Keyword monitoring tools compared, and how watching a list differs from researching one
Research tools find phrases you had not thought of. Monitoring tools watch a list you have already decided on. They are priced differently, they fail differently, and most people buy the wrong one of the two.

Two products get searched for with almost the same words and they are not the same purchase. A keyword research tool expands a seed into phrases you had not considered and sizes them. A keyword monitoring tool takes a list you have already settled on and watches it, so that you find out when something changes. Research is a project. Monitoring is a subscription, and the bill is set by how many phrases you watch multiplied by how often.
The criterion on this page: does the tool's own page publish the unit the bill is set in? In monitoring, the unit is the product, because keywords multiplied by frequency is what you are buying.
The two purchases side by side
| Research | Monitoring | |
|---|---|---|
| The question | What should we go after? | Did anything change on what we already chose? |
| How long you need it | A concentrated week or month | Continuously, or it is not monitoring |
| The unit of the bill | Rows or lookups | Keywords multiplied by checks per keyword |
| Published examples read 21 October 2026 | Moz publishes a keyword index above 1.25 billion on its free tools page. Majestic publishes 5,000 Site Explorer rows per search on its Lite account. | Semrush publishes 500 keywords tracked daily on its entry SEO tier. Rank Math publishes twelve months of position history on Pro, and 50,000 keywords on its agency tier. |
| What breaks | You run out of ideas, which is fine | You stop reading it, and then the subscription is a receipt rather than a process |
The arithmetic that decides what you can afford
Monitoring plans are two numbers wearing one price: how many phrases, and how often each is checked. Two hundred keywords checked daily is six thousand readings a month. The same two hundred checked weekly is about eight hundred. If a vendor publishes only the keyword count and not the cadence, you cannot work out what you are buying, and that is a fair reason to pick a vendor that publishes both.
The same arithmetic is why daily checking is usually the wrong default. Daily readings of a position that moves for reasons outside your control produce charts people learn to ignore.
The free monitoring nobody sets up
Search Console gives you average position and impressions for every query Google recorded, free, for any property you can verify, with no keyword limit at all because it reports what happened rather than what you asked about. It is slower and less precise than a tracker and it is first party. For most small sites it is the whole answer, and the paid tracker is for the day somebody else needs the chart.
One caution from this category's own history: products in it do close. A rank monitoring service called RankTracer shut down years ago and its goodbye note is still the most useful thing written about buying one, which is that a monitoring product is only as durable as the company behind it. Export your history.
The one check none of these tools runs, and who sells it
Every tool on this page measures a search engine. None of them measures the other place your buyer now asks, which is an assistant: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews compose an answer for each asker, naming some businesses and not others, and there is no index a crawler can read to find out whose name came up. A buyer question is not a keyword and an assistant answer has no position, so a keyword monitor cannot watch it even in principle.
AI Knows Us sells that one measurement and nothing else. We are not an SEO tool and we are not in the ranking above, because a buyer who came here for a crawler or a keyword index should buy one of the tools named above instead. What we do is ask your buyer question in all five apps on a schedule and record which businesses were named. Our own figures, from the rendered text of our llms.txt read on 21 October 2026: one credit is one buyer question on one app once, most checks cost one credit and a Claude check costs three because Claude costs more to run. The published US floor is $149 a month for SEO Start, and that same file says SEO Start watches 0 buyer questions on 0 engines, so it is a demand harvest rather than an engine watch. The first tier that watches the five engines is Growth at $299 with 100 buyer questions and 1,200 scheduled answers a month. A managed option is published in rupees only, Rs 88,499 to Rs 2,35,999 a month at a three month minimum, so we are not going to convert it for you.
Where the tools on this page beat us, plainly. Ahrefs Brand Radar, read on 21 October 2026, tracks prompts on ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude. AI Mode and Copilot are two surfaces we do not read at all, and its page publishes an overage price of $0.020 per check and the cost of a Claude update at 8 checks, which is a level of unit disclosure worth holding every vendor to, us included. Semrush, whose SEO and AI search pricing page we read the same day, sells AI visibility inside the suite you may already be paying for, with 50 prompts tracked daily and 300 AI visibility reports a day on its Starter tier. Moz now publishes AI Explorer, described on moz.com as showing what the top AI agents say about your brand. If you already pay one of those three, their module is the cheaper route and you should take it. We are the single purpose option for somebody who does not want a suite.
Choosing between the two
No competitor price table is reproduced on this page. What is quoted instead is the published limit that sets a tier, because a limit is the vendor's own statement of what you get and it does not move with the country you are reading from. That matters more than it sounds: on 21 October 2026 a fetch of one vendor's US pricing page from this machine returned Indian rupee prices, because the request left from an Indian address. A 200 response can still be the wrong page.
If you cannot name twenty phrases you would act on, you need research and a month of it. If you can, you need monitoring, weekly, on those twenty, and you should spend the saving on the pages rather than the dashboard.
On products in this category that stopped existing and what that should teach a buyer: RankTracer closed, and the sentence it left behind. On 21 October 2026 we read every link we could see on this site, 2,169 page bodies in all, against 2,082 live pages, and 935 of them, 44.9 percent, had no inbound link from any of those bodies. That figure is an upper bound rather than a count. No other page on this site links to the one above.
Questions about keyword monitoring
Is keyword monitoring the same as rank tracking?
Mostly yes, with one addition: good monitoring also watches whether the page that ranks is still the page you meant, which changes more often than people expect.
How many keywords should I monitor?
The ones you would change something about. For most businesses that is between ten and fifty.
Can Search Console replace a monitoring tool?
For a single site with one reader, usually yes. It cannot do daily readings, client reporting or competitor positions.
What happens to my history if I cancel?
Assume it goes. Export the rows quarterly, because position history is the one thing in this category that cannot be recreated later.
Why does my tool disagree with what I see in my own browser?
Because your browser knows who you are and where you are. A clean reading comes from outside your session, which is exactly what you are paying the tool for.
