Webmaster tools compared, Google against Bing against Yandex, and which ones you actually need

Three search engines publish a free console that reports what they did with your site. They are not interchangeable, two of them are worth the twenty minutes, and one of them is only worth it if you have a specific reason. Here is how to decide.

The phrase webmaster tools is a leftover. Google renamed its product Search Console in 2015 and the old name still gets typed, which is why a search for it lands on a page like this one. All three consoles described here are free and none of them is a third-party tool.

The criterion on this page, applied to everybody including us. A console earns its twenty minutes of setup if it reports first-party data about your site from a surface that actually sends you people. Rank on that, not on features, because every one of these is free and the only cost is attention.

The three consoles, and what each one is first-party about

ConsoleWhat only it can tell youWorth setting up?
Google Search ConsoleWhich of your pages Google indexed and why it declined the rest, the queries each page appeared for, and your position and click-through rate per query, with sixteen months of history. Also the Core Web Vitals field data for your own URLs, which is real user data rather than a lab run.Always, and first. No third-party tool can substitute for it, because the data is Google's own record of its own behaviour on your site.
Bing Webmaster ToolsBing's index coverage and query data for your site. It also matters because of what Bing feeds: Microsoft Copilot sits on Bing's index, so this is the one console that touches an assistant's retrieval layer directly, and it reports your own citation data there at no cost.Yes, for everybody, and the Copilot angle makes it a stronger recommendation in 2026 than it was two years ago.
Yandex WebmasterYandex's index coverage and query data. Relevant if you have Russian-language pages or real traffic from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan or Turkey.Only if that describes you. Otherwise it is twenty minutes spent on an engine that sends you nobody.

So the ranking, on the stated criterion

Google Search Console first, by a distance, and it is free. It is the only source of observed data about how a search engine treated your pages, and every paid SEO tool you will be sold estimates part of what it reports directly. If you do one thing on this page, verify your property there.

Bing Webmaster Tools second, and the case for it is stronger than its market share suggests. Bing's own free report tells you which of your pages Copilot cites, which is a thing you otherwise have to buy from a vendor.

Yandex Webmaster third, conditionally. For a site with no Russian-language content and no traffic from that region, the honest recommendation is to skip it.

No third-party tool is ranked on this page, because none of them is a webmaster console and none can produce first-party data. That is not a dismissal: a crawler and a keyword index answer questions these three do not.

The four things to do in the first hour of Search Console

Verify the domain property, not just the URL prefix. A domain property covers every subdomain and protocol, which is the difference between a complete picture and a confusing one.

Submit the sitemap and then read what it says about the sitemap, not just whether it was accepted. The discrepancy between submitted and indexed is the first real finding on most sites.

Read the page indexing report by reason, not by number. Each reason is a different problem and the counts are meaningless together.

Set the performance report to compare the last three months with the previous three, filtered to queries rather than pages. That single view answers most of the questions people buy a tool for.

The surface none of the three consoles covers

These consoles report what a search engine did. They do not report what an assistant said, and that is a different thing: when somebody asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Google's AI Overviews who they should use, the assistant composes an answer and names some businesses. Bing's console is the partial exception and the exception is worth being precise about, because it tells you which of your pages Copilot cited, which is not the same as whether your business was named as the recommendation.

AI Knows Us sells that second measurement and nothing else, and it is not a webmaster tool and never will be, because a webmaster tool is something an engine publishes about your property and this is a measurement of an answer that was never stored anywhere. What we do is put your buyer's question to all five apps on a schedule and record which businesses were named. From the rendered text of our pricing page, read 21 October 2026: "One credit is one buyer question, asked on one AI app, once", "Most checks use one credit", "A Claude check uses 3, because Claude costs us more to run". From our llms.txt the same day: SEO Start at $149 a month watches 0 buyer questions on 0 engines, so it is a demand-harvest tier rather than an engine watch, and Growth at $299 with 100 buyer questions and 1,200 scheduled answers a month is the cheapest plan that reads all five surfaces.

Where the free consoles beat us, and it needs saying on a page about free tools. Bing Webmaster Tools gives you your own Copilot citation data for nothing, and we do not read Copilot at all. If Copilot is the surface you care about, the free console is the whole answer and we are not part of it. Ahrefs Brand Radar, read 21 October 2026, covers ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude, and publishes "1 check per platform, location and update" at "$0.020/check" with "Claude consumes 8 checks per update". It reads two surfaces we do not.

For the four free tools Google itself publishes beyond the console, and how they compare with the paid trackers built on top of them: Google SERP tools compared, Google's own four free tools against the third party trackers. On 21 October 2026 we read 2,411 page bodies on this site against 2,325 live pages and 971 of them, 41.8 percent, carried no inbound link from any body we could read, which is an upper bound rather than a count. We measured that target specifically: no other page on this site links to that one.

Questions about webmaster tools

Is Google Webmaster Tools the same as Search Console?

Yes. It was renamed in 2015 and the data and the login are the same product. If a page is still calling it Webmaster Tools, check how old the rest of the page is.

Do I need Bing Webmaster Tools if I get no Bing traffic?

It is still worth the twenty minutes, because Copilot retrieval sits on that index and the console reports your own citation data there free. That reason did not exist a few years ago.

Does verifying with one console affect another?

No. Each engine verifies separately, usually by a DNS record or an HTML file, and you can keep all three verification methods in place at once.

Should I use a third-party tool instead?

Not instead. A third-party tool cannot produce first-party data, and these consoles cannot crawl your site or show you a competitor. They answer different questions and the consoles are the ones that cost nothing.
