How to check a UAE marketing agency before you pay it anything
Seven checks that cost nothing, in the order that eliminates the most candidates fastest, and the one that takes five minutes and ends shortlists.

You can learn most of what matters about a UAE marketing agency before money changes hands, and none of it requires a meeting. Work through these seven checks in order. The first three are documents a real supplier sends the same day, the next three are public, and the last one is the one almost nobody runs.
Check one, the trade licence and its activity list
Ask for the licence. It will be either a mainland licence or one from a free zone, and it will list the activities the entity is permitted to carry out. Read that list against what you are about to buy. A supplier whose licence does not cover the service is a supplier with a problem that becomes yours when the invoice arrives. Note the issuing authority too, because that tells you which registry to look at next.
What a good response looks like: the document, by return, with no explanation needed. What a bad one looks like: a brochure, a delay, or a brand name that turns out to be a trading name for an entity with a different licence.
Check two, the entity behind the brand
Brand names and licensed entities often differ, which is normal. What matters is that you know which legal entity will sign, which one will invoice, and whether they are the same. Ask for both names in writing. If the invoicing entity sits outside the UAE while the pitch came from inside it, that is not disqualifying, and it does change the contract, the currency and the law that governs it.
Check three, one case with a number, a period and a referee
Not a logo wall and not a deck. One client, one number, the period it covers, and the name of somebody at that client who will take a call. Every agency with real work has at least one client who will allow a redacted version. Five working days is a fair deadline and the ones that miss it have told you something useful for free.
Check four, their own public footprint, read as evidence
Open the agency's own site and ask three questions. Does it publish anything specific enough to be wrong, such as a price band, a method or a named outcome? Is anything on it dated? Does it name the people who do the work? A firm selling you visibility that publishes nothing checkable about itself is the most common pattern in this market and the easiest one to spot.
Check five, who they actually employ, in public
Look up the named delivery people from the proposal. You are not looking for impressive profiles, you are checking that the people exist, that they work there now, and that the skills match the work. This catches the gap between the pitch team and the delivery team before you sign rather than in month three.
Check six, the complaint trail, read carefully
Search the agency name with the words refund, notice, dispute and contract. Read whatever comes up as a lead rather than a verdict: one unhappy former client is an ordinary cost of doing business, a pattern is a finding, and an absence proves nothing either way. Do the same search in Arabic if the firm trades in both languages.
Check seven, ask the engines the question your buyer would ask
This is the five minute check that ends shortlists, and it costs nothing. Ask ChatGPT and Gemini your own buying question, with the United Arab Emirates named inside the question, and see whether this agency appears, what it is described as, and which sources the answer leans on. Then ask about the agency by name.
Two things to know before you interpret the result, both measured in our own UAE reading of 22 October 2026, which took 60 blind readings across both engines with the market fixed inside the prompt text.
- Absence is normal here. 34 of the 60 readings named no supplier at all. An agency missing from an answer is in the majority, so treat presence as a bonus rather than absence as a fault.
- Gemini usually shows you nothing to audit. ChatGPT carried 2,729 of the 2,812 citation URLs in that set; Gemini carried 83, and 9 of its 28 UAE readings carried no citation at all. So run the check on both and read the sources from the one that gives them.
One agency in our set had real unprompted presence across both engines, appearing in five readings where no question named any firm. That is a measurement of share of answer rather than of quality, and it is exactly the kind of thing you can now check for yourself in five minutes for any name on your list.
The three things these checks cannot tell you
They cannot tell you whether the work will be good, whether the chemistry will hold, or whether the firm will still have your account team in six months. For those, the only real protection is a short first term, a named number the engagement is judged on, and a notice period you can live with. Buy a quarter, not a year, until you have seen two monthly reports.
What UAE buyers ask before paying a marketing agency
Is it reasonable to ask for a licence before a first meeting? Yes, and asking early saves everyone time. It is a routine request here and a legitimate supplier treats it as such.
Should we pay a deposit? A first month in advance is normal. A large upfront payment for a long term before any work has been delivered is a pricing structure that transfers all the risk to you, and it is negotiable.
What if the agency is new and has no cases? Then buy a small scoped piece of work with a defined output rather than a retainer. New firms can be excellent value and they should be bought differently.
How do we check a freelancer rather than an agency? The same seven checks with one change: for check five, ask who covers the work when they are unavailable, and write the answer into the contract.
Do these checks apply to an overseas supplier? Checks three to seven do, unchanged. Replace checks one and two with the equivalent registration in their own country, and settle the invoice currency and governing law in the contract.
The reading to take while you are checking them
While you have the engines open on the agency, take the same reading on yourself. Record which businesses are named for your five main buying questions and which sources the answers cite, and keep the file. It is the only baseline that cannot be reconstructed later, and it is what turns month six of an engagement into a before and after rather than an argument. AI Knows Us keeps that record monthly across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, reporting answers that cited your pages separately from answers that named your business. For a UAE buyer the plan that reads all five engines is 199 dollars a month, the price outside the United States and the United Kingdom, read from aiknowsus.com on 22 October 2026.
