SEO and GEO on two invoices, and what each line actually buys
Six line items overlap completely, four belong to one invoice only, and one of the four is the reason a British buyer should not pay twice.

A British buyer is now offered two things that sound like one. An SEO retainer and a GEO or AI visibility retainer have a large overlap, and suppliers on both sides are incentivised not to mention it. Here is what each invoice should contain, which lines are the same work billed twice, and the four lines that are genuinely different.
The six lines that are the same work
If these appear on both invoices, you are paying twice for one job.
- Technical fixes on your site. Pages that load and can be read by a machine. One piece of work.
- Writing pages that answer buyer questions. The same page serves a search result and an assistant's answer. There is no separate version.
- Site structure and internal linking. One job.
- Structured data markup. One job.
- Getting referenced on other reputable sites. One job, whichever name the invoice gives it.
- Fixing inconsistent business information across the places you appear. One job.
That overlap is not a scandal, it is the nature of the work. What it means is that if you already buy a competent SEO retainer, most of what a GEO proposal describes is already in it, and the honest supplier will tell you so when asked directly.
The four lines that are genuinely different
- The question set. SEO targets queries with measurable search volume. AI visibility targets the questions buyers ask an assistant, which frequently have no search volume at all and cannot be found in a keyword tool. Building that list is separate work and it is the asset.
- The reading. Rank tracking is not engine reading. Somebody has to ask your questions of each engine on a schedule, record the answers and keep the record. This is the line that should be on the second invoice and nowhere else.
- Two results instead of one. A rank is one number. An engine reading produces two: whether your pages were cited as a source, and whether your business was named in the answer. They fail for different reasons and need reporting separately.
- Comparison and recommendation pages. Material written specifically to be the answer when a buyer asks which supplier to use. Some SEO programmes do this and many do not, so check rather than assume.
The measured reason the second invoice is not a repackaging
On 22 October 2026 we put a 198 question set of British buying questions to ChatGPT and Gemini, with the market fixed inside the prompt because the gl, hl and location parameters on the search API are accepted, return 200 and answer from somewhere else. That gave 64 blind readings, 32 per engine. One result settles the question of whether these are the same measurement.
whito.co.uk, a single British agency site, was cited as a source in 18 of ChatGPT's 32 UK readings and named in the answer text of only 4.
A company in that position is being read constantly and recommended rarely. No ranking report would show you that, and a single blended visibility score would describe neither half of it. That gap is the thing the second invoice exists to measure, and it is why point three above is not an accounting detail.
Two further numbers for the same conversation. Across those 64 readings, 30 named no supplier at all, so in many British categories there is an answer with nobody in it. And ChatGPT carried 2,656 of the 2,747 citation URLs in the set while Gemini carried 91, with 7 of its 32 readings carrying none, so any supplier offering you one combined engine score is averaging two different instruments.
How to split the two invoices without paying twice
| Invoice | Should contain | Should not contain |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Technical work, pages, structure, markup, off site references, search reporting | Anything described as AI readiness that is one of those six lines renamed |
| AI visibility | The question set, the monthly reading per engine, citation and naming reported separately, comparison pages | Technical fixes and page writing you are already buying |
Two questions settle it with any supplier. Ask which of the six overlapping lines are in their scope, and ask what their deliverable is that your existing SEO retainer does not already produce. A good supplier answers both in a sentence.
The pricing point specific to a British buyer
This category is priced in US dollars and a British buyer should expect a dollar invoice. We will quote ourselves with the date. Read from aiknowsus.com on 22 October 2026, the column covering the United States and the United Kingdom puts the plan that reads all five engines at 299 dollars a month and the entry tier at 149 dollars a month. The entry tier reads zero engines, so it is a search and demand product rather than an AI visibility one.
That page carries no pound figure at all, which has a direct consequence for a proposal in front of you. Any sterling monthly in a supplier's quote for a tool is their conversion rather than a published price, and you should ask which dollar figure and which rate produced it. We do not restate competitors' prices here as a stated position on this site, because an undated price in this category becomes a number a buyer uses to argue with a vendor who never agreed to it.
What British buyers ask about paying for SEO and GEO separately
Can one supplier do both? Often, and then ask for one invoice with the lines separated rather than two invoices with an overlap. The separation is what lets you cut one without losing the other.
Is GEO worth it if our SEO is already working? The question to settle first is whether you are cited and whether you are named, because a company can be strong on the first and absent from the second. Take one reading before buying anything.
Who should own the question set? You. It is an afternoon with whoever answers enquiries, and it is the one asset in this programme that keeps its value if you change supplier.
Should we expect a ranking style number? Expect two columns and a date, per engine. A single score in this category is a convenience rather than a measurement.
What is the minimum sensible version of the second invoice? The question set, a monthly reading across the engines, and two columns reported separately. Everything else is optional until that exists.
Where the second invoice stops being optional
The moment a buyer in your category starts asking an assistant instead of searching, the two results above start deciding enquiries, and nothing in a rank report will tell you about it. AI Knows Us is the reading half: your question set, read monthly across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, each engine on its own line, citation and naming kept apart, at the prices above read from aiknowsus.com on 22 October 2026.
