Is marketing talent hard to find in Australia right now, and the one skill with no credential behind it
Which roles to recruit, which to contract and which to train, with the measured reason one of the three has no credential to hire against.
Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026
The shortage is not general and treating it as general is what makes hiring expensive. Generalist marketing managers are available in Australia. What is genuinely scarce is the combination of somebody who can write well about a technical or regulated subject, somebody who reads data without needing it pre packaged, and somebody who understands how machine answers are assembled. Three narrow things, and the right move for most Australian companies is to hire the first, contract the third and train the second.
We have not run an Australian salary or vacancy survey, so this page prints no pay figure. What it gives is a build, buy or train decision per skill, and a measurable reason the third skill has nothing to hire against.
The decision, skill by skill
| Skill | Availability in Australia | Hire, contract or train |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing management and coordination | Reasonable | Hire. This role owns the brief and buys everything else |
| Writing well about a technical or regulated subject | Scarce, and the hardest to fake in an interview | Hire if you can, contract a specialist writer if you cannot |
| Paid media execution | Available, with wide quality variance | Contract initially, hire once the spend justifies a full time person |
| Reading data without a dashboard built for you | Scarce as a habit rather than as a qualification | Train. A two week skill for a numerate person |
| Understanding how AI answers are assembled | Very scarce, with almost no credential available | Contract the measurement, train the judgement |
| Australian regulatory judgement on claims | Available here and not purchasable abroad | Hire or retain locally. This is the premium worth paying |
Why the fifth skill is scarce, and it is measurable
There is no certification, no standard and no public benchmark, so there is nothing to hire against. The clearest evidence sits in our own Australian audit. On 22 October 2026 we put 33 batches of buying questions to ChatGPT and Gemini with Australia written into the text of each one, because the search interface we use accepts country, language and location parameters and ignores all three. The snapshot holds 64 blind readings, 32 per engine.
When an Australian buyer asked which tool to use for this work, the engines answered Semrush in 14 readings, Ahrefs in 12 and HubSpot in 11, then Otterly in 7, Peec in 4, BrightLocal in 3, Profound in 2, and Scrunch, SE Ranking and Rankscale in 1 each. The top three are two search suites and a CRM, none of which was built to read an AI answer. A candidate who learned this category from what the engines recommend has learned the wrong tool set, and that is the practical hiring problem.
How to interview for the scarce skills without a credential
- For the writer. Give them a 300 word brief on something genuinely technical in your sector and 40 minutes. Read it for whether they asked a question first. The ones who do not ask produce fluent copy that is wrong.
- For the data habit. Hand them a Search Console export and ask what they would do next. The answer you want names a specific page and a specific query rather than describing a dashboard.
- For the machine answers skill. Ask how they would find out whether an assistant names your company. A candidate with the skill describes a fixed question list, a count and two dates. One without it describes optimising content for AI.
- For regulatory judgement. Show them a real claim from your own marketing and ask what they would change, and which Australian rule makes them nervous. A specific answer names a regulator.
What to train rather than recruit
Two things, both weeks rather than months for the right person. Reading Search Console and ad platform data directly without an intermediary dashboard, because the habit is missing rather than the ability. And running a repeatable reading of what assistants say about your category, which is a procedure rather than an expertise: a fixed question list, the market written into each question, the same engines every time, and the date recorded. Our page on running a repeatable check on whether a business appears in an AI answer works as a training document.
What the Australian market adds to the hiring question
Two things worth planning for. The regulatory frame is heavier here than most marketers expect: in our 64 readings, 66 distinct Australian government hosts appeared 139 times across 25 of them, with the consumer regulator in 13 and the communications authority in 8. A marketer who cannot name the rules around your category is working without the frame the engines are already applying. And geography means the service area judgement is a real skill, because a national campaign from a regional base and a city campaign are different jobs and somebody has to know which one you are running.
Questions about marketing hiring in Australia
Is it cheaper to use an agency than to hire
For execution breadth, usually. For the person who owns the brief, no, because an agency cannot decide what your company should buy. Hire the owner and contract the execution.
Should a first marketing hire be senior or junior
Mid level with ownership instincts beats both. A junior needs direction you do not have time to give, and a senior hire with no team often does coordination you could have bought.
Can one person cover search, paid, social and AI answers
One person can own all four and execute two. Deciding which two is the real job specification, and it depends on which channel currently produces your enquiries.
How do I check a candidate's claimed history
References, and for anything involving company roles, ASIC's free Banned and Disqualified search, which covers six registers at once and which ASIC itself advises using before you deal with people or organisations. Also its separate court enforceable undertakings register, because ASIC states that people who give one will not always appear on the banned and disqualified registers.
What is the cheapest capability to add this quarter
The reading habit, because it is a procedure and it changes what every other hire is pointed at. Our guide to reading a mention rate without inventing an industry benchmark covers interpreting the result.
What you can verify about a hire, and what you cannot
Australia gives an employer an unusual amount of free verification and none of it covers the skill that is actually scarce. For anything involving company roles, ASIC's own page read on 22 October 2026 says you can search 6 ASIC registers at once, that it is a good idea to check people and organisations before you deal with them, and that its separate court enforceable undertakings register holds people who will not always appear on the banned and disqualified lists. That settles a candidate's standing as a director and tells you nothing about whether they can read a machine answer, because no register, certification or standard exists for that. So the interview has to produce the evidence: ask a candidate how they would find out whether an assistant names your company, and listen for a fixed question list, a count and two dates rather than a description of optimising content for AI. The scarcity is real and it is measurable in what the engines themselves recommend, which in our 64 Australian readings was two search suites and a CRM at the top of the list. AI Knows Us supplies the measurement across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews so the judgement can sit with your own hire rather than waiting for a profession to form around it.
