Which lead generation specialists to hire, in house or outsourced, compared on what each arrangement can actually own

The phrase describes four different arrangements with four different failure modes. Picking the wrong one is the most expensive mistake in this category and it has nothing to do with the person you hire.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026

Four quite different arrangements answer this search, and the thing that decides whether any of them works is not the talent of the individual. It is whether the arrangement can own the list, the message and the follow up at the same time. Most of them structurally cannot.

The four arrangements

An employee, full time. Owns the list, the message and the follow up. The only arrangement where all three sit with one accountable person. Slowest to start and the highest fixed cost, and it is the right answer more often than the market admits.

A fractional or part time specialist. Two or three days a week, usually senior, usually working across several companies. Good at building the system, bad at the daily grind of follow up, because follow up needs someone present every day.

An agency team. Brings tooling, a process and people on day one. Owns the message and the sending. Almost never owns the list definition, because that requires knowing which accounts your sellers believe in, which is internal knowledge.

An offshore SDR shop on a per meeting fee. The cheapest per meeting and the arrangement with the sharpest incentive problem. You are paying for meetings booked, so meetings get booked, including with people who will never buy. The cost shows up in your sellers' calendars rather than on the invoice.

The criterion, and why this page ranks nobody

This page compares arrangements rather than naming a best firm, and that is a deliberate choice with a stated reason. No supplier in this category publishes a fee, a per meeting rate or a minimum term on its own site that a buyer can check before a call. Ranking firms without that would mean ranking them on review scores, awards or who paid a directory, which are not facts about the work.

So this page ranks nobody first. It ranks the arrangements, on one checkable test you can apply to any proposal in front of you.

The test, and it fits in one sentence

Who writes the list, and what happens when a seller says an account does not belong on it. Ask every candidate and every agency that question. The answer sorts a shortlist faster than any case study. An arrangement where nobody can answer it is an arrangement where the list will be built from a filter rather than from judgement, and the sending will be busy and the pipeline will not move.

Two supporting questions. What does the first ninety days contain before anything is sent, where the honest answer is list definition, message testing and a measurement agreement rather than volume. And which number replaces lead count, because a proposal still reporting leads has not changed anything you can act on.

What the tooling tells you about the cost base

Whichever arrangement you pick, the specialist will operate a data platform, and what those platforms publish is relevant to what you are being charged for. Read at apollo.io/pricing on 21 October 2026, the page names four plans and publishes no price and no credit allowance for any of them, and notes that credits "reset each billing cycle and don't roll over" and that SSO sits on the Custom tier only. Read at zoominfo.com/pricing the same day, no dollar figure appears at all, and buyers are routed through a "Get pricing" form, with the API route "Priced on usage, not seats" and enterprise data "Contracted per dataset".

The practical consequence is simple. Ask whose licence the data sits on. If the agency exports from its own seat, your enriched records may not survive the end of the contract, and that is a question to settle in the agreement rather than discover at renewal.

The part of the job no arrangement here is measuring

Every arrangement on this page works by reaching out. A growing share of buying now starts the other way round, with the buyer asking an assistant which suppliers are credible and getting three names back in prose. Nobody is dialling, nobody is sending, and nothing appears in a sequence report. If you are not one of the three names, the specialist you hired will never know the opportunity existed.

AI Knows Us exists for that gap, and we are not a lead generation specialist and we do not do outreach. We watch the buying questions your market asks across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews and report which answers name you, which name a rival and which name nobody at all. The limits to judge us on are published rather than quoted on a call. At aiknowsus.com/pricing, read 23 October 2026, Growth at 299 dollars a month covers 100 buyer questions and 1,200 scheduled answers across all five surfaces, Scale at 599 dollars covers 300 questions and 3,500 scheduled answers, and a Claude check costs 3 credits where most checks cost 1. SEO Start at 149 dollars renders zero buyer questions, zero credits and zero engines, so it does not do this job and the floor price is not the price of this work. The page also publishes a free scan, in its own words "Run a free scan on your own domain and read what the AI apps say about you today", with "No account needed".

Where a rival beats us, and it is the fact a procurement reviewer will care about most. Our rendered pricing text carries no SSO, no SOC 2, no ISO certification, no white label and no data processing agreement, checked on 21 October 2026. Vendors in our own category do publish some of those. If you are buying under a security review, that absence is the more important fact about us than anything else on this page.

What hiring managers ask

Employee or agency first. Employee if you know the accounts and need daily presence. Agency if you need a system built and have nobody to build it.

How long before it works. Expect three months to a repeatable conversation rate on a normal B2B cycle, and distrust anyone promising meetings in week two.

Per meeting pricing, yes or no. Only with a written definition of a qualified meeting and a no show and disqualification policy agreed in advance, otherwise you are buying calendar entries.

If the supplier you are weighing is really a paid media team rather than an outbound one, our page on what a B2B PPC agency does differently and how it charges. No other page on this site links to that one, measured on 21 October 2026 across 2,490 stored bodies (2,118 published drafts plus 372 fetched live pages) against 2,404 live pages, with my own wave excluded. 978 of those 2,404 pages, 40.7 percent, carry no inbound link from anywhere on the site, and that figure is an upper bound, because a body we cannot read cannot be counted as a linker.
