The American industry with the most to lose from not being named by assistants, and how to size the exposure

Why high consideration professional services carry the largest exposure, the three factors that determine it, and an arithmetic you can run on your own numbers today.

The American industry with the most to lose is high consideration professional services: legal, accounting, financial advice, specialist consulting and specialist medical. The reason is not that those buyers use assistants more. It is that three factors multiply together in those categories and only in those categories. The deal value is high, the shortlist is short, and the buyer frequently has no prior relationship to fall back on. Where all three hold, failing to appear on a three name shortlist removes you from the entire decision, and a single lost engagement is worth more than a year of the work it would have taken to be on it. Here is how to put a number on your own exposure rather than accept a ranking.

The three factors, and the arithmetic

FactorWhy it multiplies the exposureYour number
Deal valueOne lost engagement in a high value category costs more than the whole remedyAverage first year value of a new client
Shortlist lengthA three name answer excludes everybody else completely, unlike a search results pageHow many suppliers your buyers actually evaluate
Absence of a prior relationshipA buyer with a trusted supplier does not ask an assistant. A buyer without one doesShare of new clients who came with no referral

The arithmetic is deliberately simple, because a complicated model here would be false precision. Take your average first year client value, multiply by the number of new clients a year who arrived without a referral, and that is the pool of revenue that passes through a discovery process you do not control. Then ask what share of that discovery now includes an assistant. You do not need a national statistic for that; you need an estimate you are willing to defend, and the sensitivity is what matters. If the answer is material at 10 per cent, the work is justified without arguing about whether the real figure is 10 or 40.

Why professional services carry more exposure than ecommerce

It is counterintuitive, because consumer shopping is where assistant use is most discussed. But a consumer who does not see your product in an assistant answer can still find it on a marketplace, in a search result, on a shelf or through an ad, and the transaction is small and repeatable. A business buying a legal or accounting engagement runs a short, high stakes, infrequent process, often with a procurement step, and the shortlist is the decision. Removal from the shortlist is removal from the revenue, with no second surface to catch it.

What the readings say about exactly this category

On 22 October 2026 we put a 198 question American buyer bank in 33 batches to the ChatGPT and Gemini product surfaces through a data provider. The United States was named inside the text of every question, because the provider accepts gl, hl and location parameters and ignores all three. Batch 33 names us in the question and is a ceiling measurement, so it is excluded from every figure below.

In 64 blind American readings the engines produced 2,866 citation URLs across 1,143 distinct hosts and named not one American professional services firm. Thirty eight of the 64 readings named no supplier at all. The 26 that did produced 53 namings and every one was a software product: Semrush 14, HubSpot 12, Ahrefs 9, BrightLocal 5, Peec 3, Profound 2, SE Ranking 2, Otterly 2, and Scrunch and Conductor once each and Surfer twice. For a professional practice the exposure is therefore not that a rival is being named instead. It is that the category is being answered in generalities, which means the shortlist slot is unclaimed rather than lost.

That distinction changes the cost of the remedy. Displacing three named incumbents is slow and expensive. Being the first specific, checkable, dated answer in a category where the engine currently names nobody is neither.

The constraint, and the assets available inside it

American professional practices market under conduct rules that are real and that vary. State bar advertising rules restrict outcome and comparative claims for law firms and differ by state. Financial advisers are subject to the SEC marketing rule and to FINRA requirements on communications, testimonials and endorsements. Healthcare marketing is constrained by patient privacy obligations. Section 5 of the FTC Act and the FTC Endorsement Guides apply across all of it, and the Commission's 2024 rule on consumer reviews and testimonials made undisclosed insider and incentivised reviews directly actionable.

What those rules restrict is promises, comparisons and undisclosed endorsements. What they leave entirely available is the publication of a fee position, a specification of what an engagement includes, and a counted figure about your own practice area with its denominator and its date. Those three are the assets the engines quoted elsewhere, and they are the ones most American practices have not published.

How to size and start this quarter

  • Run the arithmetic above with your own three numbers and write down the figure. It is the business case and it takes ten minutes.
  • Take a baseline. Twelve buying questions in your practice area, both engines, United States named in the question text, saved with sources and dates.
  • Count how many of those readings name nobody. Those are the unclaimed slots and they are the cheapest work in the programme.
  • Publish the fee position and the engagement specification, cleared by whoever already clears your advertising.
  • Re-read at ninety days, same questions, same engines, same denominator, reported separately.

If your practice is a law firm, the page structure that answers a client's situation rather than your service list is set out in pages by situation, written for someone in distress. If it is an accounting practice, the demand pattern follows the calendar and that is worked through in tax season leads and advisory clients are bought differently.

Questions about exposure to not being named

Is my industry really the most exposed?

Run the arithmetic rather than accept the ranking. Three numbers you already have will tell you whether the exposure is material for your practice, and the ranking is only a guide to where to look first.

What if assistants name nobody in my category?

That is the better position, because the slot is unclaimed. In our American readings 38 of 64 named no supplier, and taking an unclaimed slot is cheaper than displacing an incumbent.

Can a regulated practice publish enough to be named?

The rules restrict promises and comparisons rather than facts. A dated fee position, an engagement specification and a counted figure about your own practice area are all available and all quotable.

How quickly does this become urgent?

Treat it as a quarterly measurement rather than an emergency. What makes it urgent in a specific practice is a shortlist that is short and a deal value that is high, which is the arithmetic rather than the calendar.

Do I need all five engines?

Start with the two that answer most readily and say which two you read. Five surfaces are sold in this category, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, and reading two of them honestly is a real measurement.

Turning an exposure estimate into a measured position

An exposure figure is a business case and a reading is a position. On 22 October 2026 our American readings named no professional services firm in 64 readings and named nobody at all in 38 of them, which is a position worth knowing before a shortlist forms rather than after. AI Knows Us reads ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews for the buying questions in a practice area, reports each engine separately with its denominator, and keeps the raw answer text so a claim about progress can be audited. In the United States that is the Growth plan at 299 dollars a month with 100 buyer questions watched and 1,600 credits, read on aiknowsus.com/pricing and aiknowsus.com/llms.txt on 22 October 2026.
