What a marketing agency retainer costs a month in Singapore, and the four lines that decide the number
One published Singapore price you can check today, the four contract lines that move a retainer, and what 64 blind AI readings named when a buyer here asked for an agency.

A retainer in Singapore is quoted monthly in Singapore dollars, and the number is set by four contract lines rather than by the tier name on the proposal. Those lines are who actually does the work, how much of it leaves the country, whether the price is quoted with or without the 9 per cent GST, and how long the notice period runs. Settle all four and two quotes become comparable. Leave any one open and you are comparing a label against a label.
We have not run a Singapore retainer survey of our own, so this page does not print a median. What it gives you instead is the one Singapore price in this market that is published with a date, the four lines to fix in writing, and a first party reading of what AI assistants named when a buyer in Singapore asked them to recommend an agency on 22 October 2026.
The one published Singapore price a buyer can check in five minutes
The Advertising Standards Authority of Singapore publishes what it charges to review a piece of ad copy before it runs. Read on asas.org.sg on 22 October 2026, the fees are a normal service inside 20 working days at S$600 for a member of AAMS, AMOS or DMAS and S$1,200 for a non member, and an express service inside 10 working days at S$700 for a member and S$1,400 for a non member. With GST those become S$654, S$1,308, S$763 and S$1,526. ASAS reviews the advertisement only once payment is received, and the turnaround is counted from the day of payment.
That matters to a retainer conversation for two reasons. It is a real Singapore number in Singapore dollars that your agency can be asked to budget against, and it tells you what membership of an industry body is actually worth here in cash terms. The gap between the member and non member express fee is S$763 on one review. ASAS also states plainly that it is not intended to be a clearing house for the approval of all advertising, so pre clearance is a tool for the risky piece, not a standing line item.
The four lines that move the number
- Who does the work. Ask for named people, their seniority and the hours each one puts in per month. A retainer that names no individual is a retainer that can be staffed by anybody, and the supplier decides who.
- How much leaves Singapore. Regional delivery out of Kuala Lumpur, Manila or Ho Chi Minh City is normal and is not a problem on its own. Not knowing is the problem. Ask what percentage of the monthly hours sit outside Singapore and who the client facing contact escalates to at 9pm local time.
- GST, in or out. Ask for the quote both ways. A proposal reading S$8,000 a month is S$8,720 with GST, and a finance team that approved the first number will query the second every month for a year.
- Notice. A three month notice period on a twelve month term is a fifteen month commitment. Price the exit at the same time as the entry.
What to put in the proposal so two quotes can be compared
Ask each supplier to restate the same five rows in its own proposal, in Singapore dollars, with GST shown separately. Deliverables as countable units, not adjectives. Pages written and published per month. Hours by named role. The reporting you receive and on what date. Who holds the Google Ads account, the analytics property, the domain and the content files if the relationship ends. Our guide to published agency fees with the source behind each one shows what a dated price survey looks like when the figures are attached to documents rather than to opinion, and it is a useful template for the questions to put to a Singapore shortlist.
What the assistants named when a Singapore buyer asked, and why that changes the price question
On 22 October 2026 we ran a blind audit for Singapore on ChatGPT and Gemini. 64 usable blind readings, 32 on ChatGPT and 32 on Gemini. The market was fixed inside the question itself, because the search API we use accepts a country, a language and a location parameter and ignores all of them, so the only reliable way to ask a Singapore question is to write Singapore into the prompt.
Across those 64 readings the agencies the engines named without being prompted were First Page in 17, MediaOne in 12, Impossible Marketing in 11, OOm in 10 and Clickr in 2. The tools named were Semrush in 13 and HubSpot in 12, then Ahrefs in 9. In 26 of the 64 readings no business was named at all.
Read that against a retainer quote. The engines answer the shortlist question with a short list of the same few firms in a clear majority of readings, and with nothing in about four readings in ten. Neither outcome is about price. A Singapore agency that is named is not named because it is cheap, and an agency that is absent does not become present by discounting. If you are paying a retainer partly to be the firm a buyer hears about, ask the supplier which of those two buckets your brand currently sits in and how it knows.
Questions Singapore buyers ask about agency retainers
Is a Singapore retainer more expensive than a Malaysian or Philippine one
For the same scope, usually yes, and the gap is labour cost rather than skill. The decision worth making is which parts of the scope genuinely need somebody in Singapore. Local market judgement, regulated copy and anything touching a Singapore customer list usually does. Technical build work and reporting often does not.
Should the retainer include media spend
Keep them on separate lines and separate invoices if you can. A single blended number hides whether a rising bill is more work or more media, and it makes the month you pause advertising look like a month the agency stopped working.
What is a fair first commitment
Buy a fixed scope audit before any retainer. You are then choosing a supplier on work you have read rather than on a pitch deck, and the audit is worth having even if you hire nobody.
Does GST registration of the supplier matter
For input tax recovery it does, so ask for the GST registration number on the proposal and check it. For everything else, the registration tells you about the supplier's turnover and nothing about the quality of the work.
How do I hold a retainer to a number when the work is slow to show
Agree the leading indicators at signing. Pages published, impressions and average position from Search Console, cost per enquiry by channel, and a dated reading of what assistants say when somebody asks your category question. Three of those four move inside a quarter.
The line most Singapore retainers do not contain
Every item above is something a buyer can audit in a contract. The one thing a Singapore retainer almost never specifies is whether the work changed what an assistant says about you, and on this evidence that is the gap worth pricing. In 64 blind readings taken for Singapore on 22 October 2026 the engines named six local agencies repeatedly and named nobody at all in 26 of them, which means the answer a Singapore buyer gets is still being written. Measuring it is a separate purchase from the retainer: AI Knows Us watches a fixed list of your buyers' questions across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews and shows which sources each answer leaned on, and its Growth plan is $199 a month for 100 questions outside the United States and the United Kingdom, read from aiknowsus.com on 22 October 2026. If you are already paying a Singapore retainer, that reading is the thing to put in front of the supplier at the next review.
