What AI assistants tell an architecture or engineering firm to buy, priced against the vendor pages

Four of the five paid products named in the two answers publish no plan price we could find, and the one price we could check was more than twice what the engine said.

Architecture and engineering firms got the thinnest answers of any vertical we measured on 21 October 2026. ChatGPT returned 12 source citations for the question, against a median above 60 across the rest of the set, and Gemini returned one. Between them the two answers named five paid products. On 22 October 2026 we opened every one. One pricing page returned HTTP 404, three publish no plan figure at all, and the only product with a published price on its page costs more than twice what the engine said it costs.

The question, the surfaces and the dates

"How do architecture and engineering firms get found through AI?" went to the ChatGPT product surface at 22:22 UTC and the Gemini product surface at 22:39 UTC on 21 October 2026, through a data provider, with no firm named in the question. Both engines ran a live search. ChatGPT cited 12 sources, three from developers.google.com, two from help.openai.com, two from developers.openai.com, one from perplexity.ai, one from blog.google, one from aia.org and one from an agency blog. Gemini cited exactly one, airops.com, which is a vendor it then recommended.

A one source answer recommending the vendor whose page it read is worth writing down as a buying condition, not as a criticism. It tells you what kind of evidence the answer rests on.

What the two engines told an A and E firm to do

  • ChatGPT ordered the work and put nothing paid in it. Search Console first, then Google Business Profile for firms chasing local commercial, residential and municipal work, then a check that OAI-SearchBot is allowed, then professional credibility through the AIA and state licensing records, then detailed project case studies naming sector, location, project size, scope and the firm's role. Not one paid product appears in its five steps.
  • Gemini led with schema and then with tools. Schema.org via the Merkle generator or Inlinks for service lines, office locations, licences and project portfolios, validated with Google's Rich Results Test. Then citation tracking with AirOps or SE Ranking. Then digital PR through OpenAsset for portfolio asset metadata and PR Newswire or Business Wire for project wins.
  • ChatGPT named the prompt to test with. It wrote out "best structural engineering firms for healthcare projects in Pennsylvania" and told the firm to record which firms get cited. That is a usable baseline and it costs nothing.
  • Both engines wanted the same underlying asset. Specific, sector named, location named project evidence in readable text. ChatGPT asked for case studies with project size and outcomes. Gemini asked for structured data describing service lines and office locations. These are the same requirement in two formats.

The five paid products, each opened on 22 October 2026

  • Inlinks, which Gemini said starts around 40 dollars a month. We could not verify it. inlinks.com/pricing/ returned HTTP 404 and inlinks.com/plans-and-pricing/ also returned HTTP 404 on 22 October 2026. A 404 records what the server did on that date and is not evidence about the real rate.
  • AirOps, which Gemini said starts at around 199 dollars a month. airops.com/pricing returned 200 and renders 977 words. It publishes three tiers named Solo, Pro and Enterprise. Solo and Pro both carry the button "Start for free" and Enterprise carries "Work with us". There is no monthly dollar figure on the page. The only price in it is an overage line, "additional tasks cost $0.025 per task" for Solo users. So the vendor Gemini cited as its single source, and then recommended with a figure, does not publish that figure.
  • SE Ranking, which Gemini said starts at 55 dollars a month. seranking.com/prices.html and seranking.com/prices/ both returned HTTP 404. seranking.com/pricing/ redirected to seranking.com/subscription.html, which returned 200 and publishes Core at 129 dollars a month billed monthly or 103.20 billed annually, with 10 projects, 2,000 keywords and 100 prompts tracked daily, and Growth at 279 monthly or 223.20 annually. The cheapest published plan is more than double the engine's figure. We read that page from an Indian IP address, and pricing pages do sometimes vary by region, so check your own currency column.
  • OpenAsset, recommended for AEC portfolio and image metadata. openasset.com/pricing returned 200 and renders 710 words with no dollar figure in them.
  • PR Newswire and Business Wire, named for distributing project wins. Gemini gave no figure for either and we are not inventing one. Press release distribution is quoted per release and per circuit, so ask for the wire sheet.

There is one free resource in the set worth naming because it checked out. ChatGPT cited aia.org and the AIA AI Firm Toolkit at aia.org/resource-center/ai-firm-toolkit, which returned 200 on 22 October 2026. For a firm deciding where its credibility signals live, a professional body's own page is the kind of source both answers were built from.

The cheapest published route for a 30 person A and E practice

  • Zero. Search Console, the Rich Results Test, the Merkle schema generator and a Google Business Profile for each real office. ChatGPT put all of this ahead of any purchase and it is the whole of month one.
  • Zero, and this is the real work. One page per project that names the sector, the state, the square footage, the delivery method, the consultants, the licences held and your firm's actual scope. Both engines asked for this in different words. An answer about structural engineers for healthcare projects in Pennsylvania can only be assembled from pages that say healthcare, Pennsylvania and structural in text.
  • Zero. Run the test prompt ChatGPT handed over, monthly, with the same wording, and record which firms are named and which URLs are cited.
  • 129 dollars a month. SE Ranking Core, 100 prompts tracked daily, read on its subscription page on 22 October 2026. This is the cheapest figure either engine pointed at that we could actually confirm on a vendor page.
  • Unquoted. AirOps, Inlinks, OpenAsset and both wire services. Four of the five paid products in these answers are bought by asking, which means the engine's figure for them came from somewhere other than the vendor.

Why A and E firms got a 12 citation answer and a one citation answer

Every other vertical we measured that night drew a long citation list, and several drew more than 70. The two thin answers here are a signal about the category rather than about the engines. There is very little published, specific material about how AI answers assemble a recommendation for a design or engineering practice, so the engines had little to read. A firm that publishes the first genuinely specific account of how it won a sector and a state is publishing into an empty room, and that is a rare position in 2026.

The practical form of that is unglamorous. An architecture firm's best asset for this purpose is not a brand statement, it is a project page that says the hospital was 240,000 square feet, in Pennsylvania, delivered design build, and that your team held the structural scope. The prose a stranger can check is the prose an answer can quote.

Where AI Knows Us sits, and where somebody else is the better buy

We sell the measurement, not the marketing. We do not design websites, write case studies, run PR or manage portfolio asset libraries, and an A and E firm should not read this page as a pitch for any of that. What we do is ask the buying question with your firm's name absent from it, on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, and report which firms were named and which URLs the answer was built from. Our ladder, read from aiknowsus.com/llms.txt on 22 October 2026, runs SEO Start at 149 dollars a month in the US and UK or 99 elsewhere, watching 0 questions on 0 engines, then Growth at 299 in the US and UK or 199 elsewhere for 100 questions on all five surfaces weekly, then Scale at 599 and 399 for 300 questions. Growth is the cheapest plan of ours that reads all five, so 149 is not an AI visibility starting price.

Where a rival is better value, named and with the figure we read. SE Ranking Core at 129 dollars a month billed monthly carries 100 prompts tracked daily against our Growth at 299 for 100 questions watched weekly. On price and on cadence that is the better line for a firm whose SEO suite and prompt tracking can sit in one subscription, and we did not verify which engines sit behind its prompt count, so read that row yourself. Ahrefs Brand Radar starts at 50 dollars a month for custom prompts, and ahrefs.com/brand-radar states it is free on any paid Ahrefs Lite plan or above, which a firm already paying 129 dollars a month for Ahrefs Lite should check before buying anything new. Profound publishes single sign on, SAML, SOC 2 compliance and up to nine answer engines on its enterprise tier and publishes no dollar price anywhere on tryprofound.com/pricing, which we read on 22 October 2026 and found to contain 1,302 words and not one dollar figure. Our own pricing page, 119,203 bytes read the same day, returns zero word boundary matches for sso, saml, soc 2, iso, dpa and white label, so a firm with a procurement questionnaire should expect to fail us on those lines. The page also disagrees with itself, rendering "Businesses covered 1 1 1 1 1 1 10 1" above "More than one business No" in every column. Both readings are live and we are not choosing between them.

What this reading fixes and what it does not. One question per engine on one night and one fetch per URL on 22 October 2026. Every figure here belongs to the page it was read on. Treat a written quote as the only price that binds anybody.

What architects and engineers ask about being found through AI

Does a design firm need an AI visibility tool at all

Neither answer said yes as a first step. ChatGPT named no paid product in its five step plan. Gemini named tools second, after schema. The free version of the job, running your own buying prompts monthly and recording the firms and URLs named, answers the only question a 30 person practice has in month one.

What should go on a project page for this to work

Sector, state or metro, size in square feet, delivery method, your firm's actual scope, the consultants you worked with, the licences and registrations held, and the outcome in a number a client would recognise. In text, on the page, not in a downloadable PDF and not only in a portfolio viewer.

Is schema markup worth the developer time

Gemini put it first and ChatGPT did not mention it, which is the honest answer. The job schema does is describe service lines, offices and licences in a machine readable way, and that is cheap to add with the free Merkle generator and the free Rich Results Test. It is not a substitute for the project pages both engines really wanted.

Why did the engine quote a price the vendor does not publish

Because the figure came from a third party article rather than the vendor. AirOps was Gemini's only cited source and its own pricing page carries no monthly figure, so the 199 dollars in the answer did not come from there. That is the reason to open the page yourself before you budget.

How often should a firm re run this

Quarterly suits a practice with a long sales cycle, monthly if you are chasing a specific sector in a specific state. Keep the wording identical, keep the list of firms named, and keep the cited URLs, because the URLs tell you which pages the engines are actually reading in your market.
