Perplexity has read my page

Your server logs hold the answer, matched on the agent names in the vendor documentation. That is the first party record, and it is more reliable than any report about whether a page is indexed.

Is a citation from Perplexity worth anything commercially

It arrives with a link and with a person who has already read a summarised answer, so the enquiry tends to be further along than a cold click. Measure it as its own channel rather than inside a general organic figure, and our guide to tracking AI assistant referrals in analytics sets out the setup.

The twenty hosts that were not Singaporean

The thing worth taking from this page is the empty column. When a Singapore buyer asked how to get recommended by Perplexity, two engines answered with twenty sources and none of them was a Singapore site. Nobody here has published the Singapore answer to this question, which means the mechanics will be read from vendor documentation for as long as that stays true. Read the documentation yourself, fix the access this week, and spend the budget on the part that is genuinely local.
