SEO and digital marketing in Switzerland: four languages, the UWG mass advertising rule and the revised data protection act
How a Swiss company, or one selling into Switzerland, should buy SEO and digital marketing, built on the Unfair Competition Act and the Federal Act on Data Protection read on Fedlex, Federal Statistical Office language data and StatCounter figures, on 22 October 2026.

SEO in Switzerland is Google SEO in up to four languages, under Swiss law rather than EU law: marketing email and SMS follow Article 3 paragraph 1 letter o of the Unfair Competition Act (UWG, in English the UCA), online shops must show who they are under letter s of the same article, and personal data falls under the revised Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP, in German nDSG). Before you compare agencies, decide which language regions you sell to, and ask each agency how it handles those three rules. Keep Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, your analytics and your ad accounts in your own company's name.
The Swiss search market in numbers
StatCounter's figures for September 2026 put Google at 80.19% of searches in Switzerland, Bing at 12.11%, Yahoo at 2.56%, Yandex at 1.87%, DuckDuckGo at 1.73% and Ecosia at 1.26%. A Bing share above 12% is high for Europe, so register your site in Bing Webmaster Tools as well as Google Search Console and check how it appears in both.
For social media, StatCounter's referral figures for the same month show Facebook sending 62.31% of social visits to websites in Switzerland, X (Twitter) 16.69%, Instagram 7.54%, Pinterest 5.17% and YouTube 3.86%. These count clicks to websites, not time spent in the apps, but they show where social traffic actually comes from.
Four national languages, so choose your markets first
The Federal Statistical Office tracks German, French, Italian and Romansh as the national main languages, and reports that the share of people who name a non-national language, such as English, as one of their main languages has risen sharply. For marketing, that means three practical decisions:
- Which regions you sell to. A Basel or Bern firm usually starts in German. A Geneva or Lausanne firm starts in French. A business selling across the country needs both, and often Italian for Ticino.
- Swiss copy, not imported copy. Swiss German writing uses "ss" where Germany uses the sharp s, and Swiss buyers notice prices and terms written for Germany or France. Write each version for Swiss readers.
- One URL per language. Google says it uses the visible content of a page to decide its language and does not use code-level information such as the lang attribute. Keep one language per page, and connect the versions with hreflang annotations such as de-CH and fr-CH.
Our guide to SEO for international sites, URL structure and hreflang explains how to set this up without splitting your authority.
Email, SMS and calls under the Swiss UWG
We read the English translation of the Unfair Competition Act on Fedlex, status as of 1 January 2025. Fedlex notes that English is not an official language of the Confederation and that the translation has no legal force, so use it to understand the rules and check the German, French or Italian text for anything you rely on.
Mass advertising. Letter o makes it unfair to send mass advertising by telecommunication, without a direct connection to content the customer requested, unless you obtain the customer's prior consent, show the correct sender and give a simple, free way to refuse. There is one exception: a business that received a customer's contact details when selling goods, works or services, and told the customer then how to refuse, may send that customer mass advertising for its own similar goods or services without consent.
Phone marketing. Letter u makes it unfair to ignore a note in the telephone directory that a customer does not want advertising from businesses they have no relationship with, and treats customers with no directory entry the same way. Letter v bars advertising calls that do not show a telephone number entered in the directory that the caller may use.
Online shops. Letter s requires anyone offering goods, works or services online to give clear and complete details of their identity and contact address, including an email address, to show the technical steps to a contract, to let customers correct input errors before ordering, and to confirm each order online straight away.
Climate claims. Letter x makes it unfair to make claims about the climate impact of a business or its products that cannot be backed by objective and verifiable criteria. Check every "climate neutral" line on your site and in your ads.
Personal data under the revised FADP
We read the English translation of the FADP on Fedlex, last amended on 7 July 2025. Three articles matter most to a marketing team:
- Article 19. When you collect personal data, you must inform the person in an appropriate way, giving at least your identity and contact details, the purpose, and the recipients or categories of recipients, if any. Your enquiry forms and newsletter sign-ups need that notice.
- Article 14. A private controller based abroad must appoint a representative in Switzerland when it processes data of people in Switzerland in connection with offering them goods or services or monitoring their behaviour, and the processing is large scale, regular and high risk. The name and address of the representative must be published.
- Article 60. Private persons who wilfully give false or incomplete information under the duty to inform, among other breaches, face a fine of up to 250,000 francs on complaint. The fine falls on the responsible person, so ask your agency how it builds and records consent.
The regulator is the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC). If your agency is based in Germany or Austria, check that it applies Swiss rules rather than its home rules. Our page on SEO in Berlin and Germany shows how different the German requirements are.
What to put in the brief for a Swiss agency
| Service | What to ask for in writing |
|---|---|
| SEO | Which language versions will be written or fixed each month, with hreflang and Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools in your name |
| Local SEO in Basel, Bern, Geneva or Lausanne | A Business Profile owned by you, with your real address, hours and photos, in the language of that city |
| Google Ads and social ads | Accounts in your name, media cost shown apart from the agency fee |
| Email and SMS | Consent records, the sender shown, and a free refusal option in every message, as letter o requires |
| Data protection | Article 19 notices on every form, and a named contact for privacy questions |
Swiss agencies price by monthly retainer, fixed project or day rate. Compare quotes on hours, named people, languages covered, reports and exclusions. Refuse any offer that promises a position: Google's own page on hiring an SEO says "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google."
Questions about SEO and digital marketing in Switzerland
Is an EU email template enough for Swiss customers?
Not on its own. Check it against letter o of the UWG: prior consent or the narrow existing-customer exception, the correct sender, and a simple, free way to refuse in each message.
Which language should a Swiss website start with?
The language of the region where most of your buyers are. A firm in Geneva or Lausanne usually starts in French, one in Basel or Bern in German. Add other languages on their own URLs as you grow.
Does a foreign company marketing to Swiss customers need a Swiss representative?
Only when its processing of Swiss personal data meets all the Article 14 conditions: linked to offering goods or services or monitoring behaviour, large scale, regular and high risk. Check your own case with a lawyer.
Can we call our product climate neutral in Swiss ads?
Only if objective and verifiable criteria back the claim. Letter x of the UWG makes unsupported climate claims unfair, so keep the evidence behind every such line.
When can we judge whether our Swiss SEO agency is delivering?
Read Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools for impressions, positions and indexed pages in each language, the Business Profile performance report for calls and directions, and your enquiries by page. The outcome depends on competition, your offer and your budget.
What a Swiss buyer hears when they ask an assistant
StatCounter's September 2026 chatbot figures for Switzerland give ChatGPT 79.42% of use, Google Gemini 12.49% and Perplexity 3.48%. A buyer in Lausanne who asks ChatGPT in French for a marketing agency, and a buyer in Basel who asks in German, may get two different shortlists, because the assistant draws on the sources it can read in each language. AI Knows Us puts those questions in the buyer's own language to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, and shows which firms each answer names and the pages it relied on.
