What a UAE marketing agency retainer buys each month, and how to read the AED quote

Three quotes for the same brief will differ by a multiple, and the difference is almost never the quality of the work. Here is how to make them comparable.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026

Ask three UAE agencies to price the same monthly brief and you will get three very different dirham numbers. That is not a market failure, it is a scoping failure, and it is fixable in an afternoon. The quotes differ because each supplier has made different assumptions about seven things, and until those are written down no comparison means anything.

The seven assumptions behind every retainer number

  1. Output count. How many pages, posts, creatives or campaigns per month. A quote with no count is an hourly arrangement wearing a monthly price.
  2. Who writes. A senior specialist, a junior with a template, or a subcontractor. This is the single largest swing in the number.
  3. Language. English only, or Arabic as well. Arabic written for an Arabic reader is a different job from translation and should be priced as one.
  4. Creative production. Design, photography, video. In the fee or outside it.
  5. Who deploys. If their developer ships changes to your site, that is in the fee. If yours does, the fee is lower and your calendar is the constraint.
  6. Paid media management. Included, excluded, or charged as a percentage of spend.
  7. Reporting. A dashboard, or a monthly reading somebody has interpreted. These cost different amounts and are worth different amounts.

Send all seven as a one page scope and ask each supplier to price against it. The spread normally collapses, and the remaining difference is the real commercial difference between the firms.

What to demand on the quote itself

  • A line per output with a quantity, so a cut can be a conversation about scope rather than about price.
  • The entity issuing the invoice and the currency. Mainland and free zone suppliers invoice differently and your finance team has a view.
  • The tax treatment stated on the quote, whatever it is in your case. What applies to your company is a question for your own accountant, and it is much cheaper to ask before signing than after the first invoice.
  • Any pass through costs, named, with whose account they sit in.
  • The notice period, and what happens to work in progress when notice is served.

Why we will not print a dirham band for you

We publish our own prices with the date we read them and we do not reproduce anybody else's, including rate bands for UAE agencies. The reason is not delicacy. An undated price band in a market this fragmented is a number a reader will treat as a benchmark and then use to argue with a supplier who never agreed to it. Three quotes against one written scope is better information than any published band, it takes a week, and it is specific to your work.

What we will tell you is where the money goes, because that is stable. In a UAE retainer the largest single cost is senior time, the second is production, and the third is whatever paid media management is bundled in. A quote that is cheap relative to the others is usually cheap on the first of those three, and you can test it by asking who specifically does the work and where they sit.

The measurement line, with a real figure attached

One part of a retainer we can price exactly, because it is ours. Read from aiknowsus.com on 22 October 2026, a UAE buyer takes the column that applies outside the United States and the United Kingdom, where the plan that reads all five AI engines is 199 dollars a month and the entry tier is 99 dollars a month. The entry tier reads zero engines, so it is a search and demand product rather than an AI visibility one, and we would rather say that plainly than let the name do the work. Growth is the cheapest plan on that page that reads ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews.

Put a measurement line in the retainer whatever else it contains. Without it, month six is an argument, and with it month six is a comparison.

Five things a retainer should produce in month one

  1. A written scope with the seven items above settled.
  2. Access, in both directions, with named owners for each account.
  3. A baseline reading of where you stand, taken before any change ships.
  4. The first outputs, however few, so you can see the quality rather than the plan.
  5. A report that names the single number the engagement is judged on.

A month one that produces a strategy deck and nothing on the site is a month you paid for discovery. It happens, and it should be a project with a price rather than the first slice of a retainer.

What the engines tell a UAE buyer about retainer prices

On 22 October 2026 we put 198 UAE buying questions to ChatGPT and Gemini with the market fixed inside the prompt, and took 60 blind readings. The batch that asked about marketing costs in dirhams named software vendors in both engines and named no UAE agency at all. Across the whole set, 34 of 60 readings named nobody.

So an assistant asked what a UAE retainer costs will give you a structure stated confidently, assembled largely from material written for other markets. Use it to build your scope list, not your budget. The number has to come from quotes against your own brief.

What UAE buyers ask when reading an agency retainer quote

Why is one quote half the price of another? Almost always seniority and output count. Ask both suppliers who does the work and how many outputs are included, and the gap explains itself.

Should the retainer include the ad spend? Keep them on separate lines even if they are on one invoice. A blended number makes it impossible to tell whether the fee or the media is underperforming.

Is a three month minimum reasonable? Yes for work that accumulates, and you should trade it for a short notice period rather than accepting both.

What if we only want the Arabic pages? Then buy a project with a page count and an acceptance test, not a retainer. Finished things should be bought as finished things.

Can we start smaller than the quote? Usually, and the honest way to do it is to cut outputs rather than to ask for the same scope cheaper. A supplier who agrees to the same scope at a lower price has just told you what the first number was.

The one line in a retainer that pays for itself in the review

Keep the measurement independent of the supplier doing the work. The firm being judged should not be the only source of the numbers it is judged on, and that is as true of a good agency as a bad one. AI Knows Us reads the question set across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews and reports which answers cited your pages and which named your business, as two separate results, at the price above read on 22 October 2026 from aiknowsus.com.
