Moving company digital marketing: the USDOT number in every ad, reviews that answer the fear, and ads paced to the season

The channels a mover should build in order, the FMCSA rules that make a website an advertisement, and how a carrier stands apart from lead sellers and brokers.

Digital marketing for a moving company is the system that turns a person planning a move into a booked job: a Google profile and website that rank where they live, reviews that answer "can I trust these people with my things", paid ads in the busy months, and follow up that wins the quote. For an interstate household goods mover in the United States it also has a legal layer that most marketing plans ignore. Federal rules define a website or online listing as an advertisement, and every advertisement has to carry your registered name and your USDOT number in a set form. Get that right first, because in a trade full of fear about rogue movers, it is also your strongest selling point.

Why moving is marketed differently

Three things make this trade unusual. Customers buy rarely, so there is little repeat business and a lot depends on referrals and reviews. Demand is seasonal, with busy summer months and a spike around the end of each month. And the buyer is anxious: they are handing everything they own to strangers, and many have read warnings about rogue movers. Good moving company marketing answers that anxiety at every step, from the first ad to the quote.

Another feature of the market shapes your plan: much of the online demand is captured by lead sellers and brokers who resell enquiries. Your marketing has to show clearly that you are the company with the trucks and the crew.

The channels, in the order to build them

The order matters. Ads and SEO send people to the website, so a site that fails the trust test wastes everything above it. The federal advertising rules for interstate movers

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's household goods rules, 49 CFR Part 375 (eCFR text current to 13 October 2026), apply when you move household goods for individual shippers across state lines. Four points shape your digital marketing.

  • Your website counts as an advertisement. Section 375.103 defines an advertisement as any communication to the public about an offer or sale of interstate household goods moving, and it expressly includes listings of your name, address and phone number in an online database or on a website.
  • Every ad carries your name and USDOT number. Section 375.207 requires truthful, straightforward and honest advertisements, and requires you and your agents to include your name or trade name as it appears on the FMCSA document assigning your USDOT number, plus the number itself. The number must appear in exactly this form: "U.S. DOT No." followed by the number.
  • Your website can carry the required consumer booklets. Section 375.213 says that when you give a written estimate you must also provide "Ready to Move?" and "Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move", either as copies or as a hyperlink on your website to the FMCSA pages that hold them.
  • Complaints need a phone line and a written procedure. Section 375.209 requires a telephone number, a written record of complaints and inquiries, and a written description of your procedure for customers.

Put the name and number in your site header or footer on every page, on the quote page, in your Google profile description where it fits the guidelines, in ad text where space allows, and on social profiles. Link the two FMCSA booklets from the quote page. A customer who is nervous about rogue movers sees every one of those as a reason to trust you. Part 375 covers interstate moves only, so check your state's rules for local work.

Brokers, lead sellers and how to stand apart

A household goods broker arranges a move but does not carry it out. Under 49 CFR 371.107, a broker must show its physical location, its USDOT and MC numbers, and its status as a broker that will not transport the goods itself, in its advertisements and on its website. If you buy leads from such companies, expect the customer to have heard from several movers. If you are the carrier, say so plainly on your site: your own trucks, your own crew, your own address. It is the clearest difference between you and most of the paid listings above you.

Reviews: the trust signal that decides the quote

Moving customers read reviews closely, especially the bad ones and your replies. Ask every customer for a review within a few days of delivery, by text or email with a direct link. The FTC rule on consumer reviews, 16 CFR Part 465, applies: no incentives for reviews that express a particular sentiment (465.4), no undisclosed reviews from owners or managers (465.5), and no legal threats or intimidation to get a review removed (465.7). Reply to complaints with facts and an offer to resolve, which shows the next reader how you behave when something goes wrong. Our guide on replying to Google reviews covers what Google will remove.

Paid ads and Local Services Ads

Google's Local Services Ads list "Moving services" among their categories (Google help answer 6224841, read 21 October 2026), with availability depending on your area. These ads sit above ordinary results and charge per lead. Ordinary search ads give more control over routes, schedule and budget. Either way, raise spend in the busy months and lower it when the crew calendar is full, and judge the account on booked moves, not leads.

Follow up, referrals and social

Most quotes are lost to slow follow up. Reply to every quote request the same day, send the estimate quickly, and follow up once or twice by phone or email. After the move, a short email asking for a review and offering a referral thank you keeps you in mind for the customer's friends. Build referral partnerships with people who meet movers often, such as real estate agents, apartment managers and senior living communities. On social media, post real crews, real trucks and careful packing. It helps people recognise you, and recognition matters in a trade built on trust.

Questions about moving company digital marketing

Does my moving company website need my USDOT number?

If you move household goods across state lines for individual customers, yes. Under 49 CFR 375.103 and 375.207 your website is an advertisement and must show your registered name and your number in the form "U.S. DOT No." plus the number.

What should a moving company spend on digital marketing first?

A clear, compliant website with a short quote form, a complete Google profile and a steady flow of reviews. Paid ads come after, because they send people to those three.

Are lead generation services worth it for movers?

They can fill gaps, but the same lead is often sold to several movers. Track the booking rate of bought leads against your own enquiries and spend where the cost per booked move is lower.

What should a moving company digital marketing agency handle?

Website, profile, reviews, search and paid ads, with reporting on booked moves by service. Ask whether they know the 375.207 advertising rule before they write a single ad.

How do moving companies get more reviews?

Ask every customer within a few days of delivery, make it one tap, and reply to every review. Never pay for positive reviews.

What an assistant says when someone asks for a mover

People planning a long distance move now ask ChatGPT or Gemini to suggest reliable moving companies from their city. The answer names a few firms, drawn from reviews, directories, news and company websites, and the customer often starts there. A mover with a clear registered name, a visible USDOT number and consistent listings gives that answer accurate material. Checking whether those assistants name your company, and who they name instead, is a different measurement from rankings, and it is what AI Knows Us tracks.
