Marketing agency in India: nine different trades sell under one phrase, so buy the right one
What each kind of Indian marketing agency actually does, how to read your own situation into a category, what the fee looks like, and the four questions that sort a shop in half an hour.

A marketing agency in India is not one kind of business. The phrase covers at least nine separate trades that happen to sell under the same two words: brand and creative work, media buying, digital performance, search and content, social and influencer, public relations, activation and events, design and production, and plain marketing consulting. Each has a different skill at its centre and a different fee shape. So the first decision is not which agency to hire. It is which of these nine you are trying to buy.
The mismatch is the most common way an Indian marketing budget goes on the wrong thing. A manufacturer who needs a catalogue, a website and three trade show panels signs a social media retainer. A direct to consumer brand that needs paid media managed daily appoints a creative shop that bills by the campaign. Both sides behave honourably and the engagement still disappoints, because nobody named the trade.
Nine labels, and the work each one actually sells
| What they call themselves | What sits at the centre of the business | Usual fee shape |
|---|---|---|
| Brand or creative agency | Positioning, naming, identity, campaign ideas, films and key visuals | Project fee, or a creative retainer |
| Media agency or buying house | Planning and buying print, television, radio and outdoor | Commission on billing, or a planning fee |
| Digital performance or growth agency | Paid search and paid social against a cost per lead target | Monthly fee, or a share of media spend |
| Search and content agency | Technical site work, pages that answer buying questions, links | Monthly retainer |
| Social and influencer agency | Channel calendars, short video, creator sourcing and contracting | Monthly retainer plus creator cost |
| Public relations and communications firm | Journalist relationships, founder profiling, crisis handling | Monthly retainer |
| Activation, events and BTL agency | Launches, dealer meets, sampling, mall activity, trade fairs | Per event, with a service percentage |
| Design or production studio | Making the thing: packaging, catalogues, sites, photography | Per deliverable |
| Marketing consultant or fractional head | Deciding what to do and supervising whoever does it | Monthly or day rate |
A shop that calls itself full service is claiming several rows at once. Some genuinely hold three or four in house. Many hold one and place the rest outside, which is a normal way to run a small business and only becomes a problem when the buyer does not know it is happening and is paying a margin on work they could have bought directly.
Start from the job, not from the label
Read your own situation in this list and the category usually names itself.
- Nobody knows who we are and the category is crowded. Brand and creative first, then media. Buying performance before you have anything to say produces expensive clicks that leave again.
- We get enquiries but not enough of them, and we know what converts. Digital performance. Judge them on cost per qualified enquiry, not on impressions.
- Buyers search for what we sell and find competitors. Search and content, a slow purchase that compounds.
- We sell through dealers and distributors. Trade and channel work, which sits with activation and BTL shops, not a digital agency.
- We are raising money or entering a new market. Public relations, with a named list of publications and a clear view of what coverage does.
- We have the plan and no hands. A studio, on named deliverables.
- We have hands and no plan. A consultant for a quarter, far cheaper than a year of the wrong retainer.
How the fee is quoted here, and what the invoice should carry
Treat the bands below as my working read of the Indian market rather than a price list. They are useful for spotting an outlier, and for little else.
- Solo consultant or senior freelancer: roughly INR 18,000 to 45,000 a month, or a day rate.
- Small studio of three to ten people: roughly INR 45,000 to 1,30,000 a month, or per deliverable.
- Mid sized independent agency: roughly INR 1,25,000 to 5,00,000 a month.
- Large independent or a network office: starting around INR 5,00,000 a month and often a multiple of that.
- Projects: an identity exercise commonly lands between INR 75,000 and 6,00,000, a website between INR 60,000 and 5,00,000, and a brand film from INR 3,00,000 to many times that once you are buying a director and talent.
Agency services carry GST at 18 percent, so every number above is before tax. There is also a deduction at source when you pay a professional fee or an advertising bill, and the right one depends on how the agency is constituted and on what you are buying, so settle it with your accountant and not with the agency. Hold two billing rules firmly: media spend is a line separate from the agency fee, and third party costs such as creator payments, printing or venue hire pass through at actuals with the bill attached.
The money question has its own deeper pages. For retainer and commission structures in the above the line world, see what an advertising agency in India charges. For the online side, what digital marketing costs in India takes the same question apart by supplier type.
Telling the trade from the first meeting
Four questions sort almost any shop inside half an hour.
- Who does the work, by name and seat? Ask which of them is on your account every week. A senior partner in the pitch and a trainee on the file is the oldest mismatch in this business.
- Show me two things you made for a company our size. Not the showreel for the largest client. The useful comparison is a budget like yours.
- Which of these do you place outside? A straight answer here is a good sign. Subcontracting is ordinary; concealing it is not.
- What will exist at the end of ninety days? A good answer lists artefacts and numbers. A soft answer about building the brand is a drafting problem that becomes a billing problem.
The six lines worth settling before the first invoice
- Scope written as deliverables with volumes, not as adjectives.
- Logins: Google Ads, Meta Business Manager, analytics, domain and hosting stay in accounts you own, with the agency invited in.
- Intellectual property in finished work assigned to you on payment, with source files handed over.
- Exit notice of thirty days, and a list of what transfers on exit.
- Approval rounds included, and the rate for extra rounds.
- Reporting cadence, and the two numbers that define success.
Which kind of marketing agency in India, and other questions worth settling
Is a full service marketing agency in India better value than hiring two specialists?
It is better value when you have nobody internally to coordinate suppliers, because you are buying the coordination as much as the work. Two specialists produce stronger output per rupee when you have a marketing manager who can brief them both. Ask which of the nine trades the full service shop holds in house, then decide.
Do I need a marketing company in Delhi or Mumbai, or will a smaller city do?
Creative, search and performance work travels perfectly well over a video call, and rates outside the big metros are usually lower for comparable craft. Buy locally when the work needs feet on the ground: a shoot, an activation, dealer events, or media buying in one language market.
What is a sensible first commitment with an Indian marketing agency?
Ninety days, with named outputs and a review date in the agreement. That is long enough for search and content to show movement and for a performance account to be rebuilt properly, and short enough that a poor fit costs you one quarter instead of one year.
How do marketing firms in India price a brand identity project?
By the number of applications, not by the logo. A mark with a type system, a colour palette, two packaging formats and a stationery set is a different quantum of work from a mark and a one page guide. Get the deliverable list before you compare quotes, because that list is where the price difference sits.
Should I pay an Indian agency a share of my media spend?
It suits large budgets and the media buying trade, where volume earns better rates. At small spends it rewards raising the budget rather than lowering the cost per enquiry. Below a few lakh a month, a flat fee with a cost per acquisition target is cleaner.
Can one Indian marketing agency handle several languages?
Some can, and the test is whether the copy is written in the language or translated into it. Ask to see a piece originally written in Tamil, Bengali or Marathi by somebody on their team. Translated advertising reads like translated advertising.
The classification that happens before anybody calls you
The sorting job this page just did, nine trades hiding behind one phrase, is increasingly done by software before a buyer speaks to anybody. Somebody types that they export handicrafts from Jaipur, or run a clinic chain, and asks what sort of marketing help the business needs. ChatGPT or Gemini replies with a category, a budget direction and a few firms that fit it. That reply decides which trade gets considered at all, and it draws on what the web currently says about each trade and each firm rather than on anything either side controls in the moment. For an Indian agency the consequence is concrete: being filed under the wrong trade costs as much as being left out. AI Knows Us was built for that job, putting the questions buyers ask to the assistants and showing how a firm is being classified.
