What a marketing agency retainer costs a month in Australia, and the free register check to run before you pay anyone
The four contract lines that move the number, the public register that verifies a supplier at no cost, and what 64 blind AI readings named for this market.
Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026
An Australian retainer is quoted monthly in Australian dollars and the number is set by four contract lines rather than by the tier name on the proposal. Who actually does the work, how much of it is routed offshore, whether the price is inclusive or exclusive of GST, and how long the notice period runs. Fix all four and two quotes become comparable. Leave one open and you are comparing labels.
We have not run an Australian retainer survey, so this page prints no median. What it gives instead is the four lines, a free verification step most buyers never take, and a first party reading of what the assistants named when an Australian buyer asked who to hire on 22 October 2026.
The free check that comes before the price
Before you negotiate a fee, check the people. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission keeps public registers for exactly this, and its own page says why. Read on asic.gov.au on 22 October 2026, in ASIC's words it keeps registers of people and organisations that are disqualified or banned from roles in corporations, financial services or the credit industry, and it advises directly that it is a good idea to check people and organisations before you deal with them.
The search is free and covers six registers at once. In ASIC's own description, you can search 6 ASIC registers at once using its Banned and Disqualified search, and the result tells you about people and organisations who are not allowed to be a company director, audit self managed superannuation funds, or work in the Australian financial services or credit industry. There is also a list of banned and disqualified organisations which ASIC says is short enough to scroll through.
And it has a documented blind spot worth knowing. ASIC keeps a separate court enforceable undertakings register, which it describes as a legal agreement between a person or organisation and ASIC containing one or more commitments, accepted to address breaches of the law. ASIC states that people who give one will not always appear on the banned and disqualified registers. So the thorough version of this check is both searches rather than one. The Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations also keeps its own list, and ASIC says those people will not appear when you use its search.
The four lines that move the number
- Who does the work. Named people, their seniority, and the hours each one puts in per month. A retainer naming nobody can be staffed by anybody, and the supplier decides.
- How much leaves Australia. Offshore delivery is normal and not a problem on its own. Not knowing is the problem. Ask what share of the monthly hours sit outside Australia and who the local contact escalates to.
- GST, in or out. Ask for the quote both ways. A proposal reading $8,000 a month is $8,800 with GST, and a finance team that approved the first figure will query the second every month.
- Notice. A three month notice period on a twelve month term is a fifteen month commitment. Price the exit at the same time as the entry.
What the assistants named for Australia, measured
On 22 October 2026 we put 33 batches of buying questions to ChatGPT and Gemini with Australia written into the text of every question. The market had to go in the prompt because the search interface we use accepts a country parameter, a language parameter and a location parameter, returns HTTP 200 for each, and ignores all three. The snapshot taken that evening holds 64 blind readings, 32 on each engine, with the brand batch excluded.
The Australian agencies named unprompted were Online Marketing Gurus in 12 readings, Rocket Agency in 8, StudioHawk in 8, Prosperity Media in 8, Sparro in 3 and King Kong in 3. The tools named were Semrush in 14, Ahrefs in 12, HubSpot in 11, Otterly in 7, Peec in 4, BrightLocal in 3, Profound in 2, and Scrunch, SE Ranking and Rankscale in 1 each.
In 28 of the 64 readings no business was named at all. 16 of ChatGPT's 32 and 12 of Gemini's 32. Read that against a retainer quote. The engines answer the shortlist question with a cluster of four to six firms in a clear majority of readings, and with nothing in rather more than four in ten. Neither outcome is about price. An Australian agency that is named is not named for being cheap, and an absent one does not become present by discounting.
What to put in the proposal so two quotes can be compared
Ask each supplier to restate the same five rows in Australian dollars with GST shown separately. Deliverables as countable units rather than adjectives. Pages written and published per month. Hours by named role. The reporting you receive and on what date. And who holds the Google Ads account, the analytics property, the domain and the content files if the relationship ends. Our page on what is inside Australian packages and how to compare two quotes sets out the tier by tier comparison grid, and our dated survey of published agency fees shows what a price table looks like when every figure has a source behind it.
Questions Australian buyers ask about agency retainers
Is a Sydney retainer dearer than a regional one
Usually, and the gap is overhead rather than skill. The question worth asking is which parts of the scope genuinely need somebody in your city, which for most of the work is none of it.
Should the retainer include media spend
Separate lines and separate invoices where possible. A blended figure hides whether a rising bill is more work or more media, and it makes the month you pause advertising look like a month the agency stopped.
What is a fair first commitment
A fixed scope audit before any retainer. You then choose a supplier on work you have read rather than on a pitch, and the audit is worth having even if you hire nobody.
Does an ABN on the quote matter
Ask for it and check it, along with the GST registration status. It is a two minute check and it is the kind of administrative gap that causes finance delays later.
How do I hold a retainer to a number
Agree the leading indicators at signing. Pages published, impressions and average position from Search Console, cost per enquiry by channel, and a dated reading of what the assistants say about your category. Three of those four move inside a quarter.
The line an Australian retainer never specifies
Every item in this page can be written into a contract and audited. The one thing almost no Australian retainer specifies is whether the work changed what a machine says about you, and in this market that is where the room is. Across 64 blind readings taken on 22 October 2026, two assistants named six Australian agencies and named nobody at all in 28 of the 64, while reaching 66 distinct Australian government hosts 139 times. So a buyer paying a retainer partly to be the name they hear about is paying into a channel nobody is reporting on. Add one clause asking for a dated reading of a fixed question list at the start of the term and another at the end, delivered as files rather than as a slide. AI Knows Us produces that across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, and its Growth plan is $199 a month for 100 questions outside the United States and the United Kingdom, read from aiknowsus.com on 22 October 2026. Our own entry in that Australian reading is zero namings and zero citations, which is what an honest baseline looks like before anybody has done the work.
