SEO for CBD companies: claims, the November 2026 hemp change, earned links and how to choose an agency

Google lets CBD ads run only in narrow cases, so organic search carries most CBD brands, and it has to be built around the claim rules and the new hemp definition.

SEO for CBD companies matters more than SEO for most online shops, because the paid route is narrow. Google's ads policy, read on 22 October 2026, lets CBD advertisers in only through certification and only in California, Colorado and Puerto Rico. That leaves organic search as the main way a CBD brand gets found when somebody types what they want into Google. The work is the same craft as any e-commerce SEO, with three extra pressures: claims must stay inside what the law allows, the product catalogue has to follow the US hemp definition that changes on 12 November 2026, and links are harder to earn honestly. A good CBD SEO agency plans for all three from the first month.

Why paid search cannot carry a CBD brand

Google's Unapproved substances policy (part of its Healthcare and medicines policies) names two routes for CBD ads:

  • Advertisers of CBD pharmaceuticals approved by the US Food and Drug Administration must apply for Google's CBD Ads Certification.
  • Non-pharmaceutical, topical CBD advertisers in a location that allows CBD promotions must first get certified by LegitScript, then apply for the same Google certification.

The policy limits location targeting to California, Colorado and Puerto Rico, and some formats, such as the YouTube Masthead, cannot serve CBD ads at all. A CBD oil, gummy or capsule brand selling across the US fits neither route as written. For most CBD sellers, then, search traffic comes from organic results, and every product page, guide and category page has to earn its place.

The claim line, and why it shapes your content

The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act defines a "drug" to include articles "intended for use in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease" (21 U.S.C. 321(g)(1)). A page that says a CBD product treats anxiety, pain or insomnia describes it in the words of that definition. That is the line CBD content must not cross, and an SEO plan built on "CBD for [condition]" keywords walks straight into it.

Google adds its own pressure. Its guidance on helpful content says its systems give even more weight to content with strong experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust on topics that could affect people's health, which it calls "Your Money or Your Life" topics. For those, Google says, content "must be highly accurate and consistent with established expert consensus."

So the content that ranks and stays safe looks like this:

  • Product facts. Cannabinoid content per serving and per container, ingredients, serving size, format and batch numbers.
  • Lab reports. A certificate of analysis for each batch, linked from the product page as a crawlable HTML page or a clearly labelled PDF, not only as an image.
  • How-to and buying guides. How to read a lab report, the difference between product types, how to store a product, what the labels mean.
  • Named authors and reviewers. Who wrote the page and who checked it, with real credentials where a health topic is discussed.

Before anything is published, a person who knows your legal position should read the claims. An agency that offers to "rank you for CBD for anxiety" is offering you a problem.

The hemp definition changes on 12 November 2026

Section 781 of Public Law 119-37, signed on 12 November 2025, rewrites the federal definition of hemp in 7 U.S.C. 1639o, effective 365 days after enactment. The new text measures total THC, including THCA, against the 0.3 percent dry weight limit. It also excludes from "hemp" any final hemp-derived cannabinoid product that contains cannabinoids synthesized or made outside the plant, or more than 0.4 milligrams combined total per container of THC and other cannabinoids with similar effects. When we searched govinfo on 22 October 2026, bills to change this had been introduced in 2026, such as the Lawful Hemp Protection Act (H.R. 9830), and no enacted change appeared.

For SEO this is a catalogue event, and it should be planned like a site migration:

  1. List every product affected with your compliance adviser, using the lab data per container.
  2. Decide each URL's fate. A product that is reformulated keeps its URL and gets new facts. A product that is withdrawn with a close replacement gets a 301 redirect to that replacement. A product withdrawn with no replacement returns a 404 or 410 rather than a page saying "unavailable" with a 200 status.
  3. Update the content around it. Guides, category text and FAQs that describe old products or the old definition need to be corrected on the same day.
  4. Re-submit the sitemap so search engines see the new catalogue quickly.

Brands that leave dead product pages live, or keep selling copy that no longer matches the label, lose trust with both shoppers and search engines.

Technical SEO for a CBD shop

The technical basics are standard e-commerce work: clean category and product URLs, one canonical URL per product variant group, fast pages, product structured data and an accurate sitemap. Two CBD details deserve a test:

  • Age gates. Many CBD shops show an age check before the site. Use the URL Inspection tool in Search Console to confirm Google sees the product content behind it, not just the gate.
  • State shipping rules. If you do not ship to some states, say so on the product and shipping pages in plain text. Location pages for states should exist only where you sell and have something real to say about that state.

Links without breaking the rules

CBD sites find it hard to earn links, and the shortcuts on offer are usually spam. Google's spam policies, updated 28 August 2026, list "sending someone a product in exchange for them writing about it and including a link" as link spam, along with buying links and exchanging goods or services for them. Free samples sent to bloggers in return for a followed link fall squarely inside that.

The links that hold up come from work worth citing: original data from your own lab testing, clear explainers on the hemp rules, local press for a physical store, and industry associations or trade events you actually take part in. The same policy page says paid and sponsored links are not a violation when they carry a rel="nofollow" or rel="sponsored" attribute, so samples sent for honest review are fine when no link is required and any link is qualified that way.

How to choose a CBD SEO agency

Treat the first call as a compliance test as much as a marketing one. Ask these questions and listen for direct answers:

QuestionA good answer sounds like
Which keywords will you avoid?Disease and condition claims, with a reason
Who checks claims before publishing?A named reviewer, and room for your legal adviser
How will you handle the November 2026 hemp change?A URL-by-URL plan with redirects and updates
How do you build links?Earned links, with no paid or product-for-link deals
Who owns the content and accounts? You do, from day one

Treat any promise of a set ranking or a date for page one as a reason to keep looking. For the general hiring process, our guide on how to choose an SEO agency covers contracts and reporting in more detail.

When a shopper asks an assistant instead

Some buyers now ask ChatGPT or Gemini which CBD brand publishes third-party lab tests, or which product suits a beginner, before they search Google at all. The assistant builds that answer from what it can find on the open web, so a brand that publishes clean product facts and batch lab results gives it something accurate to repeat. Whether they actually name you is a separate question from your Google ranking, and it is the one AI Knows Us was built to answer.

Questions about SEO for CBD companies

Can CBD companies advertise on Google?

Only in narrow cases. Google's policy covers FDA-approved pharmaceutical CBD and certified topical CBD, with location targeting limited to California, Colorado and Puerto Rico. Most CBD brands rely on organic search instead.

Can a CBD website rank for health conditions?

Writing that a product treats or prevents a disease uses the language of the drug definition in 21 U.S.C. 321(g)(1). Keep product pages to product facts and keep any health information accurate, sourced and reviewed.

What does the 2026 hemp change mean for SEO?

Products that fall outside the new definition from 12 November 2026 need a plan per URL: reformulate and update, redirect to a replacement, or return a 404 or 410. Related guides and category pages need updating too.

Are lab reports good for SEO?

Yes. Batch lab reports linked from product pages answer a question shoppers ask, give the page unique content, and support trust on a health-related topic.

Is it safe to send free products to bloggers for links?

Only without a link requirement. Google lists sending a product in exchange for a post with a link as link spam. Ask for honest reviews and let any link be marked sponsored.
