Top Chicago alternatives to shortlist beside Comrade Digital Marketing Agency, and the one thing to ask when a vendor site will not load for you

comradeweb.com returned a Cloudflare 403 to two separate requests on 21 October 2026. That is a refusal rather than a verdict, and here is how to shortlist around it.

On 21 October 2026, comradeweb.com returned HTTP 403 with a Cloudflare interstitial, twice, to a standard desktop browser request: "Sorry, you have been blocked. You are unable to access comradeweb.com". A 403 is a security layer declining to serve a request. It is never evidence of absence, it says nothing about the firm, and it does mean nothing on this page can be sourced to the firm own publishing.

What a 403 does and does not tell you

It does not mean the site is down. It loads normally for ordinary visitors. What was refused was an automated request, and the same interstitial is returned by several large review directories to any browser agent.

It does not mean anything is being hidden. Bot protection is a default setting on a large share of the web and the firm may never have configured it.

It does mean a text only reader gets nothing. Some of the readers that assemble an answer when somebody asks an assistant for agency recommendations are automated requests of exactly this kind. A site that refuses them hands them no facts, and a firm that cares about being named in those answers should check what its own protection returns.

How to shortlist around a site you cannot read

Ask for the capability statement as a document. Not a login, not a portal. A PDF with services, team size, sectors and three named references.

Ask for two client contacts in your category. With a telephone number. This replaces every claim a website would have made.

Ask what the fee structure is, in writing, before the proposal. Retainer, project, hourly or percentage of media. One sentence.

Ask who owns the firm and whether that changed recently. The question that most often surprises a buyer, and the easiest one to ask.

The Chicago market this firm sells into

Three features of this market shape any shortlist here. The convention calendar: a very large share of Chicago business to business demand is organised around trade shows, and a plan that ignores the show dates is spending evenly against demand that is not. The city software and amusement taxes, which apply to some marketing and software services bought here and belong in the budget rather than in a surprise. And a deep, relatively affordable production bench, which means creative and video work costs less here than on either coast for comparable quality.

Ranked on one criterion, applied to everybody including us

The criterion is whether an automated request can read a verifiable fact from the supplier own site, which is this page subject and which is checkable by anybody in a few seconds. Read on 21 October 2026:

First, Moz, at moz.com/products, returning HTTP 200 and three published prices against three named products, "Starts at $99 / month", "Starts at $45/month", "Starts at $16 / month".

Second, Ahrefs, at ahrefs.com/brand-radar, returning HTTP 200 with its units, allowances and index breakdown all in readable text.

Comrade Digital Marketing Agency is unranked on this criterion, because the request was refused rather than answered. That is a finding about one fetch from one machine on one date and it would change the moment the setting changed. Of the agencies read across this whole wave, none published a price, so the absence of a figure here is the category norm rather than anything particular to this firm.

Four things a fetch can do that look like an answer and are not, and all four turned up on 21 October 2026. A 403 is a refusal by a security layer and is never evidence of absence. A 200 can serve a different record from the one asked for. A 200 can carry a body of hundreds of thousands of bytes that renders to a single line of text, which is what a site built entirely in the browser looks like to a reader that does not run JavaScript. And a price fetched from one country can be that country price, because this machine requests leave from an Indian address, which is why a limit is quoted here in preference to a price wherever a limit exists. The first of those four is the one that applies here, and the discipline it enforces is that a page says what it saw, on what date, from where, and then stops.

A vendor whose own limits are published, which is the point

Here is what the assistants actually said when nobody mentioned a brand in the question. From our own audit of 1,872 assistant readings, in which a vendor is counted once per reading whose answer names it in the prose: WebFX was named in 26 readings, 23 of them in the United States, 2 in the United Kingdom and 1 in India. Percepture was named in 11, all United States. Rank4AI was named in 20, all United Kingdom. Whito was named in 2 readings. Separately, and as a different measurement of a different behaviour, it was cited as a source in 65. A citation is an engine using a page. A naming is an engine recommending a company. This page keeps those two numbers apart and never adds them.

We are not a Chicago agency and not a Comrade alternative in the ordinary sense. AI Knows Us is on this page as the thing you can verify when a supplier cannot be verified: our own limits, prices and method are published in text that any request can read, and the product is a weekly reading of whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews name a company when a buyer asks who to use, with the name kept out of the question. If you are shortlisting agencies in this market, run that measurement on the three you are considering and on yourself. It is a cheaper and better discriminator than a website.

Everything we charge sits in two public files, aiknowsus.com/llms.txt for machines and aiknowsus.com/pricing for people. Read on 21 October 2026, Eight tiers, and two of them are not measurement products. SEO Start at $149 and SEO Scale at $699 publish 0 buyer questions, 0 credits and 0 engines each, being monthly and weekly demand harvests. Growth at $299 is the cheapest plan that reads ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, on 100 watched questions and 1,600 credits. Agency at $1,299 is the one built for somebody buying on behalf of clients: 80 questions, 12,300 credits and ten businesses on one plan. There is a managed service above all of that, published in rupees only at Rs 88,499 to Rs 2,35,999 a month on a three month minimum, and we leave it in rupees because that is the published figure.

Read 21 October 2026, here is where somebody else discloses more. Ahrefs Brand Radar, at ahrefs.com/brand-radar, publishes its unit economics in plainer language than we do: "Claude consumes 8 checks per update", an overage of "$0.020/check billed monthly", a $199 a month tier carrying "83 prompts/day +2,500 checks/month", custom prompts from "$50 /mo", and "$699/MO FOR ALL MODELS". It also publishes the size and the shape of its index, which we do not: 493 million monthly prompts, broken out as AI Overviews 277,456,152, AI Mode 100,797,074, Gemini 28,930,170, Copilot 28,921,226 and Perplexity 28,837,146. Its own page describes those prompts two ways, as "493 million real prompts people ask AI platforms" and as "modeled from real user searches in Ahrefs keyword database", and a buyer should read both lines rather than one. Moz, at moz.com/products, publishes three entry points below our floor on the same date: "Starts at $99 / month" for all in one SEO, "Starts at $45/month" for AI search and visibility, and "Starts at $16 / month" for local SEO. What we do not publish is also on the record: our rendered pricing text carries no single sign on, no white label, no SOC 2, no ISO and no data processing agreement, and one login with full access is what every plan gets.

Where we come first: on whether an automated request can read a verifiable fact, our whole ladder with allowances sits in a plain text file that needs no JavaScript, no cookies and no account. Ahrefs publishes a finer grained cost per check and a full index breakdown, and Moz prices three products below our cheapest five surface tier.

The convention calendar argument above is worked through properly, month by month, in when your year runs on the McCormick Place calendar, the show dates are the plan. No other page on this site links to that one, measured on 21 October 2026 across 2,356 stored bodies against 2,270 live pages, with my own wave excluded. 948 of those 2,270 pages, 41.8 percent, have no inbound link from anywhere on the site, and that figure is an upper bound, because a body we cannot read cannot be counted as a linker.
