Vimeo SEO: the privacy setting, the watch page on your own site, and the markup that gets a Vimeo video into Google
How a Vimeo video gets found in search, what Vimeo already does for you, and the three things you still have to do on your own website.

Vimeo SEO is two jobs. The first is Vimeo's own page for your video, and Vimeo handles most of it for you: its blog says its search enhancements, including structured data sent to Google, apply automatically to every video set to public or unlisted. The second job is the page on your own website where the video is embedded, and that one is yours. Google's video documentation (last updated 18 December 2025, read 22 October 2026) says it may index an embedded video both on your page and on the host's page, so a well built page on your site can win the video result for you instead of Vimeo's copy. The rest of this guide covers the privacy setting, the watch page, the markup and the text that make that happen.
Start with the privacy setting, because it decides everything else
Vimeo's post on its video SEO enhancements is direct about the condition: the enhancements are "already live (for videos marked as 'public' or 'unlisted')", and to benefit "all you need to do is make sure your videos are listed as public or unlisted". Vimeo says its technology then handles the rest, such as making sure the video is indexable and the metadata is set.
So the first decision is the privacy setting on each video:
- Public when you want the video found on Vimeo and in Google, for example a product demo, a talk or a showreel.
- Unlisted when you want people with the link, or visitors to your site, to watch it, but you do not want it promoted on Vimeo itself.
- Private or password protected for internal training, client review copies and anything you do not want a search engine to show. Treat these as out of search.
Pick the setting video by video. A business library usually mixes all three, and the mistake is leaving a marketing video on a private setting left over from the review stage.
Write the title, description and chapters for the search, not the edit suite
The file name from the edit ("final_v3_cut") is not a title. Vimeo's own advice is that the title shows beside your thumbnail in search results, so keep it descriptive and use the words your audience searches for. A catchy name is fine if the plain description sits next to it.
Write a description of one or two short paragraphs: what the video shows, who it is for and the main terms a viewer would use. Name the product, the place or the people in it if those are what people search for.
Add chapters if your plan includes them. Vimeo's blog notes that Google reviews the chapter titles as well as the video title, so a chapter called "How to reset the filter" can surface the exact part of a ten minute video someone needs. Google's own documentation says it prioritises key moments that the publisher sets, so labelled chapters are worth the five minutes.
Build a watch page on your own site
This is the step most Vimeo users skip. Google's video guide says that to be eligible for video features such as video results, Video mode and key moments, you should create a dedicated watch page for each video where it makes sense for your business. A watch page is one whose main purpose is to show that single video: a video landing page, an event clip page, a product demo page.
Google is equally clear about what is not a watch page: a blog post that reviews an embedded video, a product page with a 360 video, or a category page listing many videos of equal weight. Those pages can still show as text results, and in Google Images with a video badge, but they will not carry the full video result.
Google lists the indexing requirements plainly:
- The watch page must be indexed, and it must be performing well in Search before its video is considered.
- The video must be embedded on the watch page and not hidden behind other elements.
- The video must have a valid thumbnail at a stable URL.
- The page needs a title and description unique to that video.
Embed the Vimeo player with a normal iframe that is present when the page loads. Google says it finds videos in video, embed, iframe and object elements, and that you should not rely on a click, swipe or typing to load the video. A video that only appears after someone presses a "watch now" button may never be seen.
Add VideoObject structured data to the watch page
Vimeo sends structured data for its own pages. For your page, Google still recommends you provide it yourself when you use a third-party player, and says you may also list those pages in a video sitemap. The Vimeo player address goes in embedUrl. Here is a minimal example for a page on your site; replace the names, dates, IDs and image with your own.
<script type="application/ld+json">
{ "@context": "https://schema.org", "@type": "VideoObject", "name": "How to reset the water filter on the X200", "description": "A four minute walkthrough of resetting the X200 filter light, with the part number for the replacement cartridge.", "thumbnailUrl": "https://www.example.com/images/x200-filter-reset.jpg", "uploadDate": "2026-10-01", "duration": "PT4M12S", "embedUrl": "https://player.vimeo.com/video/123456789"
}
</script>
Google asks that the name, description and thumbnail are unique for each video and consistent with the video itself and with any other metadata you give. If you set a thumbnail in both a sitemap and structured data, use the same image URL in both. Thumbnails must be at least 60 by 30 pixels, and Googlebot has to be able to fetch them, so do not block the image folder in robots.txt.
To mark the chapters yourself, Google supports Clip structured data with a start time, an end time and a label for each segment, in every language where Search is available. Validate the markup before you move on, then watch the video rich result report in Search Console once Google has crawled the page. Our guide to schema markup checkers explains how to read what it reports.
Put the words on the page
A search engine reads text far better than it watches video. Under the player, add a short summary, the chapter list and, ideally, a cleaned up transcript. Vimeo's own SEO advice includes adding a transcript to help search engines understand the video, and the same text makes the page useful to someone who cannot play sound at work.
The transcript also gives the page enough substance to rank as a page, which matters because Google wants the watch page itself performing well before it indexes the video.
Vimeo or YouTube for search: the honest trade
| Question | Vimeo | YouTube |
|---|---|---|
| Where the viewer lands | Usually your site, when your watch page holds the result | Often YouTube itself |
| Discovery inside the platform | Smaller audience searching on the platform | A very large search engine of its own |
| Ads and suggested videos around yours | A clean player you control | Recommendations and ads you do not choose |
| Best fit | Product, training and brand video meant to bring people to your site | Reach and audience building on the platform |
Many businesses use both: YouTube for reach, Vimeo on the website pages that sell. If YouTube is part of your plan, our guide to YouTube video SEO and its three surfaces covers how that platform ranks video.
Check it worked in Search Console
Once the watch page is live and marked up, inspect the URL in Search Console and request indexing. Search Console has a video indexing report that shows which watch pages have a video Google indexed and the reasons others were not. A separate video rich result report flags problems in your VideoObject markup, and the Performance report has a Videos filter. Fix the stated reason, then validate the fix in the same report.
Questions about Vimeo SEO
Do Vimeo videos show up in Google?
Yes. Vimeo says its enhancements apply to public and unlisted videos, and Google's documentation says it may index an embedded Vimeo video both on your page and on Vimeo's own page.
Does an unlisted Vimeo video get indexed?
Vimeo's enhancements cover unlisted videos as well as public ones. Use private or password settings for anything that must stay out of search.
Is Vimeo or YouTube better for SEO?
YouTube brings more discovery on its own platform. Vimeo suits videos whose job is to send people to your own pages, because a watch page on your site can hold the result.
Do I need a video sitemap for Vimeo videos?
It is optional. Google accepts structured data, a video sitemap or Open Graph tags. Structured data on each watch page is the usual starting point, and a sitemap helps on a large library.
Why is my Vimeo video not showing as a video result?
The common causes are a page where the video is not the main content, a video that loads only after a click, an unindexed or weak watch page, or a thumbnail Googlebot cannot fetch. The video indexing report in Search Console names the reason.
The answer that never shows the video at all
Everything above helps a person who searches Google and sees a thumbnail. A growing number of people now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity the same question, "how do I reset the X200 filter" or "which company makes good onboarding videos", and get a written answer with a few sources. Those assistants read the transcript and the summary under your player, not the video. If you want to know whether your watch pages are the ones they quote, AI Knows Us asks the assistants your viewers' questions and shows which sources each answer used.
