In three of four American cities a domain with the city in its name reached the top, and in one it did not
localseo.nyc, chicagoseoagency.co and houdigitalmarketing.com each took 3 citations of 12 readings, while the most cited source in Los Angeles was a national suite's listing subdomain at 4.

Across the four American cities in our scan, taken on 15 and 16 October 2026 with six buyer questions each on ChatGPT and Gemini, the pattern is real and it is not universal. localseo.nyc took 3 citations of New York's 12 readings. chicagoseoagency.co took 3 of Chicago's 12. houdigitalmarketing.com took 3 of Houston's 12. In Los Angeles the most cited source was agencies.semrush.com at 4 of 12, a national software company's agency listing subdomain, and no city named domain appeared in that city's top three.
So three cities out of four show the pattern and the fourth shows the opposite. Both halves have to be reported, because a page claiming that local always beats national would be contradicted by one of its own four rows.
The four cities, with the qualification each one needs
| City | Readings | Top cited sources and counts | Where the city named domain stood |
|---|---|---|---|
| New York | 12, 9 with sources | localseo.nyc 3, thenycseo.com 3, goodfirms.co 3 | Two of the three carry the city in the domain, level at the top |
| Los Angeles | 12, 11 with sources | agencies.semrush.com 4, brightlocal.com 3, help.brightlocal.com 3 | Absent from the top three |
| Chicago | 12, 12 with sources | agencies.semrush.com 3, chicagoseoagency.co 3, paramdigitalmarketing.com 3 | Level with a national listing subdomain at the top |
| Houston | 12, 11 with sources | houdigitalmarketing.com 3, thedigitalelevator.com 2, axios.com 2 | Highest in the city |
Houston is the only one of the four where a city named domain is ahead on its own. New York and Chicago are ties. Los Angeles is a loss for the pattern. That is a weaker and more useful finding than the version a headline would prefer.
What the pattern does and does not reward
The thing the three city named domains have is not a clever hostname. It is that the domain and the pages behind it are about one place, which makes them a close match to a question that names that place. A hostname on its own cannot do that, and nothing in these readings tests a hostname separately from the pages it serves.
- The match is between the question and the page, not the question and the name. A page about one city, with that city's prices, districts and conditions in it, is the asset. The domain is a label on it.
- A national listing page can match the same question. That is what the Los Angeles row shows, and it is what a directory style page is built to do: one page per place per category.
- Nothing here is entrenched. In three of the four cities the leading sources are level with each other, which leaves nobody holding a position that would have to be taken off them.
- The counts are small and are described as small. Three citations of twelve readings is a reading about how a city answer was assembled, not a ranking of firms in that city.
What this says to a business in one of those cities
Publish the page about your city and put the specifics in it. Not a location page with the city name swapped into a template, but the things that are only true there: what the work costs locally, which districts or counties behave differently, what a buyer in that market is actually choosing between. Our own readings of these four cities produced top sources at 3 and 4 citations of 12, which is a field nobody has settled.
If you sell in Houston, the shape of the city itself changes the brief before anything else does, which is the argument in why six hundred square miles makes this a location problem first.
Where these four readings stop
Twelve readings per city, six questions, two apps, two dates. The three further surfaces our product covers were asked nothing. These four cities have figures and no other American city does, so there is no number here for Dallas, Miami, Seattle or anywhere else. No per industry rate exists in the scan, because the six questions were buyer questions in our own category. And every count records a domain appearing in a source list rather than a business named in the answer text.
We sell the measurement and the local pages that follow it, so the row that goes against us is published too: in each of these four cities our own domain was cited zero times. The Google Search Console side of our own record, two domains with their windows and the single export date, is our proof page.
Questions about local and national domains in city answers
Which city named domains were cited?
localseo.nyc at 3 of New York's 12 readings, chicagoseoagency.co at 3 of Chicago's 12 and houdigitalmarketing.com at 3 of Houston's 12. New York also returned thenycseo.com at 3.
Did a national brand ever lead a city?
Yes. In Los Angeles the most cited source was a national software company's agency listing subdomain at 4 citations of 12, and the same subdomain was level at the top of Chicago at 3.
Does putting a city in my domain help?
Nothing in these readings tests a hostname on its own. What the cited pages share is being about one place in detail, and that is the part available to any domain.
How strong are these leads?
Weak and that is the finding. Three of the four cities produced ties at 3 citations, so no source is entrenched in any of them.
Which engines and dates?
ChatGPT and Gemini, on 15 and 16 October 2026. Our wider category reading sits at 597 readings across ChatGPT and Gemini in three markets.
What a tie at three citations is worth planning around
A field where the top sources sit level at 3 citations of 12 readings is a field where one more page changes the picture. That is the practical meaning of the table above, and it is a different proposition from entering a market where one source holds most of the readings.
It also sets the right expectation for a report. On a city reading this size the thing to record is whether you appear at all and in how many of the twelve, because there is no stable order to climb. A monthly report that tracks position in a four way tie will show movement every month and none of it will be caused by anything you did.
Report the city that broke the pattern
Three cities agreeing and one disagreeing is the whole result, and the fourth row is the one that tells you what the first three are worth. Anybody can find three agreeing readings and publish them as a rule. The row that argues the other way is what lets a reader judge how far to trust the other three, and it costs one line to include.
