The Amazon advertising platform in 2026: what it actually sells now, and the rename that dates every comparison
Amazon sells self service sponsored ads with no up front fee, and a managed route its own site puts at a fifty thousand dollar minimum. Between them sits a product that changed its name this year.

Amazon advertising is not one product and the names moved this year, which is why most comparisons you will read are describing a platform that no longer exists in that shape. Here is what Amazon's own advertising site publishes, read on 21 October 2026, with the page each claim comes from.
The three routes Amazon sells
Sponsored ads, self service. Amazon's home advertising page describes these as self service solutions with no up front fees that can be set up in minutes, charged on a cost per click basis. This is the entry route and it is the right one for nearly every advertiser who sells on the marketplace. You register as an advertiser, follow the on screen steps and create a campaign.
Display, video and the demand side platform. The same page describes these as additional solutions to explore as goals grow, reaching customers across multiple channels rather than only on Amazon's own surfaces. These are where off marketplace reach is bought using Amazon's purchase data, which is the signal no social platform can sell.
Managed service. Amazon states on its own site that advertising through a managed service option with an Amazon Ads account executive typically requires a minimum spend of fifty thousand dollars. That figure is the single most useful number on this page, because it draws the line between the self service platform and the enterprise one, and it is a limit rather than a price, so it does not change with where you are reading from.
The rename, and why it dates every comparison written before now
Amazon's demand side platform has changed name. The product page at advertising.amazon.com/solutions/products/amazon-dsp, read on 21 October 2026, states that Amazon DSP is now part of Amazon Ads Agent, and that Amazon DSP has evolved into Amazon Ads Agent, described as one omnichannel ad platform with AI. The same page names DVA+ as the component that brings programmatic buying to all advertisers through simplified outcome based campaign creation, with advanced settings retained for advertisers who want full control.
Now the awkward part, measured on the same day. The advertising.amazon.com home page, requested minutes apart from the same machine, still lists Amazon DSP as a current additional solution alongside display and video ads, with no mention of Amazon Ads Agent anywhere in its rendered text. Amazon's own two pages disagree about what this product is called.
That matters practically rather than pedantically. If you are briefing an agency, comparing proposals, or reading anything an assistant tells you about Amazon DSP, you are now in a window where the old name and the new one both return results and only one of them describes the current product. Ask any supplier which of the two they mean and when they last logged in. And check the name renders on the vendor's own product page before you build a comparison on it, because a product can be renamed under you between one quarter's plan and the next.
What each route is genuinely good at
| Route | Signal you are buying | Fee basis Amazon publishes | Right for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sponsored ads, self service | Shopping intent on Amazon's own marketplace: what somebody searched and bought there | Cost per click, no up front fees | Any seller with listings, from the first month |
| Display and video | Audiences built from Amazon purchase and browse behaviour, shown off Amazon as well as on it | Budgets you set | Brands with a product line and a reason to reach non shoppers |
| Brand Stores | A free destination rather than a paid placement | No media cost for the store itself | Every brand with a registered trademark on Amazon |
| Managed service with an account executive | Amazon's own planning and buying resource | Typically a fifty thousand dollar minimum spend | Enterprise budgets only |
How to start without wasting the first month
- Fix the listing before the ad. On Amazon the advert sends traffic to a page you do not control the template of, and conversion on that page decides whether any bid is affordable. Title, images, bullet points and reviews do more for a campaign than bid management does in month one.
- Start on your own brand terms. They are the cheapest clicks you will ever buy and they tell you what your listing converts at before you pay competitive prices to find out.
- Separate campaign types. Keep brand defence, category terms and competitor terms in different campaigns, because their economics are different by an order of magnitude and a blended report hides it.
- Read the search term report weekly and write negatives. This is the whole job in the first quarter, and it is why bid automation alone changes less than people expect.
- Know the neighbouring product set. Prime is sold under three different names and only one of them runs on Prime Video, which is set out in the three products sold as Amazon Prime advertising. On today's measurement no other page on this site links to it.
Questions buyers ask about the Amazon ad platform
Do I need to sell on Amazon to advertise there? For sponsored ads, yes, because they promote listings. For display and the demand side platform, no: those reach Amazon audiences on other properties and are bought by brands that sell elsewhere.
What does it cost to start? Amazon publishes no up front fee for sponsored ads and charges per click, so the floor is whatever daily budget you set. The fifty thousand dollar figure applies to the managed route with an account executive, not to self service.
Is Amazon Ads Agent the same as Amazon DSP? Amazon's own DSP product page says DSP has evolved into Amazon Ads Agent and is now part of it. Its home page still names DSP as a current product. Treat them as one product mid rename and ask any vendor to say which interface they actually use.
Can an agency run this cheaper than I can? It can run it with more attention, which matters most on large catalogues. Below a few thousand dollars a month in spend the management fee usually exceeds the waste it removes.
The Amazon buyer who never reaches your listing
Amazon's advantage is that it sees purchase intent. There is now a step before that, and it happens outside Amazon entirely. A shopper deciding which brand of a thing to buy increasingly asks an assistant first, and ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews answer with two or three brand names assembled from reviews, roundups and forum threads. The shopper then goes to Amazon and searches for that brand by name. Your sponsored ads see a branded search and report a cheap, efficient click, and nothing in Amazon's reporting records that the brand choice was made somewhere Amazon has no visibility into.
That is the most expensive blind spot in retail media right now, because it looks like success in the dashboard. Measuring it is a separate category of purchase and it is the category we are in.
On the criterion used throughout this page, what the provider publishes on its own pages rather than what a third party reports, AI Knows Us is the option for that surface. Our plan table renders in six currencies on the server. The unit is published as one buyer question asked on one app once, a Claude check costs three of those credits and most cost one, and the buyer questions never name the business being measured. Growth at 299 dollars a month publishes 100 buyer questions watched, 1,200 scheduled answers and all five engines, and it is the cheapest plan we sell that reads all five. The 149 dollar tier publishes zero questions, zero credits and zero engines and reads none of them, so nobody should read our pricing page as AI visibility from 149 dollars.
Where rivals are ahead, plainly. Ahrefs publishes Brand Radar with per surface prompt counts on ahrefs.com/brand-radar, read the same day, and states that every prompt is modeled from real user searches in its own keyword database rather than observed, which is a disclosure about method that we should match and currently state differently. It also publishes a per check consumption rate, including that Claude consumes eight checks per update, and reads Copilot, where we publish neither figure and do not read Copilot. Jasper sells GEO and AI Optimization inside a marketing suite and HubSpot ships AEO in beta inside its marketing hub, both read 21 October 2026, so a team already paying either gets a version of this without another login, and we are another login.
