SEO prices in India: what each tier costs per month, and what makes the same brief cost three times more
A pricing explainer for Indian buyers: retainer, project and hourly rates, why ecommerce costs more, how GST changes the real number, and the two pricing models to refuse.

SEO in India is sold in four price bands. Below INR 10,000 a month you are buying a few hours of junior time. INR 10,000 to 30,000 a month is the freelancer and solo consultant band and is enough for a single location business or a small site. INR 30,000 to 1,00,000 a month is where a small agency runs a real programme with technical work, content and outreach. Above INR 1,00,000 a month is large sites, ecommerce catalogues, several languages or several markets. One off work is priced separately: a technical audit usually runs INR 15,000 to 75,000, and a content or migration project is quoted on scope. Every one of those figures attracts 18 percent GST.
Those bands are a working read of what Indian providers publish on their own sites, in rate cards and in public packages, together with how the market is structured. They are a reference point for spotting a quote that sits far outside it, not a benchmark to hold a good provider to.
What you get for the money, band by band
| Monthly fee | Hours you are roughly buying | What fits inside |
|---|---|---|
| Under INR 10,000 | 4 to 8 junior hours | Google Business Profile upkeep, one page a month, basic reporting. Nothing technical. |
| INR 10,000 to 30,000 | 10 to 25 hours, often one experienced person | A focused plan on one goal: local search, or a small set of pages, or clearing a known technical problem. |
| INR 30,000 to 1,00,000 | A small team, part time across the month | Technical fixes, four to eight pages, outreach, conversion tracking that can be audited, a named account lead. |
| Above INR 1,00,000 | A dedicated team with specialists | Large site architecture, ecommerce catalogue work, several languages, a content editor, link acquisition with real standards. |
Six things that move the same brief up a band
- Site size. Forty pages and forty thousand pages are different disciplines. Past a few thousand URLs, crawl budget, faceted navigation and templates dominate the work.
- Competition in your category. Loans, insurance, education, real estate and health are contested by companies with large budgets and full in house teams. The same effort moves you less, so more effort is quoted.
- How much content you need written, and in how many languages. One well researched 1,200 word page in English from a competent writer is commonly INR 2,000 to 8,000; a specialist category, or Hindi, Tamil or Marathi written properly rather than translated, costs more.
- Whether a developer is included. Many Indian quotes assume your team will make the changes. If you do not have a developer, the agency has to supply one, and that is a different number.
- Whether links are part of the scope. Genuine outreach, digital public relations and getting listed where buyers look is slow and expensive. This is the line most often cut to hit a price point.
- Seniority. The single biggest hidden variable. Two agencies quoting INR 50,000 can be giving you twenty hours of a two year executive or six hours of somebody who has done this for a decade.
Pricing models you will be offered, and what to do with each
- Monthly retainer. The right default for ongoing work. Make the agreement list monthly deliverables with quantities, not just channels.
- Fixed project. The best value purchase in Indian SEO and the most underused. An audit, a migration, a set of twenty pages, a site speed fix. Scope it, price it, finish it, stop paying.
- Hourly. INR 1,500 to 6,000 an hour across the market. Excellent for a review, a second opinion or training your own person.
- Pay per keyword. Refuse it. It pays the provider for ranking phrases that are easy, not phrases that bring buyers, and the incentive points away from your revenue.
- Pay on results, meaning payment on a ranking position. Refuse this too. It sounds like risk transfer and in practice it pushes the provider towards tactics that produce a position quickly and cost you later. Google's own documentation is explicit that nobody can promise a particular position.
Ecommerce SEO costs more, and here is the arithmetic
An Indian ecommerce brand should expect the INR 1,00,000 and above band, and often considerably more, because the work is structurally larger. A catalogue generates near duplicate product pages, filter combinations that create endless URLs, pages that go out of stock and come back, and category pages that need genuine content rather than a product grid. Then there is the part most quotes skip: product feed quality for Google Shopping, review markup, and making sure the same product is not competing with itself across three category paths. If a firm quotes you a catalogue site at INR 25,000 a month, ask specifically how they plan to handle faceted navigation. The answer tells you everything.
The real cost, after tax
Compare quotes after tax, not before. An agency retainer of INR 50,000 is billed at INR 59,000 with GST, and if your business is GST registered that 18 percent is normally available to you as input tax credit, which makes a registered agency cheaper in practice than an unregistered freelancer quoting the same headline number. Tax is also deducted at source on professional fees and contract payments; find out the applicable rate from your accountant and tell the provider before the first invoice, because handling it as a surprise sours an engagement in its first month. For a cross border engagement the picture changes again, and export of services rules apply; that is an accountant question, not an agency question.
What a fair first engagement looks like at each budget
Under INR 30,000 a month, buy one thing and finish it. Local search for a single location, or the twelve pages that cover what your buyers actually search, or the technical audit and its execution. Between INR 30,000 and INR 1,00,000, buy six months, because that is roughly where search work starts returning, and set a ninety day checkpoint with specific deliverables so you are not waiting blind. Above INR 1,00,000, buy a three month paid discovery and planning phase first, then commit; at that budget the cost of discovering in month five that the plan was wrong is larger than the cost of planning properly.
SEO prices in India: what buyers ask when they are comparing two quotes
Is cheaper SEO in India worse?
Lower cost here reflects lower salary and rent, not lower skill, and India exports a great deal of competent search work for exactly that reason. What low price does reliably reduce is hours and seniority. So the right question about a low quote is never whether the provider is good, it is how many hours of whose time you are buying and what those hours will produce.
How long should I commit for?
Three months is enough to see whether a provider works the way they said they would. Six to nine months is where search investment usually starts showing in enquiries. A twelve month lock in with no exit clause at the ninety day mark is worth negotiating down.
What should a technical audit cost, and is it worth buying alone?
INR 15,000 to 75,000 depending on site size, and yes, it is often the best first purchase. Buy it from somebody who is not bidding for the retainer if you can, and ask for the output as a prioritised list your developer can work from, not a sixty page PDF.
Why does the same agency quote my competitor less?
Usually site size, category difficulty or scope. Sometimes it is simply that they want the logo. Ask for the scope documents side by side if you can get them, and compare line by line rather than comparing totals.
Can I pay a freelancer and skip the agency entirely?
Often, yes, and for a small site it is frequently the better buy. The things to arrange are cover when they are unavailable, a developer for the technical items, and a written scope, because an informal freelance arrangement is where scope quietly shrinks.
Do these prices apply if I am buying from outside India?
The Indian supply side prices in rupees and a foreign buyer usually pays within the same bands, which is why the cross border market exists. The differences that matter are time zone overlap, how the contract and intellectual property are handled, and payment mechanics. Our guide to buying SEO from India covers that side in full.
One line item no Indian quote includes yet
Price out every proposal you have and you will find none of them mentions what an assistant says about you. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity to recommend suppliers in your category in India and you get three or four names, not a page of results, and the businesses in that answer are there because of what they and others have published. It is becoming a real channel while it is still absent from every rate card in the market, which makes it unusually cheap to be early on. Pricing that work, and showing what it returns, is what AI Knows Us does.
