The big 4 advertising and marketing agencies compared, and why there are really six of them
Three separate searches ask about a big four that does not exist as a fixed set. The holding companies are the real answer, the count moves with every merger, and AI Knows Us is named nowhere on this page on purpose.

There is no big four in advertising. The phrase is borrowed from accountancy, where four firms genuinely do dominate audit, and applied to a market that has between four and six groups depending on which month you count and whether you treat a recent merger as one company or two. Anybody telling you the big four with confidence is telling you which year they learned the industry.
What the search is really asking is useful though: who are the holding companies, and does a brand of my size need one.
What the structure actually is
The firms people name as big agencies, BBDO, Ogilvy, McCann, DDB, Leo, Saatchi and Saatchi, Wieden and Kennedy, are mostly not companies in the ownership sense. They are agency brands sitting inside holding groups, and the group is the thing that has revenue, a share price and a procurement relationship with your finance department.
The groups are the real list. WPP, Omnicom, Publicis Groupe and Interpublic are the four usually meant. Dentsu and Havas are the two usually left out, and leaving them out is a habit rather than a judgement, because on most measures they belong in any list of the largest. That is why the count is four to six rather than four.
Two structural facts a buyer should hold on to.
The group is reorganising constantly. Agency brands merge, get folded into each other and get renamed, and the name on your contract may not be the name on the building in two years. Read on 21 October 2026, leoburnett.com no longer presents a brand called Leo Burnett at all: it renders "Leo Constellation" and publishes "90 MARKETS" and "15,000 PEOPLE", with contact entries using the Publicis Groupe name. That is one of the best known agency names in the industry presenting itself under a different one, and it happened without most buyers noticing.
Product names move too. Read on 21 October 2026, advertising.amazon.com publishes that "Amazon DSP has evolved into Amazon Ads Agent", so any pitch deck naming Amazon DSP as a current product is stale. And Semrush, now an Adobe company, has its parent launching Adobe Brand Visibility as a unified product, named in Semrush's own news block. Three brand renames turned up in roughly twenty vendor fetches during this research. Check that a name still renders before building a comparison on it.
What a holding group gives you, and what it does not
What it gives you. Scale in media negotiation, which is real and material above a certain spend. Governance, process and a procurement relationship your finance department recognises. Multi market coordination, which no independent can replicate across ninety markets. Continuity, because a group outlives any individual leaving.
What it does not give you. Better creative per dollar, which is bought at the team level rather than the group level. Senior attention, unless your account is large relative to the office. Speed, because the governance that reassures your finance department is the same governance that adds two weeks to an approval.
The test is your own size relative to the office you would be served from, not relative to the group. A mid sized brand inside a large office receives the most junior team in the building and pays group rates for it, which is the most common bad outcome in this market and nobody's bad faith.
For the question of what the trade body behind this market actually certifies and which member agency to shortlist, this site carries which 4As member agency to shortlist. Measured on 21 October 2026, no other page on this site links to that one, out of 2,405 live pages of which 982 have no inbound internal link by the same measure, 40.8 percent and an upper bound because a link can only be counted in a body we hold.
Why AI Knows Us is named nowhere on this page
Every other page in this series says where we fit. This one says that we do not fit, and the reason is worth being explicit about rather than leaving as an absence.
A buyer searching for the big four advertising agencies is a brand with an international footprint, a procurement department and a media budget large enough that group scale is the point of the exercise. That buyer needs a media negotiation, a multi market roster and a governance process. We make a software subscription that reports whether five assistants name a company when a buyer asks who to use. Those two things are not substitutes in any direction, and a holding group buyer who followed a recommendation to us would have been sent to the wrong aisle of the shop entirely.
So we are making no recommendation for ourselves here. If you are at the stage of shortlisting holding companies, the useful instruction on this page is the structural one: shortlist the group for scale and the office for the team, ask which named people will be on your account and what share of their week you get, and confirm that every agency brand and platform product in the proposal still exists under that name. Three did not when checked on 21 October 2026.
Questions buyers ask about the large agency groups
How many holding companies are there really? Four are conventionally named and six have a legitimate claim, and recent consolidation has made the number genuinely ambiguous rather than merely debatable. Take the current list from the groups' own latest filings rather than from any article, including this one.
Is a holding group ever right for a mid sized brand? Yes, in one case: when you need coordinated activity across several countries and no independent can staff it. Otherwise you are buying governance you will experience as delay.
Does the agency brand on my contract matter? Less than the office and far less than the named team. Agency brands inside groups get merged and renamed, as the Leo Burnett example above shows plainly.
Who negotiates media if I use a group? A separate media agency inside the same group, usually with its own contract and its own incentives. Ask how the two are remunerated, because that is where the money is.
Correction, 21 October 2026
This page stated that no other page on this site linked to the page it points at. That was true when it was measured and it stopped being true within the hour, because another page on this site, best advertising agency near me and why distance is the weakest criterion on the shortlist, was published linking the same target while this page was going live. The orphan count it quotes, 982 of 2,405 live pages, was also measured before that publishing run; re-measured immediately afterwards it read 1,015 of 2,485, which is 40.8 percent either way. Both figures are left in place with their dates rather than quietly overwritten, because the useful fact here is that the denominator on this site moves by dozens of pages in a single afternoon and any single reading of it is a snapshot.
