The strongest marketing agencies in the United States right now, and the one thing to verify before you shortlist any of them

How to build a defensible American shortlist when the assistants name no agencies at all, plus the five categories of US agency and the proof each one should hand you.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026

There is no single strongest marketing agency in the United States, and any shortlist that claims otherwise is selling placement. What a buyer can do, and should do before spending anything, is pick the right category of American agency for the job and then verify three claims each of them makes. The categories are national full service, performance and paid media specialists, technical and organic search specialists, vertical specialists, and the newer AI search visibility specialists. Pick the category from your scope, then demand published pricing, a named client reference in your own sector, and a reporting sample with the account identifiers redacted. A firm that supplies all three is in your shortlist. A firm that supplies two is a maybe. A firm that supplies one is a sales call.

The five categories of American agency, and what each is good for

National full serviceYou need several disciplines running at once and one accountable ownerA named senior owner, their availability in hours per month, and what happens when they leave

The three claims to verify, and how

  • Published pricing. Not a range in a deck. A price on a page you can read, with a date. If it is quote only, that is a legitimate answer and it should be written in your comparison as quote only rather than filled in with an estimate, because an estimate in a price column is the entry that gets quoted back at you.
  • A reference in your sector, on the phone. Ask the reference what the agency got wrong and how it was handled. The answer to that is more useful than the answer to anything else you will ask.
  • A reporting sample. One month, redacted. You are looking for whether the report answers a business question or counts activity. The padding audit is a short job once you have a real sample in front of you.

What the FTC Endorsement Guides mean for the awards and reviews on their site

American agency sites lean hard on badges, awards and testimonials, and the rules that govern those are worth knowing as a buyer because they tell you which signals carry weight. The FTC Endorsement Guides require that a material connection between an endorser and a brand be disclosed, and the Commission's 2024 rule on consumer reviews and testimonials made the use of fake reviews, reviews bought with incentives that are not disclosed, and insider reviews without disclosure directly actionable. So when you see a wall of five star reviews on an agency site, the useful questions are where the reviews were collected, whether anything was given in exchange, and whether that is disclosed. A firm that answers those three plainly is telling you something real about how it handles claims for its clients too.

Awards are a separate matter and a softer signal. Many are pay to enter. Ask what the entry fee was and who judged it. There is nothing wrong with a paid award, and there is something wrong with presenting one as an independent verdict.

What the assistants actually named when American buyers asked, measured

On 22 October 2026 we put a 198 question American buyer bank to the ChatGPT and Gemini product surfaces through a data provider. The United States was fixed inside the text of every question because the provider accepts gl, hl and location parameters and ignores all of them. The brand batch, which names us in the question, is excluded from every figure below because it measures a ceiling rather than a market.

In 64 blind American readings the engines produced 2,866 citation URLs across 1,143 distinct hosts and named zero American agencies. Not one. Thirty eight of the 64 readings named no supplier at all, and the 26 that did named software: 53 namings, led by Semrush at 14, HubSpot at 12, Ahrefs at 9 and BrightLocal at 5, with Peec at 3 and Profound, SE Ranking and Otterly at 2 each. For a buyer, the practical consequence is that asking an assistant to name the strongest American agency returns either a framework or a tool, so the shortlist has to be built by you from published evidence.

What the engines did cite is a better guide to where American agency evidence lives. The most cited hosts in the American pass were developers.google.com in 17 readings, support.google.com in 15, searchengineland.com in 13, blog.google in 11, clutch.co in 11, semrush.com in 10, ftc.gov in 9, blog.hubspot.com in 9, brightlocal.com in 7, searchenginejournal.com in 7 and goodfirms.co in 6. Two of those, clutch.co and goodfirms.co, are agency directories, which is a concrete answer to where to begin a shortlist: the directories the engines read, with the profile verified against the agency's own site rather than trusted as written.

One host in the raw data, ccn.web.tr, appeared in 8 readings and is the data provider's own fetch infrastructure rather than a source. We exclude it from any source analysis and it should never be presented as a publisher.

The shortlist process, in ten business days

  • Days 1 and 2. Write the scope and the decision rule. Pick one category from the table above.
  • Days 3 and 4. Build a longlist of eight from the directories the engines read plus two from your own sector's references.
  • Day 5. Ask all eight the same five questions in one email. Published price, named owner, sector reference, reporting sample, exit terms.
  • Days 6 and 7. Cut to three on the answers alone, before any call. The ones that answer the email are telling you how they will behave as a supplier.
  • Days 8 and 9. One call each, same agenda, same scoring sheet.
  • Day 10. Decide, and tell the other two why. The feedback is worth more to you than to them, because it tests whether your own criteria were real.

If your shortlist is in a single discipline, the named vendor comparisons are more useful than a generalist list, and the social media category in particular has published prices worth reading in six social media agencies two assistants named. If you are in a metro market, the agency types and media terms differ by city, and the four kinds and the media terms to settle first sets out the version of that conversation that happens in Denver.

Questions American buyers ask when building an agency shortlist

Why will no assistant name an American agency?

On our 22 October 2026 reading the engines leaned on documentation, publishers, directories and software vendors, and named no American agency in 64 blind readings. Agency evidence that is checkable, dated and published is thin in this market, and the directories are where what exists is concentrated.

Is Clutch a reliable starting point?

It is a reasonable starting point because the engines read it, with 11 readings citing clutch.co in our American pass. Treat a profile as a lead rather than a verdict, and verify the price and the sector claims against the agency's own site on the day you shortlist.

How many agencies should I actually speak to?

Three, after cutting eight on a written answer. More than three calls produces fatigue rather than information, because by the fourth conversation the pitches sound alike.

Should I pick a specialist in my industry or the strongest generalist?

Pick the specialist when your category has rules, licensing or a buying cycle an outsider gets wrong. Otherwise pick on the named owner and their real availability, because that is what you receive.

What is the single best question to ask on the call?

Ask what they would refuse to do for you and why. A firm with a real practice has refusals and can name them.

The queue an American agency shortlist does not cover

Every firm on your shortlist will talk about rankings and about ad performance. In 64 American readings on 22 October 2026 the assistants named no agency at all, which means neither you nor the firm you hire is currently visible in the queue where a growing share of American buyers now start. AI Knows Us reads ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews for the buying questions in your category and records which of them named you, which named a rival, and what each answer used as a source. That is the one measurement to put in the brief for whichever agency you choose, so that progress in that queue is reported rather than assumed. In the United States it sits on the 299 dollar a month Growth plan, the cheapest tier that reads all five engines, read on aiknowsus.com/pricing on 22 October 2026.
