The marketing skills a Canadian business will need in 2027, and which to hire, train or buy

Six capabilities, a verdict on each, the two that are specific to Canada, and the measurement that tells you which one your own team is missing.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026

Six capabilities, and the useful part of the answer is not the list but the verdict on each one: hire it, train it, or buy it. Two of the six are specific to Canada and both are usually treated as nice to have when they are structural. Writing French for a Quebec reader is a capability rather than a vendor relationship. And holding CASL, Competition Act and provincial privacy judgement inside the team is cheaper than renting it, because it touches every asset rather than a project. The other four are national in nature and two of them should be trained rather than hired, because the experienced pool does not exist at any price.

The six, with the verdict

CapabilityVerdictWhy
Reading a measurement and changing a planHire, and pay for itIt makes every other capability in the team productive, and it is genuinely scarce
Writing for one specific buyerHire or retainA different craft from brand voice writing, and the people who do it are usually employed
French written for a Quebec readerHire or retain in CanadaThe Charter of the French Language makes it a requirement for selling pages, and machine output is not adequate for them
CASL, Competition Act and privacy judgementTrain internallyIt touches every asset, so renting it by the hour is both slower and more expensive

Instrumentation and clean dataBuy the tools, train the disciplineThe tools are cheap and the habit of a mandatory source field is what actually works

The two Canadian ones, in detail

  • French for Quebec. Quebec's Charter of the French Language, strengthened by the 2022 amendments, sets requirements for commercial advertising and public communications in the province. For pages meant to sell, French written by somebody who writes for a Quebec reader rather than for France is what performs and what your own team can stand behind. Treat it as a role or a retainer, never as a line on a generalist job description, because that is how it ends up unfilled.
  • Compliance judgement. CASL requires consent, clear sender identification and a working unsubscribe honoured promptly for commercial electronic messages, with the CRTC enforcing. The Competition Act's misleading representations provisions are administered by the Competition Bureau, were amended in 2024, and from June 2025 carry a private right of access to the Competition Tribunal for certain deceptive marketing conduct. Privacy runs through PIPEDA federally, Quebec's Law 25, and the Alberta and British Columbia statutes. Somebody in the team should be able to say which of those touches a given asset without looking it up.

Why the fifth capability has to be trained, with the evidence

On 22 October 2026 we put a 198 question Canadian buyer bank in 33 batches to the ChatGPT and Gemini product surfaces through a data provider, with Canada named inside the text of every question because the provider accepts gl, hl and location parameters and ignores all three. Batch 33 names us in the question and measures a ceiling, excluded from every figure.

In 64 blind Canadian readings the engines produced 2,992 citation URLs across 974 distinct hosts. The hosts they reached for were developers.google.com in 17 readings, support.google.com in 14, torontoseo.com in 13, clutch.co in 12, canadacreate.com in 11, canada.ca in 10, wisemedia.io in 9, semrush.com in 9, competition-bureau.canada.ca in 9, ised-isde.canada.ca in 9, blog.google in 8, www150.statcan.gc.ca in 8 and ottawaseo.com in 7. One entry, ccn.web.tr, is the data provider's own fetch infrastructure rather than a publisher and is excluded from source analysis. Where a supplier was named, software took 48 namings led by Semrush at 16, HubSpot at 12 and Ahrefs at 9, and six Canadian agencies were named 21 times. Thirty three of the 64 readings named nobody at all.

That citation list is the curriculum, and it is not what a content or link building background teaches. A Canadian practitioner who can read it and say what to publish and which hosts to target is doing work that nobody has a decade of, which is why the capability is built rather than bought. The engines also split, with Gemini naming a rival in 17 of its 32 readings against ChatGPT's 13 and ChatGPT running a live search on all 32 against Gemini's 20 of 32, so the person doing this work must report engines separately rather than blend them.

The measurement that tells you which one you are missing

Rather than guessing, run one diagnostic per capability on work your team already produced.

  • Hand them a real report with a problem in it and ask what to stop doing. Tests capability one.
  • Give them one customer transcript and ask for 200 words aimed at that person. Tests capability two.
  • Ask a Quebec reader to assess your current French selling page. Tests capability three.
  • Pick three live assets and ask which statute touches each. Tests capability four.
  • Show them a citation list from your own reading and ask what to publish and where to get cited. Tests capability five.
  • Pull last month's leads and ask what share has a source recorded. Tests capability six.

If the hiring market question is the one you need settled first, the Canadian pools and what each is deep in are compared in the Canadian city with the strongest marketing talent pool. If the fifth capability is the gap, the build or buy decision for it is costed in train your own Canadian team or buy it in.

Questions about Canadian marketing skills for 2027

Which capability should we hire first?

Reading a measurement and changing a plan, because it makes the rest of the team productive and it is genuinely scarce at every level.

Can French be handled by translation software?

For reference material, often. For pages meant to sell into Quebec, French written for a Quebec reader is what performs, and the Charter of the French Language makes it a requirement rather than a preference.

Why train compliance judgement rather than retain a lawyer?

Retain the lawyer for the hard questions and train the team to recognise which assets need one. The judgement touches every asset, so renting all of it is slower and more expensive.

Is there anybody experienced in the assistant citation work?

Very few, because the field is about two years old. Hire for judgement and documentation skill and develop the specifics against a real measurement.

How do I know which capability we are missing?

Run the six diagnostics above on work your team already produced. Each one takes under an hour and the results are specific rather than aspirational.

Giving the fifth capability a real citation list to work from

The one capability on this list that cannot be developed without a measurement is the fifth, because the work is reading what the engines answered and the hosts they cited and deciding what to publish because of it. AI Knows Us reads ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews with Canada and the language named inside the question, records every cited host, reports each engine separately with its denominator, and keeps the raw answer text. Outside the United States and the United Kingdom the cheapest plan that reads all five engines is Growth at 199 dollars a month with 100 buyer questions watched and 1,600 credits, read on aiknowsus.com/pricing and aiknowsus.com/llms.txt on 22 October 2026.
