SEO for optometrists: exam pages, a profile for each doctor, and the prescription rules that make a good trust page

How an optometry practice gets found for eye exams, contact lens fittings and eye problems, and how the FTC's Eyeglass and Contact Lens Rules can become a page patients trust.

SEO for optometrists is mostly local SEO with a medical edge. The practice that gets the booking is the one that shows in the map for "eye exam near me", has a clear page for each type of visit, and answers the questions patients ask before they book: do you take my vision plan, can I get my prescription, how soon can you see my child. Build a complete Google Business Profile for the practice and, where it fits, for each doctor. Publish a page per exam type and per common eye problem. Then turn the FTC's prescription rules into a plain page that tells patients what they are entitled to, because it answers a real search and builds trust at the same time.

What patients search for

Optometry searches come in three kinds.

  • Routine visits. "Eye exam near me", "eye doctor that takes [vision plan]", "kids eye exam", "contact lens exam". These are high intent and local.
  • Problems. "Dry eyes", "red eye", "something in my eye", "seeing floaters". Some of these are urgent, and the searcher wants to know if you can see them today.
  • Eyewear. "Glasses store near me", frame brand names, "same day glasses". These overlap with optical retail.

Each kind needs its own pages. A single "Services" page that lists twelve things in bullet points cannot rank for any of them.

The pages an optometry site needs

PageWhat it should cover
Comprehensive eye examWhat happens, how long it takes, whether pupils are dilated, what to bring, cost basis and plans accepted
Contact lens exam and fittingWhy it is separate from a glasses exam, follow up visits, trial lenses
Children's eye examsAges you see, what the exam involves, school vision screening versus a full exam
One page per condition you treatDry eye, eye infections, glaucoma monitoring, diabetic eye exams: symptoms, when to come in, what you do
Urgent eye careWhich problems you see same day, how to reach you, when to go to the emergency room instead
Insurance and vision plansEvery plan you accept, by name, kept current
DoctorsA page per doctor with degree, licence state, special interests and languages
Your prescriptionWhat you give patients after an exam and fitting, see below

Write each condition page in plain language, reviewed and signed by one of your doctors. Health searches are held to a high standard, and a named clinician with a real credential is the clearest signal you can give a reader.

Turn the FTC prescription rules into a trust page

Patients search "can I get my glasses prescription" and "can my eye doctor make me buy contacts from them". The answer is federal law, and a practice that explains it plainly earns trust that a competitor hiding it does not.

The Eyeglass Rule, 16 CFR Part 456 (eCFR, current to 19 October 2026), says it is an unfair practice for an optometrist or ophthalmologist to:

  • fail to give the patient a copy of their prescription immediately after the refractive exam and before offering to sell glasses, whether or not the patient asks (456.2(a));
  • make an eye exam available only to people who agree to buy glasses from the practice (456.2(b));
  • charge an extra fee to release the prescription (456.2(c)).

A digital copy is allowed only after the patient gives verifiable affirmative consent to the delivery method, such as email, text or a patient portal (456.3). Practices with a financial interest in selling eyewear must also confirm the release, for example by asking the patient to sign a statement, and keep the record for at least three years (456.4).

The Contact Lens Rule, 16 CFR Part 315, says that after a contact lens fitting the prescriber must give the patient a copy of the prescription whether or not they ask, must verify it for anyone acting for the patient, and must send a copy to that person within 40 business hours of a request (315.3(a)). The prescriber may not require the patient to buy lenses, pay an extra fee or sign a waiver to get it (315.3(b)).

Your "Your prescription" page can say all of this in four sentences, then add what makes you worth buying from anyway: the fitting, adjustments, warranty and the people. That is a stronger pitch than hoping a patient does not know the rules.

Google Business Profile for the practice and each doctor

Google says local results are mainly based on "relevance, distance, and popularity", and that there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. For an optometry practice:

  • Practice profile. The real name on your sign, the right primary category, accurate hours including evening and Saturday hours if you offer them, and the booking link.
  • Doctor profiles. Google's guidelines say individual practitioners, such as doctors, may have separate profiles. They suit practices where patients search for a doctor by name. Read Google's specific guidelines for practitioners before creating one.
  • Optical shop. If your optical has its own entrance and hours, check whether Google treats it as a department with its own profile.

Reviews, carefully

Ask every patient for a review. Do not offer a discount on frames in exchange. Google's review policy forbids incentives such as discounts or free goods, and the FTC's rule 16 CFR 465.4 makes it unlawful to give incentives for reviews that express a particular sentiment.

When you reply, do not confirm that the reviewer is a patient or mention anything about their visit. HIPAA protects patient information, and the federal health privacy office has settled with practices over review replies that disclosed patient details. Thank them, and invite them to call the office to talk it through. For a practice with several doctors and profiles, our guide to healthcare reputation management covers who should own each one.

Structured data

Schema.org has an Optician type for a store that sells glasses, listed under MedicalBusiness, and an Optometric value for the medicalSpecialty property. Mark up the practice as a MedicalClinic with medicalSpecialty set to Optometric (or as an Optician if it is mainly an eyewear store), and each doctor as a Physician with the same specialty. Keep the name, address and phone identical to the Business Profile.

Local Services Ads

Google's Local Services Ads list Optometrist as a category (Google Ads help, read 21 October 2026). The same page says booking leads are not available for health care categories, and pre-badge ads are not available for them either, so a practice has to finish verification before it can go live. These ads appear above the map and charge per lead. They are a paid channel, but the reviews and profile work above feed both.

Questions about SEO for optometrists

What is the most important SEO task for an optometry practice?

A complete Google Business Profile with accurate hours and plans accepted, and a separate page for each exam type and each condition you treat.

Should an optometrist publish the prescription rules on their website?

It is a good idea. Patients search for it, and the FTC's Eyeglass Rule and Contact Lens Rule set out exactly what they are entitled to, so a plain page answers the question and shows you play fair.

Can each optometrist in a practice have a Google profile?

Google's guidelines say individual practitioners may have separate profiles. Read its specific practitioner guidelines first, and keep each doctor's details identical to their page on your website.

How should an optometrist reply to a bad review?

Briefly, politely, and without confirming the person is a patient or mentioning any detail of their care. Offer a phone number so the conversation moves off the public page.

What makes an optometry SEO company worth hiring?

One that builds pages per exam and condition, has your doctors review health content, keeps your profile and plan list current, and reports bookings rather than just rankings.

When a patient asks an assistant which eye doctor to see

Parents now ask ChatGPT or Gemini things like "which eye doctor near me sees young kids and takes our vision plan". The reply names a few practices and describes them from their websites, profiles and reviews. A practice that never states the plans it accepts or the ages it sees is easy to leave out of that answer. Checking how you are described there is a new kind of visibility work, and AI Knows Us is one service that measures it for local practices.
