Marketing agency names compared, and the resolution test that four of them failed outright

Most naming advice is about sounding good. The constraint that actually costs money is whether a machine asked for your name can tell you apart from the others wearing it.

Naming advice usually sounds like this: make it short, make it memorable, check the domain. All true and all insufficient, because the expensive failure in agency naming is not a name that sounds weak. It is a name that cannot be resolved. If three unrelated firms in three cities share your name, the search for it returns a mess, the recommendation for it lands on somebody else, and every piece of reputation you build leaks to a competitor who did nothing to earn it.

Here is the evidence for that, from this site's own work. While building out the United States marketing keyword territory, four search rows had to be refused outright because the pooled phrasings could not be resolved to one identifiable business. One of them was Spark marketing agency, a real monthly search volume attached to a name worn by multiple unrelated firms, with nothing in the query to indicate which. We could not write a useful page about it, and the reason is exactly the reason a buyer cannot find the right one.

That is what an unresolvable name costs. Not elegance. Discoverability, and it compounds every year.

The five kinds of agency name, and what each one costs you

The founder surname. Wieden and Kennedy is the obvious case, and read at wk.com on 21 October 2026 it leads with "An independent creative network" and ten offices. A surname pair is distinctive, impossible to confuse, and signals independence and accountability. The cost is succession: a firm named after two people has to keep meaning something after they leave.

The descriptive compound. WebFX is in this family, and read at webfx.com/about on 21 October 2026 it publishes "750 EXPERTS ON STAFF" and a copyright line of "WebFX 1995-2026". A short descriptive name tells a buyer what you do in one glance and ages into a category word. The cost is that it limits you: a name with web in it becomes a constraint the day you want the brand positioning work.

The abstract word. Spark, Ignite, Momentum, Catalyst, Elevate. Energetic and all of them taken, several times over, often in your own country. This is the family that produces the unresolvable name, and it is the most popular family in the category by a wide margin.

The invented word. Harder to love and far easier to own. Unique in search, available as a domain, and it has no meaning until you give it one, which is a marketing cost paid up front instead of a discoverability cost paid forever.

The initials. Clean at scale and hopeless at the start, because two or three letters collide with everything. Firms earn their way to initials; they do not launch with them.

The resolution test, which costs nothing and almost nobody runs

Before you commit, run your shortlist through this, in this order.

Search the bare name. Not the name plus your city. The bare name, the way a referral says it. If the first page is three different companies, a buyer given your name over coffee will reach one of the other two.

Search the name plus marketing agency. This is the phrase people actually type, and it is what the search data for this page is made of. If the results are a jumble of unrelated firms, you are joining a jumble.

Ask an assistant who it is. Type the candidate name plus marketing agency into ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews and read what comes back. A name that produces a confident description of a different company is a name that will hand your referrals away, and this failure mode did not exist five years ago. It is the single most useful new test in naming and it takes four minutes.

Check the register and the mark, not just the domain. Domain availability is the weakest signal of the four. A free domain and an existing trademark in your class is the expensive version of this mistake. Search the United States Patent and Trademark Office database for your class before you fall in love.

Say it on a phone. Spell it to somebody once and ask them to type it. Any name that needs spelling twice will be mistyped for as long as the firm exists.

Where AI Knows Us fits, which is narrower than it looks

The third test above is the only part of this a tool is needed for, and it is what we make. We watch what the five assistants say when a given question is asked, across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, and report which business each answer names. At naming stage the useful version of that is a one off reading of five candidate names, which tells you which of them an assistant already attributes to somebody else.

What we do not do is anything else on this page. We are not a naming consultancy, we do not run trademark searches, and we have no opinion on whether your shortlist sounds good. Our published limits are at aiknowsus.com/pricing, read 23 October 2026: Growth at 299 dollars a month covers 100 buyer questions and 1,200 scheduled answers across all five surfaces, Scale at 599 dollars covers 300, and a Claude check costs three credits where most cost one. SEO Start at 149 dollars renders zero buyer questions, zero credits and zero engines, so it is a demand harvest tier rather than the one that reads answers. For a naming decision, a single month on the smallest plan that reads all five surfaces is the whole of the purchase, and nobody needs a subscription to make one naming decision.

This page ranks nobody first and recommends no naming firm. Naming consultancies publish no fees, no process detail and no comparable facts, so an ordering of them would be an ordering of impressions. The tests above are free and you can run all five yourself in an afternoon.

What founders ask when naming a marketing agency

Should I use my own name. It is the most resolvable choice available and the hardest to sell later. If you intend to build a firm that outlasts you, treat the surname as a deliberate trade rather than a default.

Is a clever name worth it. A pun or an in joke is a cost paid at every explanation. Judge a candidate by whether it survives being said flatly in a procurement meeting, because that is the room where it has to work.

How much does the domain matter. Less than the resolution tests above. An exact match domain with a contested name is worth less than a slightly awkward domain with a name nobody else has.

Can I change the name later. Yes, and it costs more than founders expect, because a rename resets the search history, the citations and anything an assistant has learned about you. Two firms read while researching this site's pages had renamed in the past year and older recommendations still pointed at the old names.

Does the name affect whether we get recommended. An unresolvable name makes it harder for anything, person or machine, to attribute your work to you. That is the mechanism, and it is the reason the resolution test belongs beside the trademark search rather than after the logo.

For a worked example of what happens to a firm whose own site gives a machine almost nothing to read, our page on the checks to run on an agency whose site renders twelve characters of text covers the opposite failure to this one. No other page on this site links to that one, measured on 21 October 2026 across 2,411 stored bodies against 2,325 live pages, with my own wave excluded. 965 of those 2,325 pages, 41.5 percent, have no inbound link from anywhere on the site, and that figure is an upper bound, because a body we cannot read cannot be counted as a linker.
