SEO services compared, what the phrase actually covers, and the five very different things sold under it

Two searches a month ask what SEO services means and what defines them. The honest answer is that the phrase covers five separate purchases, and the invoice tells you which one you bought.

SEO services is not one product. The phrase covers five purchases that share a name and almost nothing else, and the reason the definition matters is commercial rather than academic: four of the five are billed monthly and one is billed once, so a buyer who agrees to the wrong one pays for twelve months of something they needed for three weeks.

So the definition worth having is not a dictionary line. It is the list of things a supplier can actually hand you, because that list is what you are buying.

The five things sold as SEO services

One. The audit, or diagnosis. Somebody crawls your site, reads your analytics and your Search Console data, and writes down what is wrong and in what order. Delivered once, as a document and a call. This is the only one of the five that has a natural end, and it is the right first purchase for almost every business that has never bought SEO before.

Two. Technical remediation. Somebody fixes what the audit found. Page speed, crawl waste, broken internal links, duplicate templates, indexation, structured data, the things that live in the code rather than in the copy. Scoped as a project with a finish line, or absorbed into a retainer where it quietly never finishes.

Three. Content production. Pages get written, usually against a keyword plan. Billed per page, per word, or as a monthly quota. This is the largest line item in most retainers and the one with the widest quality range, because the words can be written by a subject specialist or by nobody in particular.

Four. Authority work, usually called link building. Somebody tries to get other websites to reference yours. Priced per placement or as a monthly quota, and the only one of the five where the quota model and the quality model are in direct opposition.

Five. Measurement and reporting. Somebody tells you what happened. Often bundled free, which is why it is often the weakest part of the engagement, because a supplier reporting on its own work chooses the chart.

A supplier selling you SEO services is selling some mixture of those five. Ask for the mixture as percentages of the fee and the vague purchase becomes a specific one.

The definition a contract can use

Here is the version that survives a procurement review. SEO services are the work of making a website the answer a search engine selects, consisting of diagnosis, technical correction, published content, external references and measurement, delivered either as a fixed project or as a recurring retainer. Everything else in the category is a packaging decision.

Two consequences follow from that wording and both are useful.

The first is that a retainer is a delivery model, not a definition. There is nothing about SEO that requires monthly billing. It is billed monthly because content and authority work accumulate, and because suppliers prefer predictable revenue. Both are honest reasons and neither obliges you.

The second is that the measurement line is separable from the rest, and should be. For broader context on what this market actually charges for the whole bundle, this site carries a page on what the four contract clauses are that make an SEO method checkable at best white hat SEO services compared. Measured on 21 October 2026, no other page on this site links to that one, out of 2,405 live pages of which 982 have no inbound internal link by the same measure, which is 40.8 percent and an upper bound.

What has changed about the definition since 2024

The five purchases above describe a search results page. There is now a sixth surface that none of them covers, and it is the reason this definition needed rewriting rather than restating.

When a buyer asks an assistant who to use, the assistant returns two or three names in a sentence. There is no results page, no position, and no click for a rank tracker to count. A supplier can deliver every one of the five services above, deliver them well, and have no reading at all on whether that sentence contains your name.

What vendors publish about this surface, read on 21 October 2026, varies enormously and the words are worth quoting rather than summarising.

Ahrefs Brand Radar"Brand Radar measures AI visibility by running 493 million+ search-backed prompts through AI platforms". It names AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, states "Claude consumes 8 checks per update", and prices overage at "$0.020/check billed monthly". Note that Claude is not in its named platform list although its own sentence prices a Claude check, so the page carries two readings and we are reporting both rather than the tidier one.
ProfoundA free Trial of "50 unique prompts", "Daily for 7 days", 3 answer engines, SSO "No". Enterprise is priced "Custom" with "Up to 9 Answer Engines tracked" and "SSO/SAML + SOC 2 compliance".
SE Ranking"Track brands across Google AIOs, AI Mode, ChatGPT, and Gemini" and "5 free checks per day". Claude appears in its FAQ as an assistant people favour rather than as a tracked engine.
BrightLocalA free one-off checker. "Pick from Google AI Mode, or ChatGPT", "Check up to 5 prompts", one location per check, delivered as a PDF to an email address with no card.

Where we sit in that list, and the one row where two of them beat us

AI Knows Us belongs on this page as the sixth item in the definition rather than as a sixth supplier of the first five. We sell no audits, no content by the page, no links and no retainers, so we are not an alternative to any SEO service described above.

What we sell is one reading. We put a buyer's real question to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews with your company name kept out of the question, and report which companies get named. Read at aiknowsus.com/pricing on 23 October 2026, Growth is $299 a month for 100 buyer questions, 1,200 scheduled answers and all five apps, and a Claude check uses 3 credits "because Claude costs us more to run" while most checks use one. The published floor is SEO Start at $149, and that tier watches 0 buyer questions on 0 engines, so $149 buys none of this and a sentence pairing $149 with five surfaces would be false.

On the definitional question this page is actually about, two rivals beat us outright and it is worth stating plainly. SE Ranking publishes 5 free checks a day and BrightLocal publishes a free one-off report for an email address. We publish no free check at all. If what you want today is to find out whether this sixth surface mentions you before you decide it is real, both of those are a better first move than paying us, and we would rather say so than pretend our paywall is a feature. Profound also beats us on two published rows: up to 9 answer engines against our 5, and SSO, SAML and SOC 2 compliance, none of which renders anywhere in our pricing text.

One honest caution about our own page. Our pricing describes the Agency plan as covering 10 client brands, while the comparison table's "More than one business" row reads "No" for every plan including Agency. Those two readings contradict each other, they were both rendering on 21 October 2026, and anyone relying on the multi-brand figure should confirm it rather than take either from us.

Questions buyers ask about what SEO services include

Is an audit an SEO service or something separate? It is one of the five and it is the only one with a natural end. Buying it alone is legitimate and is usually the right first purchase.

Does SEO have to be monthly? No. Monthly is a billing model chosen by suppliers because content and authority accumulate. A scoped project with a finish line is a normal way to buy the technical half.

Why do two suppliers quoting the same phrase differ by ten times on price? Because they are selling different mixtures of the five. Ask each for the fee split by discipline as percentages adding to one hundred, and the comparison becomes possible.

Is answer engine work part of SEO services now? Nobody in the market has settled this and the vendors above disagree with each other. Treat it as a separate measurement until a supplier will write it into a scope with a named deliverable.
