Shopify PPC management: the channels Shopify connects, what Autopilot now does itself, and what to pay a manager for
Google, Meta, Shop Campaigns and Shopify Audiences, read from Shopify's own help centre, and the split between what the platform automates and what still needs a person.

Shopify PPC means paid ads for a Shopify store, mostly Google Shopping and Performance Max through the Google and YouTube channel, and Meta ads through the Facebook and Instagram channel. Shopify connects both from the admin, syncs your products to each platform's catalogue, and now offers Campaign Autopilot, which can create and run some Meta and Microsoft Advertising campaigns for you after you approve them. A PPC manager or agency is worth paying for the parts the connections do not do: a clean product feed, margin aware campaign structure, honest conversion tracking, creative, and a weekly decision on where the budget goes. If a proposal is mostly "we will connect your channels", that part is now a few clicks.
Every platform detail below comes from Shopify's Help Center, read on 21 October 2026. Shopify's help notes that Shopify Support cannot set up third party advertising for you, so Google and Meta account questions go to Google and Meta.
The paid channels a Shopify store can plug in
| Channel | How it connects to Shopify | What it is for | Who it is available to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Shopping and Performance Max | Google and YouTube sales channel, which syncs products to Google Merchant Center | Product ads across Search, YouTube, Gmail and Maps | Certain countries and currencies |
| Meta (Facebook and Instagram) | Facebook and Instagram by Meta channel, Meta pixel and Conversions API | Prospecting and retargeting with product catalogue ads | Free with all plans, subject to store eligibility |
| Campaign Autopilot | Growth, then Autopilot, in the admin | Recommended campaigns you approve, on Meta, Microsoft Advertising, Shop Campaigns and email | Plan eligibility and per channel pricing are set out in Shopify's requirements page |
| Shop Campaigns | Shopify admin | Ads on the Shop app, shop.com and other placements; you pay only when a customer converts | See Shopify's requirements |
| Shopify Audiences | Shopify Audiences app | Custom audience lists exported to ad platforms such as Meta and Google | Shopify Plus stores on Shopify Payments, based in the US or Canada |
Google: the channel sets up the feed, and the feed decides the ads
The Google and YouTube channel is installed from the Shopify App Store and is managed by Google. It syncs your products to Google Merchant Center, so you can update listings from the Shopify admin. For eligible stores selling in the United States, synced products can also appear in free listings on the Google Shopping tab.
Before products sync, the store must meet Merchant Center's requirements as Shopify lists them: the online store cannot be in private mode, a payment provider must be set up, a refund policy and terms of service must be in the footer menu, and at least one contact method must be visible to customers. You must ship to a supported country and sell in the matching currency. A multi-client Merchant Center account, which many agencies use, cannot be connected directly, so the store's own Merchant Center account is the one that connects.
For paid ads, Shopify's help says Performance Max has replaced Smart Shopping, which can no longer be created, and that new Performance Max campaigns can be created in Merchant Center from the channel. Connect your Google Ads account in the channel to get conversion measurement, and connect Google Analytics 4 at the same time.
The connection is the easy part. What decides results is the data in the feed: product titles written the way people search, accurate product types, prices and availability that match the site, and good images. Our guide to advertising on Google Shopping covers the feed in detail, and it applies to any Shopify store.
Meta: the channel, the pixel and now Autopilot
The Facebook and Instagram by Meta channel syncs products to a catalogue on Facebook and Instagram and is where you create or add the Meta pixel, choose the customer data sharing level, and use the Conversions API. Shopify's pixel tools sit under Customer events in the admin, where app pixels and custom pixels are managed. Use an app pixel where one exists, as Shopify recommends.
Campaign Autopilot is newer and changes the buying decision. Shopify's help describes it this way:
- Autopilot connects to a Meta ad account, syncs products to a separate Meta catalogue, and recommends Meta Advantage+ campaigns as tactics you approve or dismiss.
- You set spend targets with a monthly budget and guardrails. Shopify notes that the monthly budget is a target rather than a hard limit, so Autopilot can sometimes spend above it.
- Ad spend is billed by Meta, not on your Shopify bill.
- Autopilot manages its campaigns separately and does not change your other Meta campaigns. If you edit an Autopilot campaign directly in Meta, Autopilot might overwrite the change on the next update.
- Ads that target EU countries need advertiser and payer information added in Meta first.
For a small store with no ad experience, Autopilot is a reasonable way to start. The trade off is control: the campaign logic is Shopify's, and you approve rather than design.
Shop Campaigns and Shopify Audiences
Shop Campaigns run ads on the Shop app, shop.com, the Shopify Product Network and third party platforms, and Shopify's help says you pay only when a customer converts. That pricing makes it easy to test, and the cost per acquisition should be compared with what Google and Meta deliver for the same products.
Shopify Audiences is for Plus stores on Shopify Payments in the US or Canada. It builds lists of shoppers likely to buy from you and exports them to ad platforms such as Meta and Google for targeting. It requires Shopify Network Intelligence to be on in your privacy settings.
What to pay a Shopify PPC manager for
With channels this easy to connect, a manager's value is in decisions. A good Shopify PPC service covers:
- Feed quality. Product titles, types and attributes improved in Shopify or with a feed tool, because they flow into every Google and Meta ad.
- Structure by margin. High margin and best selling products get their own campaigns or asset groups, so budget is not spent evenly on products that earn unevenly.
- Measurement you can trust. Google Ads and the Meta pixel both report sales, and both can claim the same order. A manager should reconcile platform numbers with Shopify's own orders and report the difference.
- Creative. Fresh images and video for Meta, and assets for Performance Max.
- A weekly budget call. Which campaigns get more, which get less, and why, in writing.
Ask every quote the same questions: whose name are the Google Ads, Merchant Center and Meta Business accounts in (they should be yours), how is the fee calculated, and how will the work sit alongside Autopilot if you use it, since Autopilot can overwrite edits to its own campaigns.
Questions about Shopify PPC
Does Shopify run Google Ads for me?
Not by itself. The Google and YouTube channel syncs products to Merchant Center and connects Google Ads, and Performance Max campaigns are created through Merchant Center. Shopify's Autopilot help, read on 21 October 2026, covers Meta, Microsoft Advertising, Shop Campaigns and email, and has no Google Ads section.
Who do I contact about a disapproved Google ad?
Google. Shopify's help says ad approvals are checked and fixed in Google Ads, and that Merchant Center and Google Ads questions go to Google.
Is Shopify Autopilot a replacement for a PPC agency?
For a new store testing Meta ads, it can be enough. Stores with larger budgets usually want control over structure and creative, plus reporting checked against Shopify's own sales.
Can an agency use its own Merchant Center account?
Not a multi-client account. Shopify says those cannot be connected to the channel directly, so the store's own Merchant Center account connects and the agency is given access.
Where is ad spend billed?
By the ad platform. For Autopilot Meta campaigns, Shopify says spend is billed by Meta, not on the Shopify bill.
The click that happens before the ad
A growing share of product research starts with a question to an assistant rather than a search: which brand of running shoe for flat feet, which candle shop ships fast. ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews answer with a handful of names, and no ad account shows whether your store was one of them. That decides how many shoppers reach the point where your paid ads find them. AI Knows Us does not run ads. It measures that earlier moment, whether the assistants name your store when a buyer asks, and which sources they relied on.
